Our First T Stands for Tuesday for 2023

I really can't believe we are now into a brand new year. Last year went fast for us, but in parts dragged do to the weather preventing me from getting things accomplished outdoors-we'll see what happens this year-I am not going to fret about it though.

I am linking this post for Elizabeth's T Stands for Tuesday where we share a drink related photo-find link in my sidebar-thank you Bleubeard and Elizabeth for hosting.

Did you make it to midnight to celebrate the new year?  I always try to do this, I celebrate alone with the tv as Hubs always says I will see the new year in the morning haha.  I have been enjoying the New Year's tv celebration in Nashville over the last couple of years, as I enjoy the music much more, and they celebrate two time zones for the count down which I like too.  This year I was really tired and fell asleep probably a little after 10 pm and woke up 5 minutes before midnight-how perfect was that??  smiles.

I did miss some of the surrounding fireworks here on the lake though. The professional that lives right across from us on the lake usually does it earlier-so if he did I missed it. I did watch several neighbors near me shoot off a few at midnight. I caught one photo-sorta

After 20 plus years of using my digital camera I never could figure out how to set for night photos etc. A month or so ago Larry played around with my camera and found a setting for all sorts of things and it comes up first for me to choose-only way I got this shot with some colors

Below photo was taken on the first-we were totally fogged in for most of new year's day. I took those battery tea lights out of the luminary bags and set them back to burn out the rest of the way.  In front is last year's amaryllis bulb-no flower stem so far for this year.

Pretty sunrise New Year's Eve day

The squirrel proof bird feeder was a surprise gift from our new friends down the lake a bit.  I only put it outdoors when I can keep an eye on it-as the racoons would destroy it and the squirrels would try to Very thoughtful of them to gift us.

Not sure if my asthma is really bad or I caught a bad chest cold but it's been bad for a few weeks for me now.  The allergy medicine has now jumped to over $600.00 so I refuse to pay that-total craziness. So instead I have been brewing me a tea pot of dried elderberries, echinacea, and mullein  It has really helped to break up the tightness and congestion in my chest

Over the weekend I have been watching class videos on Craftsy. The last couple of years they have kept their yearly prices very very low-you just have to call them and they really knock down the price from what is originally quoted.  I really want to learn to paint better and to learn how to draw-so I have been watching those videos and have already learned new things.  One teacher that is an illustrator  showed how she paints with watercolors first and then when dry uses gouache paints to highlight. I have acrylic paints already and since they are water base too, am trying it out with what I have on hand already.  Instead of coming up with my own sketch for now-I traced a Crayola coloring page on to watercolor paper-painted it and then cut it into two cards for slow mail writing. I really liked using the two different paints, a good way to practice and then share as writing papers.

I was pleased with my first try

Below is the Crayola coloring page I traced

And you may remember this handmade journal I bought from Ink Torrents a few months back. I wrote my first entry New Year's evening with my black walnut ink and glass dip pen. I don't usually write into a daily journal, but I wanted to try this year writing down inspiring quotes and progress with my art adventures.

We did have one gorgeous sunny day so I could finally make the peanut brittle, also pistachio and cashew brittles.  Hoping the friends we are gifting this to- will find time to drive up for their goodies-if not my freezer is way too full and I will need to gift it elsewhere

This is the cashew brittle-I bring the mixture to 300 degrees first and then add in ground roasted nuts-it all "snaps" perfectly

I made it a different way this year, a little faster and just as good.

That's it for me --Here's to a Happy  New Year for all of us

  2. Sounds like childhood-memories - just our parents woke us up!
Nah, we went to bed early, I always wear ear protection...
Also... we don´t have a lake close by! ;-)
Oh, I love fog. We don´t have that here in the city, or just very seldom.
Peanut would go hungry in your place!

OH! Hope you feel better soon, I´m slowly on the way up.
Over 600 dollars?! Glad you found a more clever way - ha!

I love your art! As I cannot do my training I might youtube some art-sessions, too.
    Inspiring quotes sounds great.

Bet your friends will love the brittles (nothing I know, but reckon it´s sweet)....

To a Happy New Year, dear Kathy, hugs!

  3. Happy New Year Kathy. And hurrah for getting the nut brittles made. Finally-right? This year I did make it to midnight only because we were watching a good show on Netflix and had lots of episodes to get through. It's never very exciting though, but I guess it's nice to see the new year in. That's expensive allergy medicine. I'm glad mine is not that much. Although my shots are expensive, but I have a grant from the company that pays for them. At least I hope it's still going in 2023. I need to call and check that out. Happy early T day, and I hope you have a nice 1/2/23. hugs-Erika

    1. I know I didn't think I would every be able to make them-and now not sure when our friends can get away to come up oh well.
yes the drugs are very expensive and even more so next year-the govt has added 500.00 deductible on top of the high prices for medicare drugs-terrible thing to do to us seniors. we have to pay the price for Larry's medicines but for me I will make do.
I always enjoyed watching the ball drop with Dick Clark-but I don't care for that show anymore-happy with the country one in Nashville instead-great music. Happy T hugs

  6. I didn't see the ball drop because I was on the computer trying to leave comments to people while it was still 2022/ I also had to enter the admins at AJJ at midnight my time.

I was saddened to read you are having asthma difficulties. Your tea sounds good AND your pot is beautiful. Much cheaper than the alternative.

Lovely fireworks. I have that capability/setting on my camera, too. I like your drawings and colorings. They make great cards and gifts. Nice feeder your friends got you.

