A Very Sad Day Today

I just wanted to post that we lost our sweet Miss Calico.
She was just outside the front door eating her food when I heard her food dish go flying and when I stepped outdoors saw her being attacked by 3 dogs-I was able to shoo them off but sadly they hurt her so bad the vet needed to put her down.
Such a shock of events for sure. I called the county sheriff as there is no animal control or any city law enforcement here at the lake.  I wanted to report this as these must be wild feral dogs and could kill other animals or small children.
We will be grieving for some time, feel so terrible her life ended in this way. We brought her home and buried her at the lake house.
Friends are asking if we shouldn't have moved-I won't go there-life is fragile and precious no matter where we are in our lives.

The last photo I took of our dear friend

You my internet friends are always so special to me, I just needed to share my sorrow.

  1. How incredibly sad. I feel so sorry for you. I just wish Miss Calico would have been more willing to stay inside, at least part of the time. I know how you feel. I don't look forward to the day I have to bury one of my boys. Thanks for sharing with us and I really am not sure any words of sympathy will be adequate right now. However, just know my heart goes out to you, dear Kathy.

  6. I'm sorry that this happened to your Miss Calico. Very sad. I can't stand seeing packs of dogs running the neighborhood. I hope these dogs will be found before they harm any children or more people's pets.

  8. To lose a pet in a less than peaceful way is heartbreaking. It happens often as they are more susceptible especially when outdoors. It has broken our hearts a number of times. Focus on how long she was with you, the many peaceful years you gave her, and know that you could have done no more. Her constant companionship will stay with you in spirit as you work around your yard.

  9. Oh how horrible, I do hope those dogs are found as they could be a danger to others as you pointed out. Virtual hugs to you. I had a similar experience, with a rescue dog we took in that attacked my other dog. Please don't second guess your move, it was right for you, and this kind of thing could happen anywhere.

  11. My heart aches for you. It's hard to lose our fur babies when they die naturally, but to have her attached is even worse. Sending healing thoughts for the both of you.

  13. How awful! We lost a cat this way once :( Nothing was ever done about the loose dogs in the neighborhood, but I tried never to leave a cat outside unattended after that. It's just that cats sometimes don't cooperate with that :( It's so hard with a cat that's not happy being indoors :(

Your move is not related to this tragedy at all, and I'm sorry that was brought up to you. An outdoor cat faces danger wherever you live, like ours did in a city residential neighborhood. We can't always protect them.

I hope you find peace in your fond memories.

  14. Oh, I'm so heart broken to hear your news, what an awful thing to happen! I don't think you can blame this tragedy on your moving though, there is always danger and risk around. Thinking of you and sending wishes of comfort and peace! Big hugs, Jo x

  15. This whole event makes me sad, and even sadder that there is no control at the lake. I am sure it is not only your friend but other people's friends who have been affected by these dogs. Sorry for your loss Kathy. Hugs-Erika

  17. How tragic, Kathy. My condolences. You must be in shock, especially after learning that the authorities don't care about dangerous animals roaming free.

Your comment about staying where you are made me think of a conversation Chris & I just had. I was worrying about our son living in Oakland CA where there's a plague of rats spreading typhoid and other rat-borne diseases. Medical experts say bubonic plague is on the horizon. I asked, "Why doesn't he move someplace safer?" Then I caught myself and realized. Where we live, there are drug cartels. Gun battles day and night kill more innocent bystanders than drug lords. Our conclusion is to stay where you're happy and live each day to the fullest.

    Big hugs, Eileen
