Painting Practice on a Thursday-Updated

I wanted to give another try with the ink and the sheep, and I like this one better as he looks like he is sitting down. Pleased with that.

So then I looked in this same book and I did a practice of rocks, a tree, and blowing grass with my watercolors.  The rocks may be a bit too dark but I am happy with this piece.

Do you think it needs a third cloud or something under the two? I have cleaned up the paints and ink so may add something tomorrow.

The strong and cold winds we were to get last night arrived today-and the temps have been dropping all day long. The wind has not lessoned as of yet.  I need to go out and bring in the small pots of petunias and especially the geraniums, and see if I have something to cover the hummingbird plants too. They even mentioned a wet snow could be arriving tonight what?? haha

Next week looks warm though so hoping I can get more accomplished outdoors.

I did decide to add a little a bit more-My eye still seems to go right to those two clouds. I didn't think a third one would work for me, so I took the suggestion of a line separating the sky from the land.  Time to move on to next practice session

  1. I think it looks great Kathy! I have heard groups of odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye.. 3,5,7, etc.. But i think it looks fine at 2 too.. I think its great you have a book to help you along.. Just the other day i was looking at a watercolor book in michael's and said to myself.. i bet my friend Kathy would love that.. ! Look forward to seeing more of your art my friend..

I went ourside today and used the weedeater on the weeds and grass we have coming through.. that will at least for the time being stop the weeds from releasing their seeds and making the situation worse.. Hugs! deb

It's been so cold here at night that I can't use the weed killer hoping next week it will warmer good idea to weedeat it to prevent the seeds

  5. Remember that shadows set items down, so they don't look like they are floating. I love the theme and all in all you did a fabulous job. Have a nice day.

  6. Good work
I'd add a cloud, a thin wash of palest blue, another eye on the sheep, and a tone down on the rocks. The scene has a lot of charm.

    1. thank you so much, I started with the sheep first as I was trying to get that better looking, next time I will look at the whole page first for I want to do-would be good to do the sky first I think, and those rocks were too dark for sure.

  7. I love that! I agree that a delineation between the sky and ground with a darker horizon works better than a third cloud, but the first one was still nice.

  8. I am definitely not an art critic, nor would I want to be! But, I do think you have done a great job with this lesson. I should get my new set of paints out and practice along with you. I have a couple of books on water coloring, but the one you have seems to have better exercises. We are bracing for freezing temps tonight! :~/

  10. You are doing well-don't forget to experiment on your own with out the book. Paint what truly inspires you and you'll be surprised how much you learn. This has been my experience anyway! :)

    1. Thank you, I need a little direction first and then I will branch out-I have no background at all in painting and have been intimidated with it. once I know more about what I am doing I will hugs

  11. Kathy it is great to see you painting and working with ink. So glad you shared your sketches with us. I know our crazy weather has me perplexed as well. Very chilly here this weekend but 70's again in the next couple of days with more cold weather in mid week. Praying Easter weekend is good - always like to see the sun shine that day. Take care - Hugs!

  12. Fabulous post! Loving that cute sheep and the addition of the darker foreground and sky worked beautifully as they offset the darker rocks 😁. I hope you have some warmer weather soon, take care and happy weekend! Hugs Jo x
