Seems like a long week doesn't it ?? with the outbreak of the Pandemic. I think most of the world is on lockdown now. The photos I saw online of the pope walking alone, no crowds, to pray will be on my mind for awhile
I did some reading about the 1918 pandemic which is where so many people in their 20-40's were targeted with that virus. My Great Grandma perished at a young age and her daughter my Grandmother was only 15 or 16 when she lost her Mom. The biggest mistake during that event was not taking self quarantine seriously and many continued to attend large events, parades etc. So this is serious, and to protect people (especially my age now) the seniors this is so important-as the young are mostly carriers in this pandemic.
We are all social but in today's world we have social media, telephones, skype etc-so we can still be social just not be in person or touching.
My prayers and thankfulness go out to all those people on the frontlines, now is the time to work together and in this country (USA) as Americans and Not as a Democrat or Republican.
Now that we have wifi-we never had that before- it is amazing how I can get live information online streaming-we are really loving that-first hand-not twisted by the news media-I have realized this past week just how much they are doing this after seeing the news live as it was happening.
Time to turn off the news again-to me they have added to the panic.
Enough of all that-I know this is affecting everyone around the world in some way. Be safe and take care of yourselves.
Last week I did watch a few you tube videos on painting with acrylics. I ran into Will Kemp art school that I really love. I also watched a couple Monet painting style videos-and I enjoyed the painting I did. This was a good video and it had a little history on the brushes of that time I found very interesting.
Also got reminded of Bob Ross-I never painted before but I always watched his shows on pbs back then-he was so informative and amazing to watch paint. A very calming voice too. So I have been watching some of his shows that are now being shared online-I need to watch those again where he tells how to make things look like they are in the distance and make a landscape not a flat painting-I don't have that part figured out yet.
This is my Monet inspired (all photos will enlarge just click on them)
Before I glued down in my journal
Decided I needed something in front of the cabin
I do like the sky in this one, loved the technique of this one-need to learn more about moving water
Another day I decided to do another one similiar-not real happy with this one-but will add to my journal as reference to my progress
This was yesterday-a bit too flat still, don't like the water-my attempt was rain-snow mix and I am not crazy about this sky although I did get better contrast between sky and water-then I had on my very first pieces.
This morning I added to it and I like it better
I have this vintage metal chest with large not high drawers-perfect for my stamps-and it is in a corner away from light so usually takes better photos
The dark spots in the water of both paintings are to be shadows from the trees-don't know if that really comes across?
The whole point was to have fun and to learn along the way. I would like to be able to paint a sunrise over our lake that is good enough one day to hang.
Those of you that are painters-any tips for improving and learning are always welcome.
I was looking at the gouache paints and a blogger artist friend here was helping me with those-but after reading more about them I decided to go with acrylics instead. I liked the chalky look of those-but learned they are never permanent-a drop of water will activate the paint. I am having enough challenges haha
I am out of white paint now, and I don't like the blues that were in this little kit I bought. So I took the splurge and ordered a set of Liquitex acrylic tubes. Still small tubes but will give me more choices of colors and for mixing paints-and I did order a painters color wheel-that shows mixing tips. (thanks Elizabeth as I would not have thought of needing that) I contacted Liquitex online and they answered the next day-these paints are now manufactured in France-no longer in China so I went with them and I like the Liquitex products I have used so far.
I am always trying to buy not China products-always have-even more so now.
Saturday the classes for Fiber U were up to view and sign up for. This event is held in July so thinking by first of June the self quarantine should be lifted if we can get a handle on the virus curve.
Looking through the classes I decided not to take any of them. My favorite dyeing teacher is teaching a beginner class for natural dyeing-I am pretty much self taught so I don't think I need that one. and the spinning classes are too advanced for me, nothing else appealed to me-so the money I saved not taking classes will pay for the paints.
I made us chocolate chip cookies over the weekend-gluten free batch for me and wheat batch for Larry both using keto sugars I filled up a cookie jar for me and one for Hubs and froze the rest. Keeps us from eating too many 😀
Someone here last year I think shared this tea-It brews up so lovely I had to get some. I needed to order my decaf coffee so bought this too
There were no instructions on brewing so I searched online. Just need one or two flowers steep and enjoy. It tastes just like green tea. I didn't try it but it said if you add lemon that will change the color
This would be beautiful over ice-enjoyed on the deck watching the boats this summer (smile)
I had planned to make a St Patrick's day journal page to share, and I found the pieces in my stash to design it-but I just haven't been inspired to do that.
I will make us up our favorite dinner-corn beef and cabbage, and may even get out my sourdough rye starter for bread for Larry-not sure yet. March 17th would have been our friend Lilburn's birthday and he loved this meal-he will be missed at the table tomorrow.
