A Mixed Media Page & This and That

I have not been doing anything with mixed media, painting since early fall when I got into quilting.

Last week I dug out my watercolor pencils, water, and watercolor journal and did a painting of flowers in bottles. It wasn't too bad. I don't have the photos any more-so wasn't super great-but got me back into a little painting.

This morning I dug out one of my mixed media journals and decided to create a page. Had nothing in mind for sure-but did want to express we need more love, tolerance, respect for each other instead of all the hatred, and being attacked when one's opinion is different.

So I am pleased what I created. I glued down for the background one of those wet wipes I had used when I was playing with acrylic paints.  I remembered to save those. The photos are saved items from cards and magazines.

I did begin using my very vintage desk to write to my pen pals and to send off Birthday cards. At the lake house it finally is in the perfect spot. In the bedroom, on carpet, and facing the lake when I open up the blinds.  The rug is a hooked rug that my Mom had made back in the '50's. She learned the east coast style of hooking back then at a class at the ymca. This rug is on burlap, she dyed all of her reclaimed wools and cut into very very thin strips. Now they are doing 1/4" strips back then they used very small 1/32" up to 5/32" . One can achieve more detail using this size.

This is the only rug I have left of Mom's The few I had I passed on to a cousin who has children that he can then pass down to  I picked up the good color sense from my Mom.

Haven't made any gluten free brownies in some time. I still had a couple boxes of the mix I had picked up at Aldi's several years ago. (no longer an Aldi near me)  It is an excellent mix but it is high in sugar and carbs so just using up what I have for a treat.

I will not be joining T for awhile-I really need a major break from social media sites. If you missed it my last post was welcoming pen pals and or exchanging cards during the year-can send me a note in the contact form on my page if you like to stay connected that way, or even sharing photos etc through emails

.Closing with a photo of the eagles I took over the weekend.  First there was just one, then the second one flew in, and then later on they sat together.

Happy new week to all of you

  1. Your vintage desk is wonderful! Your Mother’s rug is the perfect complement, makes a very cozy space. I did some latch-hooking decades ago, but could not manage the hand strength for it now. The wet Wilson make a fun art background!

  4. We will miss you at T time, but I understand we all have to do what is best for ourselves. I hope you don't take too long a break, because I don't do e-mail except in emergencies and I'm only on Blogger.

  6. Your mom's rug is absolutely gorgeous. I sure hope that others appreciate all the hard work that went into her creations. Creating, crafting is always a good way to stay grounded and calm. Sometimes we need to limit what we are exposed to in order to maintain a peaceful spirit. I do not always understand the way some people think, but as long as everyone is behaving as a nice human, then that's what matters and we can agree to disagree. I wish our postal system was reliable. I'd love to have pen pals and send mail just because. Enjoy going analog. Take care.

  7. So glad to see your art again, that's such a sweet image and I love the background that you created - perfect 😁. The desk and light look perfect and the rug is so beautiful with the autumnal leaves. Those brownies look good too and it's always a delight to see the eagles, how amazing to see them up close so often! Wishing you a wonderful week! Hugs, Jo x

  8. Beautiful art. Delicious looking cake. I had to bake something, but somehow I don’t get anything done. Whiteboard templates and colors are waiting to be done in the study. Have been waiting a few years. I just can’t make art. Annoying a lot.

    1. Good morning, Thank you
my journal pages are mostly mixed media-and stress busters. I just go for it and see where my muse takes me. I would really love to get better with watercolor painting but that will take lots of practice and learning. let your mind go neutral and just go with it

    1. Hi this is such a nice spot for letter writing. This desk came from England-one of Larry's uncles traveled around in search for vintage items in Europe many years ago-probably 30 now. Larry fell in love with this piece-it is finished on the back too so it can be viewed from all angles. I did really enjoy writing a few letters here-made me happy.
I have a rug in progress that I need to finish-it's more of a primitive style with the 1/4" strips and I had gotten too many loops hooked and the piece is starting to buckle a bit--I need to look at it again and see how to finish it up.

  11. I like the snowman in your art piece. That desk is fantastic looking! (I love it.) Your Mom's rug is beautiful. It's nice you have something she made, to remember her every time you see it. The brownies look good. I always like seeing Bald Eagle photos.

  12. What a pretty little desk! It's nice to have a place like that for your mailing projects :) The eagles must be such a joy!

If it weren't for social media I'd have no human contact at all lol -well not much, anyway.

    1. we do look forward to seeing the eagles right now and probably up til early March we will see them quite often. I do love this spot for writing now
we are the same way we have little to no human contact unless it is the mail delivery people.
I need to back away from social media a bit right now-do to the hatred expressed everywhere, and no tolerance for an opposite opinion, that should be unexpectable no matter what anyone's views are.

    2. I've been involved in groups online for decades. Remember Google Groups and Yahoo Groups and such from 20 years ago? I forget what came before those. People have always been enthusiastic in support of their positions. I call it rhetorical flourish ;) and don't take any of it seriously, though I do take the people expressing their views seriously (if you see the difference I'm drawing). I don't see hate; I see people with zeal and fervor who get carried away.

Anyway, we each handle these kinds of differences in the way that makes sense to us. I just much prefer hearing and seeing what the other folks are saying. And I do treasure the social interaction.

      You do you, as they say these days. Self-care is important, especially now. {hug}

    3. I do remember yahoo groups and was in several quilting and other craft groups I really enjoyed and learned from
the biggest problem right now for me personally-is many of us (conservatives) can not voice an opinion with out being called horrible names or racist and on it goes. the censoring of our free speech is unexceptable in this country, cancel culture is unexceptable, destroying businesses and private citizens because they do not go along with the left side of thinking is also not exceptable to me-to impeach a now private citizen a former President is unconstitutional I could really go on and on. I don't debate things because I won't be swayed from my beliefs and opinions and right now the other side will not either be swayed but at least our side is not working on destroying the other side.

  13. I can't believe your mom hooked that rug! Now I know where you got your talent. Beautiful antique desk too. I love your sweet cheery page. I'm about done with social media too. For me that means Facebook. I never got sucked into any other S&M platforms (that was not a typo).

Wishing you a happy week too. Hugs, Eileen

    1. Mom was amazing with her talents. she was brought up a farm girl and sewed everything for her home-everything most of our clothes as well.
we don't have smart phones so I never got into twitter or allot of those. I do not post on fb at all if it were not for my favorite author's readers group and use messenger like a text with people I would delete fb. I did go through all my posts-tooks me a week or so and deleted lots of posts and all of 2020
