I have been thinking about getting back to slow mail and spending less time online.
Sending out birthday cards and holiday cards, and perhaps a postcard or short note, or dropping a handmade card in the mail to friends.
I do love finding mail in my mailbox it always brightens my day, and if you would like to do this too send me an email with your birthday and address. (I have a contact link on my page)
I apologize in advance for the length of this comment. I can relate. I totally understand, Kathy, I’ve felt the same way while realizing just how much computers have taken over our lives. While walking at our local school, I’ve noticed parents lined up in their cars waiting to pick up their children. That’s fine and necessary, but walking past these cars, it’s hard to find a parent without a smart phone in their hands. The same is true with sports at this school. Parents were at meets and games cheering their kids on. Again, that’s very nice, but smart phones were everywhere taking photos for immediate posting on Facebook or sending as email attachments. I wondered if the parents were fully engaged in their childrens’ activities, or if they were just “documenting” those achievements. We can’t turn the clock back to a time when things were different without instant electronics, but we can choose for ourselves how much of a role they will play in our own lives. For me, I’m grateful to have some benefits of electronic communication. As I’ve aged, my hands have become arthritic and writing legibly is very hard. But I can still hunt and peck on my iPad. So with staying in touch with family, shopping in these days of staying home, and banking, I must spend some time online. Blogging isn’t a necessity, however, and the time for me to leave that behind is not far away. The challenge is to learn how all of these things fit into our lives to bring us the most peace.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to let online activities take over our lives. I find I have to step away sometimes so I can actually do other things. I limited myself timewise when I go on, and do what I need to do first. That way when time is up, I am done. Unfortunately, there is only so much time in a day.
ReplyDeleteme too I am needing to find a balance right now
DeleteI agree. Finding a letter in my mailbox surely does brighten my day too!
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful idea, it's always so lovely to receive happy mail especially if it's handmade 😀. Happy Friday and have a wonderful weekend! Take care! Hugs, Jo x
ReplyDeletethanks so much Jo
DeleteYou won´t give up your blog after all, will you? Please don´t! I´d miss your lake-pics especially!!
ReplyDeleteMost snail mail here is bad mail - would love to get something good!
Very good idea! Hope you will still blog too..
ReplyDeleteReaching a balance between on the computer and not on the computer can be easier than you might expect. Prayers you find a balance that works for you.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there are only so many hours in a day and we have to balance them. Right now, I'm running late visiting. But as much as I enjoy snail mail and cards, it's my blogging community that keeps me going. Otherwise, I would be totally alone and feel imprisoned. I hope this doesn't mean you won't be blogging, because I would miss you if you did.
ReplyDeletethank you so much Elizabeth--that's how we are too very isolated with no one to visit with, just a couple friends we can call on the phone but they have very busy lives being younger than us.
DeleteI did delete my older blogger I started around 2005 or so because most of the photos are no longer there since I had deleted photobucket-sigh I will keep this up for now
I can relate to how you're feeling. I'm going to send you an email...
ReplyDeleteP.S. I didn't know one could disable commenting on individual posts. One learns something new every day. :-)
ReplyDeleteYes it's on the right side bar when you are writing your post
DeleteI wanted to express my feelings but didn't want to put up with the outright hatred of most that would post
Good morning Kathy, ok... morning here in this part of the world. I so love receiving post and miss the letters but I do like the fact that I get quicker replies from my sisters via email. I have kept up a continuous exchange of parcels every month with one of my sisters in the UK over the years. She sends me what I can't get here and I do the same; a really surprise package. When my postman rings that bell and tells me through the door intercom that he has a parcel for me I know then it is going to be a wonderful day. I also have to comment though that thanks to internet I can keep in contact with my family in Australia,UK and Dubai through video chats. I really do love that especially now. I have to agree with what what Bleubeard comments here! A question of balance. Keep well Amanda x
ReplyDeletegood morning Amanda, I agree it is a question of balance