Happy T Day and St Patrick's Day to everyone
Found this card online
Update: after I posted this the mail lady came down with a happy mail package. I recently met a new blog friend Debra through Barbara who is a painter. She sent me some wonderful gifts.
I was admiring one of her paintings-we have always lived very rural and could really identify with this lovely painting. It also matches in nicely with our walls
I will look out for a frame for this one
and I couldn't figure out why the box was so heavy-she sent along a big fat book and a couple little frames-thank you soooo much Debra. Of all my books I do not own one on painting
The world is rather crazy just now, and I hope we all get through this crisis well. Love your paintings, have fun learning and practising. Your cookies look good, great idea to freeze some. Happy T day, take care of yourself. Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteThank you Valerie-you as well Hugs
DeleteGreat observations, Kathy. It's really encouraging to read the voice of wisdom these days. I agree that the press is doing more harm than good. It's all about the paycheck and the notoriety to them. So the more sensational, the better. The truth be damned.
ReplyDeleteI really feel your strength and independence in this post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree this online community will be a wonderful refuge for many in these times.
Nice impressionist work. I'm guessing the painting is your impressionist view of the lake house.
I'm not a very good painter, but I think you're taking an excellent path. Watch lots of videos - free or paid. I've come a long way in art through online videos. It's a fun way to learn.
Debra's winter scene is terrific. How big is it? Have fun with those great art gifts she sent!
Happy T-day! Eileen xx
Debra's painting is 8"x10" I will look for a frame or I have a good place to go for framing that is not overly expensive-back in the city near the woods house.
DeleteMy paintings were trying to paint water with shadows and the sky mostly-yes more videos needed
I love the blue of your lake page Kathy. And you are right about the internet really being helpful with things right now. It is nice to have an online social life when the rest of social lives is coming to a complete stop. I've read quite a bit on the 1918 flu pandemic, and it is fascinating in history but certainly living it is much scarier and more stressful than reading. But good lessons can be learned for sure.Take care of yourself Kathy, and stay healthy. Have a happy St Patrick's Day and also T day. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeletethank you Erika, you take care of you and your family too-hugs
Deletewow- you always have so much packed into your daily life! I love Liquitex acrylic paints. Just keep playing and practicing- it really does get easier:) Nice cabin scene painting. I always have baking ingredients in stock so I guess I'll be using it all much faster than before this crazy pandemic. Happy T day!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great time to bake and cook up comfort foods for sure. I decided to get out the rye sourdough tonight to proof.
DeleteThanks I will keep practicing-hugs
So far here life goes on a bit like usual.
ReplyDeleteSchools get closed. How are parents supposed to manage that?
I am waiting since 20 minutes for a workman. Hmmm. Late, sick, banned?
Just a couple of weeks ago I gave away a Bob Ross book! I kinda regret that now rather big!
And then I bought (cheap) painting stuff, where is my mind going???
Yes. The point is to have fun!
Fun :-) Do you know the The Simpsons episode with Larry? I always smile reading the name :-) Sooo cute.
And you even top that with the next pic!!!! There is also... you know. You have me laughing here! :-)
Pea flowers??? The color sure fits!
St Patrick's Day is "unknown" here, but have fun - and a happy T-day!
Hello Iris, the country is getting close to a lock down-we don't go out much anyways-but would be nice to be able to buy things we need-the stores can't keep stocked-and out of everything online too
Deleteoh a Bob Ross book that would be cool to have. yes so far I am having fun with the paints
I admire your paintings, I have no talent for it although I have all the stuff and have tried but I've decided to admit I cant draw or paint,
ReplyDeleteYou painting are lovely. The tea sounds interesting! I'm sure it will look pretty good in summer on ice, not my cup of tea but they are very popular.
We have lots of Chinese Bazaar shops here and we haven't been going in since we returned from the UK as they have a big turnover of staff, new faces all the time, best to avoid at this time just in case. I also nearly ordered some dies from Amazon but saw they were from China so didn't bother, last time I ordered something it took three months to arrive.
yes some things ordered from china does take a long time I am just not buying china anymore I will do without if possible. I was curious about this tea so had to try it-if you like green tea tastes just like that to me
DeleteI'm sorry to hear the completion of the sale of the house has been held up. Everything is on hold.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have tv and at a time like this I am really thankful.
Good for you that you are practicing your painting and are happy to keep the one you are not really happy with. It is a learning curve. (I am not a painter myself, mind)
I am glad you can keep yourself busy. Thank goodness for art and crafts!
