New Journal Page for AJJ & TIOT

Hi everyone and Happy Saturday,
It is really beautiful outdoors again but still on the cool side with the winds. Lots of boats buzzing by today. Tomorrow we are to get close to 68 degrees F.

I have had an idea for my next journal page, this one just developed further as I worked on it.
I wanted to use a new stamp I had picked up at a resale shop that helps cats that Larry found for me. I also wanted to try a new to me technique-working with acrylic paints. I also used, gel pens, crayons, Staz on ink pad, and another piece of cardboard for a stamp. I worked on a piece of mixed media paper and then glued into my spiral journal.

Note: all photos will enlarge just click on them

I did have fun with this page-which is my intent for these journal pages. I started out with painting grass-I have no clue on painting-this is all just for fun

This is a photo before glued into my journal, and before the vintage trunk paper with Spring Wash was glued down

After I painted on the grass (green), I used yellow paint to add the sun and then added in dandelions to the grass.
I used my Mickey Mouse stamp and printed with black ink, then I colored in with gel pens. I usually do not color in the stampings because I am concerned I will mess it up-but this turned out perfect-I love it. I painted the chair green.
I then stamped up that piece of cardboard inked with the black ink to simulate a fence. I used gel pens to add in some flowers (morning glories)
I do not like white-in quilt making or anything, so I decided to grab a crayon and rub over the background-forgetting that the cardboard underneath to protect my desk top had texture in it-worked out perfectly though-I turned the page around to get a bit of cross hatching.
We have several vintage trunks, and one of them the paper was coming off in the inside. I saved scraps of it-and decided to use a piece here. I used a green gel pen for writing Spring Wash.

(the cardboard that gave me the textured rubbing with crayon

I didn't want to paint rays of sun-so I tried to get texture in the sun instead

I am linking up with Eileen's theme Green at AJJ  and TIOT for new technique which was using acrylic paints for the first time.

  2. Holy moly, you are a natural, girl! Ok, here we go...critique time. Never fear, critiques are good! This may all be just for fun, but you aced the grass, dandelions, and morning glories (my favorite flower to grow) with that paint. The only thing I don’t easily see is a fence from the cardboard stamp, but it works as a morning glory holding structure anyhow! Using the vintage trunk paper was genius, and yet another example of your imagination. I’m figuring you look at everything as fodder for artistic use. The sun is perfect, so glad you didn’t waste the yellow paint now that I see you have paint tubes. What can one say about using crayon on the background except it was meant to be! The cross-hatch looks wonderful, and your idea to turn the page around to get that is again, your imagination at work. Mickey lends his own kind of whimsy to the scene, well done all around!

    1. Thank you for kind words Debra, I appreciate this very much. I am a fiber artist at heart, but since I turned 70 last October I am exploring new things this year-I can't draw anything but I always thought I would give painting a go someday.

    2. Debra said what I felt about the grass being your first try with acrylics. As you know, I was a fiber artist as well, that is until arthritis made continuing unmanageable. So back to painting it was, and I’m so excited about it! I can’t draw either, I’ve lost the hand ability, but I can hold painting tools. You truly are very good at this!

  5. I was first drawn by the background. when I learned you created your own cross hatching by turning the page around, I was nearly blown away, I was also impressed that this was the first time you used acrylics. Those are some expensive acrylics, too, Kathy. This is a great page and I love the dandelions in the grass. Thanks for sharing it with us at Art Journal Journey using Eileen's theme, too.

  11. Fabulous page, Kathy! I love the texture on the sun. Your instincts were very good on that. The green grass came out great and your coloring of Mickey is perfect.

I guess you've been bitten by the art journaling bug like I was two years ago. Thank you for sharing yet another page with us at AJJ for my green challenge.

  16. Hi Kathy-I loved it that you liked my winter painting. I want to give it to you. Please write a comment on my blog with your address. I will not publish the comment. I have an abundance of paintings and I would love to give you that one!
Also-just my two cents here-you say you can't draw-but that's how we all start out. It's just practice-just like when we learned how to write or print. You can do it-and you can paint. I'm glad you are going to paint!
