Food Wednesdays

Welcome Everyone to our Food Wednesdays

Food Wednesdays is a link up to share food posts with each other. Being all about the Food, there are no rules except the topic is Food-recipes, restaurants, cookbooks, history of food-what ever you would like to share with us about Food

This past week was another one with very up and down weather, so I didn't really make too much for us out of the ordinary or something special.

I did bake us an apple-blueberry crisp, it goes together well and easy to make gluten free and my husband loves these Instead of cutting up enough apples to fill the deep cast iron skillet, I filled it just half way this time. The crisp topping actually turned out allot nicer on top being not so full.

One of the few new purchase of cast iron pieces (most of my collection is finding pieces at sales that are vintage) that I have purchased and really love is the Lodge griddle pan. I love it and use it for grilling meat on the stove. (and makes using this electric stove top tolerable)

I have recently found in the grocery stores near me turkey tenderloins-they are sooo  delicious and juicy tender grilling them this way

I also wanted to share my favorite way of cooking fresh sweet potatoes. We both really love sweet potatoes and for us healthier than regular potatoes. I am still finding nice ones in the stores.   Microwave cooking ruins a lovely sweet potatoe, baking in the oven takes too long, but steaming them is perfect.  No matter the size I cut them in half for faster cooking-usually takes around 45 minutes,

I was not familiar with these steamers until I met my husband who had a large one just like this, and I found this smaller version at a garage sale-perfect  These come with two steamer racks that will stack. The large one I use to steam homemade tamales with.

When I am blanching fresh veggies for the freezer I prefer steaming them over putting them in boiling water.

Now it is your turn to share your Food Wednesdays post with us.

Please link up with the url to your post and not your blog's url thanks, and if you have time please check back late Wednesday to catch all the link ups.  Have Fun

  1. Your apple-blueberry crisp sounds lovely and also easy to make in the cast iron skillet. I'm not a big fan of sweet potatoes, however, there is a restaurant in town that makes really good sweet potato fries. I also had sweet potato gnocchi that were made with sage butter which was delicious.

  3. Your crisp looks yummy Kathy. And I've never heard of or thought of steaming sweet potatoes. What a great idea. I have a griddle pan and you are right how useful it is. I need to see if my store has turkey tenderloins. I haven't noticed them, but I like turkey better than chicken so it would be a good choice. Hope your week is going well. I need to go finish my post. hugs-Erika

    1. Hi Erika, I just discovered these turkey tenderloins a few months ago and I really love them, sometimes I see Butterball brand or one with no brand both good. I really like using the steamer, one day I thought of trying it with the sweet potatoes because I they always get destroyed in the microrwave haha

  4. You wake up my sweet tooth with this, Kathy! A bit. ;-)
I just bought such a "pottery strainer" for steaming, will check this is the near future. We have such a pan, too, but so far only Ingo uses it. Frankly, I can´t wait for the weather warming up, getting a new BBQ grill (ours have holes!!! Bu-huhh) and grill outside.

    1. great, and the crisp is not real sweet no sugar-I use splenda (a non sugar sweetener) on the apples, and in the topping I use coconut sugar-less sweet than brown sugar.
Yes so waiting for warmer weather to stay here too-and get to grilling outdoors again-

    2. I still have Stevia, maybe I can use that, finally! I used to make Ingo a ginger drink with that, but he doesn´t like it anymore and it was a lot of work.

  5. Just made apple crisp last night and topped it with some "n"ice cream. Yummy! I love sweet potatoes -- always roast them in the oven with a little olive oil. My husband only recently told me that he doesn't really like them. Who knew! :/

  6. I've made apple crisp before, but never in cast iron. Mine came out great in the oven. I have a steamer and I use it for veggies. I LOVE sweet potato fries and I deep fat fry them, making them really yummy and so full of extra calories. Never considered steaming them. Thanks for hosting this weekly event.

    1. this crisp is baked in the oven too, and can be baked in other types of pans -very adaptable for sure. I love sweet potato fries but have not tried making them from scratch-they do sound awesome fried for sure with those extra calories-smiles

    2. I have a tool that cuts fries. It's made for potatoes, but will work with sweet potatoes as long as they aren't bent too badly. It has little square blades. You put the potato on the blades, then swing the "pusher" over the potato. It forces the potato through the blades. They are the length of the potato. Not sure it makes sense. I'll photograph it the next time I make fries by hand or sweet potato fries. I have a deep fryer and it's one of my guilty pleasures.

    3. years and years ago-we collected so many kitchen items-we found a large professional tool like that for cutting fries. those are pretty handy. I never fried much in the past, but I would like to try fries next time I fry fish in a batter. I have a small deep cast iron pot that works out perfect for small batches of fried foods. we need a guilty pleasure once in awhile

  8. I have never been happy making a sweet potato at home.. I always have it out.. I have tried it in the microwave AND the oven but i have not steamed it.. I'm just happier with them out.. I do eat them out often.. The only time i eat a regular potato out is when i splurge on french fries..lol MMMmm your crisp looks good.. I actually like more crisp than fruit in mine.. Hubby may disagree with that but i'm not a huge fan of fruit in my desserts.. except maybe apple.. Happy Food Wednesday Kathy!! Hugs! deb

    1. we have always crisps, since moving to the lake house I seem to make more of them. my hands are beginning to have a hard time peeling the apples lately but good exercise for them I am thinking. I grew up with farm cooks so there was always homemade fruit pies. I have made some really good pies over the years-right now I like the crisps because easy to make gluten free
microwave really ruins the sweet potatoes, oven is good but I don't like to heat up an oven for just sweet potatoes-the steamer is really perfect

  9. Kathy my favourite part of the crisp is the topping! I have some apples I need to use so thanks for that suggestion! Your turkey looks delicious, I love the grill marks! Some people think I'm nuts, but I think that presentation makes food always taste better!! ☺☺ That's a neat steamer! I prefer steaming veggies over boiling as well, I'll keep a look out at the thrift stores, see if I can nab one!

    1. I agree we eat first with our eyes. It's always been just the two of us but I try to make it look good too. You will love the steamer, they are found in Japanese stores. I got lucky and found this smaller one too at a sale but it was the only one I ever saw at garage sale-thrift sale over the years-hope you find one.

    2. If you ever watch any of those cooking shows, at least 30-40% of the points go to presentation. It's equally as important as the taste, texture, and design.

    4. I agree too Elizabeth! Actually they say that drinking wine from the right glass makes it taste better too! ☺