I'm now hungry for cashew brittle. It sounds so good. Thanks for sharuiung your art, your new feeder, your various brittles and your tea with us for T this week, dear Kathy.

    2. Senator Reverend Warnock, a democrat, was instrument in passing a bill that required insulin to cost NO MORE than $35.00 each dose, as opposed to before when it could cost over $1,000.00 each dose. Biden signed the bill into law. Warnock has vowed to take on other pharma companies for overcharging purely for profit and their stockholders, but it may be harder now the republicans are in control (or out of control) of the House.

  8. We used to make peanut brittle every year when the kids were still home. But cashew peanut brittle sounds even better. I must confess that I was in bed by 10 NYE. I never woke up, so must have been quiet out. Your artwork is lovely. I just can't draw or color well; I even watched a few classes! LOL Happy New Year!

  9. What a beautiful sunrise photo and also the fireworks. Here in Rotterdam they have banned fireworks but nobody took any notice and we enjoyed an hour of spectacular fireworks from our window on the 5th floor.
Mum and I both stayed up until midnight and then had the champagne ready to wish each other a happy new year.
The brittle looks yummy. I don't know what it is but it looks sweet and crunchy. I think I might like it.
I hope you will soon feel better. It's not the season for allergies, but I suppose it depends on what you are allergic to. This is the season for chest colds. Anyway, 600$ is a lot of money!
Happy T-Day and Happy New Year,
    Hugs,

    1. I think I slept through most of the fireworks-we usually see around an hour here at the lake during the holidays. I love to watch it, sounds like you had the perfect view to watch.
the brittle is very yummy and it is crunchy and sweet too. I have breathing troubles with big changes in weather-very very cold and then jumps up to very warm, or the pressure in the air changes drasctically it gets to my breathing-so I call it allergies-haha yes the $600.00 is outrageous and I won't pay that. Happy T and New Year Lisca

  10. The brittle looks absolutely delicious! I bet it didn't keep very long...
Soma makes beautiful journals, I am very tempted to buy one of her watercolor ones. The one that you got has such a beautiful image on the front, I remember when she showed it on her blog.
I hope your chest cold will be better soon. I agree, prices for medication is through the roof and I don't understand why so many people are against regulation of that. I guess they don't need it or have first-class insurance.

    1. The brittles are always a big hit-they are fun to make-I stash them in the freezer so we don't eat them-smiles.
I fell in love with this new cover design too from Soma, it is really a lovely book. I was looking at her watercolor journals too-I am not that good of a painter yet.Her journal pages are really nice to write on and handles my black walnut ink well
thank you, after several days this tea combination is really helping me-I am also taking an herbal antibiotic called Oreganol made from wild oil of oregano that is helping too. This year the cost will be very high for our medicare prescriptions-adding that $500.00 deductible for the year is a bit much for sure. Happy T

  11. Happy T-day, sweet Kathy.

I am impressed you even try to stay up on New Years. I was in bed by 8:30 as always. I gave up staying up late after about age 32 and even before then it was a struggle. I love fireworks but they are not enough of a draw for me and with sleep trigger seizures, I don't mess around with sleep.

Your home remedy looks so interesting and is so creative! I love the idea and if it saves on medicine, it is perfect.

The lake pictures are fabulous as always. Fog always makes me think of that book about the Fog that had all kinds of scary things in it. It is pretty though.

The brittle makes me wish I lived close by you so I could drop by and get some! Wouldn't it be fun if we lived closed by.

The art is fun and happy. Love it.

My husband never stays up either-I guess it is kinda of silly but I try to every year-and now on the lake I enjoy the fireworks. Happy T

  13. I am sleeping by midnight but Mr. M. wakes me for a new year kiss and happy wishes to each other. Then I am back to bed. LOL There were no fire works put on by the city or by locals. I think they were outlawed last year. Fine by me. Huuu, I am live trapping a pack of squirrels wish I could give them to you. I can't have them in my yard for garden season. I am taking them up to my landlords property. Good that you are taking classes. Every little tip learned helps an artist. The brittle looks so good. Have a lovely day today.

  14. I don't always make it to midnight, but I did this year, There weren't as many fireworks here as usual, though I did hear some. What a great songbird-friendly bird feeder! Thoughtful :) Basic health care as a profit-driven industry is seriously messed up :( I'm glad you have a tea that helps you. Your peanut brittle looks delicious. I haven't had brittle in ages, and I've never made it.

I hope using the two mediums .. watercolor and acrylic together revives your interest in painting.. I miss seeing your artwork Kathy.. I have been the proud recipient of one of your coloring page paintings that is just lovely.. What a clever idea to use them for cards and stationery.. Happy T day! 18. I don't generally stay up for NY eve, but this time the cats were ill and so I happened to be up until about 2am, but it was very quiet here, no people celebrating, no fireworks etc. I am so glad that we have the NHS and free prescriptions in Scotland (not the rest of UK) otherwise I would be struggling. Every year I make a tonic from elderberries, echinacea, chilli and a few other things and keep it on hand in case I get sick. I haven't been sick since we've had to wear masks so that's stopped me picking up any colds etc. Also coffee is good for (my) asthma so perhaps also good for your chest tightness? They say it's the caffeine but I drink decaf and it still helps. Love your art today and that brittle looks tasty. Have a wonderful week, Happy T Day! PS I did post a xmas card to you weeks ago, but the mail has been terribly slow but I think it does eventually turn upElle/EOTC xx

I hope your chest starts to feel better soon. Those herbs are a great combination. Licorice is also great for congestion.
