The sky was gorgeous this morning so grabbed my camera
Also I have a question, I was helped to understand what gesso is and what to use to seal my work (from our Elizabeth) but now looking at gesso on Amazon and elsewhere-wow there are sooo many different ones. Which brands do you like best and why? thanks in advance.
My goals for the new year is to step out of my comfort zone with my art and crafts and learn new things.
My husband and I have always been isolated from people-we always worked all the time, have no family really, and we prefer to live rural (no sub divisions or city life for us), however as we are now getting much older we feel the effects of all that
Expanding my art experiences is what I want to achieve this coming new year.
Thank goodness for the internet and all my friends here and for the you tube videos etc to learn new things. That for me is a blessing of what is on the internet.
Happy Sunday everyone
What a peaceful sunrise :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a home-body, and even here in the city I tend not to connect with folks face-to-face somehow. The internet and various social media have been such a blessing to me.
I'll follow comments here to see gesso recommendations :)
It’s always exciting to learn new things. So much information on the Internet and bloggin and other social media outlets lessen the sense of isolation
ReplyDeleteI didn't look on Amazon, BUT my suggestion is to get STUDENT grade gesso. It will be very thin when you get it. Isolate a small amount in a glass jar and leave the lid ajar for a few days. It will thicken enough that you will think you have purchased the most expensive brand. I also suggest you buy the largest amount you can afford because it will last longer, especially if you isolate part of it to make it thicker as you need it.
ReplyDeleteIF you need to THIN gesso, use ONLY DISTILLED water. Don't use tap or well or filtered water, because it will eventually mold. Use only distilled water to thin anything from paint to gesso to shimmering mists.
I look forward to seeing what others suggest.
I’ve used gesso to cover bad paintings and re-use a canvas, but I don’t have a favorite. I just got whatever Michaels was selling. Your sunrise video is amazingly lovely! It looks very calm, but I wonder if it stayed that way. There’s the saying “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.” Hope I have it wrong! Lol.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I really liked the video you shared of the sunrise over the lake.
ReplyDeleteAbout the Gesso, I have tried a couple brands depending on what and how you use them they seem to last for years. My current one is Pebeo.[Studio] and I would buy it again. It was a good tip from Elizabeth as well.
Enjoy your new ventures with new crafts, I love experimenting some work many don't but thats part of the fun.

My hubby and i are much the same as you and your husband.. not much friends or family and live rural.. The internet has been a Godsend for me.. for my arts and crafts and friendships.. I'll have to look what brand of gesso i buy.. I used to get Liquitex from Hobby Lobby ... but then started buying a gesso from Walmart... cheaper.. maybe doesn't cover as well but works for what i need.. Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteI like Liquitex (I can get a bottle at Hobby lobby pretty cheap with the weekly 40% coupon you can find online, but it is pricier if you don't have a Hobby Lobby near you. If I want to go cheaper I will pick up Dina Wakely's from Ranger. I like her paints and matte medium a lot. Gesso is pretty thin but I use and old credit card or something of that sort to spread it so a little goes a long way. That way there it dried quickly. Good luck with your search. Finding new techniques and crafts is always such a fun and exciting thing to do, even if you don't like what you did or made. Hugs-Erika
