Spinning & Cast Iron Peach Cake & a Little Catch Up

I have been spinning up a bag of baby fawn alpaca fiber the last couple of days. I had purchased it last year at Fiber U for the purpose of blending it with some of the bison fibers I have. I decided I didn't like that-the bison fiber was getting lost. and actually some of this alpaca roving is so difficult to draft out that it almost seems like it got felted a bit. kinda strange though.
When I was spinning the rolags from class-I had an ahaa moment with the spinning on my drop spindle. I have been struggling on improving my yarn-getting it finer and more even. I am not there yet but I am happy with my progress with this alpaca fiber. Still not all even, but much better-finally lol I actually like the uneveness in the hand spun yarn though-will be nice to weave with.

This is very very soft yarn I am hoping to weave up some scarves this late fall into winter-gotta get my looms going again.

I did get the rest of the tomatoes etc put up into pint jars-made it more chunky and without the cumin spice-will use it in our refried beans and other Mexican dishes.

I have been going kinda crazy the last couple months-gaining weight for no reason, just not feeling as energetic as I always am and just not feeling myself. Bugging my doctor to "fix this" ha ha after a couple tests and some changes in thyroid medicine              and then no medicine for awhile-we have discovered my thyroid has totally quit working. So I am thinking perhaps it will be easier to control with medicine only and not with medicine and some of my own. Don't know what this means exactly going forward and so far have not found information online.
Kinda relieved that I have been right all along-but can't get in to see the specialist til November-that is just craziness to me.  Oh well now I know my weight gain is not only because I am a senior (what my doctor kept telling me) but because of this.  So I will eat accordingly-less food ha ha
I wasn't going to go personal on my blog-but sometimes just feels good to type this up and get it out like talking to all of you that read this as a friend-we are pretty secluded in our woods. I have always said since retiring most of my best friends are inside my computer now.

I have a small pickle batch going that takes different brines for 2 weeks-I am half way on those.

I had not made us any sweets for some time as we are both working on losing weight and eating lots less carbs.  However I wanted a treat so I decided to grab a cast iron skillet and make a fresh peach upside down gluten free cake. It turned out delicious

I amazed myself that I could still flip this cast iron over on to a handmade pottery plate without breaking anything or messing up the cake It baked up so pretty

The cake was still warm when I snagged a piece so the whipped cream was melting Yum-wish I could share a piece with all of you

On the paper texture  on the hallway-I managed to get that wall done up to where I needed a ladder before Fiber U classes. After the classes I got the ceiling painted with kilnz-now I am at the part where I need to stretch and add the tissue paper with the wallpaper paste-I will be getting back to that soon.  We will be back to hot and humid by tomorrow so will be indoors again for most of the day again.

Hubs got to go night fishing with his friends last night-for catfish. They caught a bunch so I am thinking fried catfish dinner will be coming up soon-we are all ready for another one of those.

Still working on the hand quilting but now I have switched to spinning for a bit-it really relaxes me with my drop spindle-love it.

I think I am caught up now 😊
Good night all and Good morning to my friends over the ocean and else where

  1. I enjoyed your fun filled catch-up post Kathy. I think your spun alpaca rolags are wonderful. I think "nubby" will add just the perfect amount of texture that will give your pieces the extra "pop" it deserves.

So, so sorry to read about your thyroid. I wish I could blame any weight gain on a thyroid, but mine is just me putting more food in my mouth. I hope your specialist can figure things out. I agree that our health care system is a joke. I can't believe how many specialists my friend Sally has. She has one for every body part. I don't even have a GP.

Your peach upside down cake looks amazing. SO beautiful and really looks good enough to eat. Wish I was there sharing a piece of it with you. I LOVE it when you bake.

  3. So sorry about your thyroid. Hope you can get that straightened out. Too bad you have to wait so long to see the specialist. Your yarn looks so soft. I just want to reach out and pet it. That cake is amazing. I can't believe you got it out of the pan without a single crack. Well done. Enjoy your day

  4. I’m eager to try my alpaca yarn now, Kathy. Yours looks splendid! I think we both have had a breakthrough after watching the video on drafting. We want even har, but at the same time some variations in that are lovely. I mean, if it was perfectly even, we might as well buy our yarn. Don’t want it to look that commercial. It’s annoying when needed meds cause weight gain, but sometimes we have to accept that. Staying active can help, but I’m not worried about you becoming sluggish! I don’t know how you do the walls and ceilings, I’d not be able to bend my neck back that far! Your upside down cake looks awesome. We all deserve a treat like that once in awhile!

  5. I have thyroid issues also, and now I just stick to the meds for that. It is too important of a hormone for the body to go through ups and downs I think. (I went through the same thing-on med, off med, back on med). NA dboy does your peach upside cake look delicious. I have a sourdough starter and when I feed it I make some pizza dough and have been cooking it on my grill in a cast iron pan. Yummy! And I think your spinning is looking great. Not sure how fine you can make alpaca. I've only ever seen it a bit on the thick side when I yarn shop. Happy weekend. Hugs-Erika

  6. Yes thyroid runs our bodies.
This cake turned so super moist too. I would love to see photos of your sourdough pizza on the grill-I have not made a pizza on grill in ages-and we loved it-thanks for the inspiration-hugs Happy weekend to you as well

  7. I'm sorry about your thyroid problem but glad you now know what the problem is and will be seeing a specialist to help you work your way through it.

That cake looks delicious! Maybe there'll be some left to have as dessert after that fried catfish dinner :) That's a meal that can't be beat!

  8. Sorry to read about your health problems Kathy, I hope the medications do the job and keep you well until you get your appointment to sort things through. It can be a real problem waiting to see specialists here as well.[UK]
I would love to be able to share a slice of your upside down cake it looks delicious.
Your yarns also look lovely, the items you make must be so warm and cosy.
    have a good weekend

    1. Hi I think something needs to be done about the very long wait times to get into a specialist perhaps there is not enough doctors to go around for everyone
this cake turned out super moist-was really good this time. I have yet to weave with my handspuns-soon I hope
      Happy weekend

  9. THYROID issues are such a hassle!!! I've had them since my early 20's and am constantly changing the meds dose. The cake looks so good and I think you have that drop spinning down now :)
