A New Journal Page-Painting

Hi everyone, we are actually a bit warmer today, still no sunshine here and lots of rain and t storms coming in for a few days. I think the humidity in the air is why it feels warmer-Hubs just went to the dock with fishing pole and worms in hand-I told him he go anywhere on this property but no place else-haha. He is 74 with major health issues so I am firm on that point.

The last few days I worked on another painting. I am still having fun although the results are not what I am envisioning for sure. 😀

I decided to add texture to the mountains by adding in used dried tea leaves into the paint. It helped it some. I think tomorrow my box of Liquitex paints will be here-so I am excited about better color choices. I know one doesn't need allot of colors as they can mix them-but this set I have now is not doing that-just making things lighter or darker.

I am not sure if I will add this one to AJJ's  theme for green by Eileen-my painting skills are really not all that good yet.
I figure if I share these painting attempts then I leave this open to suggestions from you better artists for tips on improving

Ok Erika suggested it was ok to link up with AJJ   thank you

all photos will enlarge just click on them

I am still disappointed in the water movement

A couple weeks ago my blogging artist friend Barbara sent me a spiral cookbook that she thought I could use for my journals--I am thinking of changing over my paintings to this book-the pages are bigger-and I think with the different size of paper I may be able to do better with distance etc.

I think this direction looks like a nice size to paint on. these are glossy papers. I will again glue two pages together and then either gesso it well or glue down acrylic artist paper like above painting

I have had enough coffee for awhile so I grabbed my french press and added in two kinds of white teas and two pea flowers to brew up a tea-very nice  I took this photo just a few minutes after pouring in the hot water. when steeped for 5 minutes it was a very dark green color-due to to the purple pea flowers.

Happy Friday and weekend everyone-stay safe and healthy-please

  1. Kathy i think you will enjoy the Liquitex immensley! They will blend so much easier for sure... Some suggestions on painting... think about a light source... what direction is the light coming from... then paint your lightest highlights and darkest shadows accordingly.. have a reference photo or even a still life in front of you instead of painting from memory... I LOVE seeing you painting Kathy... finding your way just like me! Most of all... Have Fun!!! Hugs! deb

    1. Thank you so much Deb-Bob Ross mentioned the light too in one of his videos-thank you-I will explore that. I don't understand light-so that's a good suggestion-looking at something for reference-hugs

  2. Kathy,I think you are in the beginning stages of developing your own painting style. Your work reminds me of Grandma Moses’ work. Keep doing what makes you happy, that’s all that matters. I’m glad you have a plan for the book I sent, it will allow bigger finished works, great. Your tea looks too pretty to drink!

  3. You should link up to AJJ and Eileen's challenge. Everything take practice before you (well people in general) start to really like what you do. But for those of us looking, we like it as it is. I especially like the texture in the mountains. It makes them look a little bit rocky. I am going to thank you in advance for joining AJJ, because i do think you should Hugs-Erika

  7. !I find your page very nicely painted and in time you will have it out as you paint the river. The joy is in the foreground when painting that is the most important thing, since I recognized this everything worked much better!
    Simply paint out freely!
    Greetings Elke

  8. Art is in the eye of the beholder! I think you should be well pleased with the work you are producing but it is good to see that you are open to suggestions for improvement - I think I need instructions from the very beginning. Remember that a child has to crawl before it can walk and so with continued practise you will find new ways to work and develop your own style.
Perhaps if you look at the work of some of the great artists you will see that they all have different ways of working and maybe you will put them into different levels. Lowry did stick men but look at how famous he became. Vastly different work to, say, Renoir or Constable who are different again.
What I say is "enjoy your art" and to me that is the best thing you can do.
    Hugs, Neet xx

    1. Thank you Neet, yes I need to be patient with myself as this is a totally new art medium for me-I always have worked with natural dyes and fibers, weaving etc. I love Monet and also Grandma Moses so different-I will watch more videos on the Monet techniques thanks for the encouragement

  9. Kathy, I cannot understand why you don't like your painting. I think it is gorgeous! It is your style, sweetie, and you must be proud. Keep painting and I am sure that your painting will improve more.
The cooking book will be perfect for painting using gesso.
    Hugs, my dear friend.

  10. Again, I'm impressed with your trees especially :) You get great colors both there and in your moving stream. I like it!

  11. Your trees are super! Don't be too critical... journaling is to try out things and to have fun. I have often pages that are not after my taste -- but with every page you learn so much!
Would love to taste this tea...looks fabulous green!

    Big hugs Kathy!

  14. I love watching your journey begin in painting! You have an honest, forthright soul I think, not afraid of anything! You will see all the things you feel are hard to capture become easy for you with time and practice. Working at it is a huge percentage of 'getting' it. Now if I could just follow my own advice!!!

  15. I think your latest painting is great. I love the trees. I also like the looks of that tea in a French press. I would LOVE to get some white tea, because I've never had any, at least none that I know of. Sorry I'm still playing catch up.