Happy T-Day my friend,
and stay safe,
Hugs,
Lisca
Yes so thankful for arts and crafts-I always have something I can work on-you stay safe too hugs
DeleteHi! thanks for the video links ~ I love watching free learning videos. Keep painting and baking and trying new techniques! Blessings to you ~
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome-searching there are really loads of you tube videos for just about anything we want to learn about. I am looking forward to my next painting
DeleteSuch a great post with lots of techniques to try, thanks for sharing 😀. Your pages look amazing and I love the foreground that you added infront of the cabin; it finishes the painting beautifully and draws the eye into the rest of the scene - amazing! Those cookies look yummy and I hope you enjoy your St. Partick's Day meal too 😉. Take care and sending happy T Day wishes! Hugs, Jo x
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Jo-yes that really did add allot to the painting-I got that tip from Barabara. Happy T and Stpat's day to you as well
DeleteI love Liquitex paints. The colors are rich. You were right to buy artist grade paints. Before you paint on the wood blocks, cover the surface with gesso. You probably already know that. Your paintings are good! You are learning so much. I can't wait to see what you'll do next!
ReplyDeleteHi Debra-thank you-no I did not know that-to paint the blocks with gesso first so thanks for letting me know and I do have some liquitex gesso too. thanks much for the inspiration-hugs
DeleteHi Kathy I have enjoyed my visit to your blog and your gorgeous paintings, I was drawn into the scenes you created and look forward to seeing more of your pages. The c ookies look delicious and a really good idea to keep some in the freezer, I would have no will power to keep them in the box and they wouldn't last long here. I hope you have a lovely St Patricks day and a happy, safe rest of the week. It is good that we have computers to keep in touch with folk when we are advised to stay indoors.
ReplyDeleteYvonne xx
Thank you so much Yvonne, I am enjoying this new creative endeavour will see how it goes-hugs
DeleteThese are strange days we're living in right now. Thank you for leaving positive comments on my blog. As I'm sure you can tell, my panic and stress level has gone through the roof. I agree with you about wishing everyone would stop the Democrat / Republican crap and work as ONE! NY Gov Cuomo made a good speech about that during a press conference a few days ago. He called out both political sides and said everyone needs to stop the crap and work as ONE. I like your paintings and that was so nice of that woman to send you a painting and art book in the mail. Stay healthy and safe.
ReplyDeleteI think that was awesome what NY's Governor did-more should do the same-this is basicly a time for war-war against this dangerous virus.
DeleteI thought it was amazing that Debra sent me a painting-and the huge painting book-so sweet of her--you all stay safe too hugs
Well You Crafty Little Angel You - Very Impressive - Be Well
ReplyDeleteCheers
Thank you-having fun
DeleteMy mother was born during the 1918 flu pandemic, but no one in her family died. I love the internet and being so easily able to keep up with the news. I watch Trump's briefings live. I'm staying in except for grocery shopping and am resisting the mighty call of the gardening centers ;) I figure the least I can do is what the authorities ask of me.
ReplyDeleteI especially love how you do trees :) I missed T Day completely lol, but maybe we can share a cuppa a day late :)
Hi I am so glad you dropped by was concerned politics got in the way between us but didn't think so.
DeleteI am getting information live only now-I can always research out something from it as well. we are totally staying indoors as well-I need to go food shopping over the weekend-will go early. at least being house bound-is not so bad at the lake-smile-if it ever warms up Larry can go fishing off the dock too.
Yes a share cuppa is perfect-I made a french press full of white teas and one bud of the pea flower
If we can't talk despite political differences we'll be in a sorry state :) And besides, I love that kinda talk ;) It's so rainy here I'm enjoying the patio from inside.
DeleteOooo, French press, yes. I've been using my single cup pour over, but I think the French press is the thing for now :)
that makes me happy-I really didn't think there was any problem but you and one other person hadn't stopped so thought oh no haha. I haven't used my french press in awhile its really nice for few cups worked well with the tea too we are to be getting storms here -pretty bad tomorrow I guess-we'll see
DeleteAfter running a new line and new connectors, I was finally back online. Just when I thought things were stable, I was once again offline for over nine hours. At least this time, I was able to get back on. Sorry I’m such a bad T Tuesday host this week.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got a color wheel. I know I should buy one, but color is the ONLY thing I'm any good at. I'm cr*p at composition, although I know all the rules. I'm no good at perspective, either, but color has always been something I just intuitively knew and understood. I think you are doing a great job. I can't draw, sketch, or paint a scene. It's just not in my wheelhouse. I think you'll go far once you start understanding the paints. I have a few of those acrylics, but mine are called "Basics" by Liquitex. I never use them because I'm so used to either my fluid acrylics OR my cheap craft paint. I only used them when I used my gelli plate.
WOW, I've never heard of that tea, but it has a pretty color. Thanks for sharing your art and your tea with us, as well as your cookies, for T this week, dear friend.
GLAD to read you are staying in. I needed groceries today, so since I couldn't get on the internet, bought groceries. No potatoes to be found, and limits on soup and other goodies. Aldi had NO veggies in cans and very few fresh veggies. I'll have to make do, since I'm not going to another store and risk even MORE fear of catching this virus.
