Too Cold

I grew up in northern Indiana so we always had lots of snows, blizzards, and very cold winters there.  Same with northern Illinois where Larry and I  lived during my working years at the phone co. I had to drive through blizzards to get to work back then. I was a telephone operator back then-when we were really needed, so had to come to work no matter what. I usually would sleep over on the couches in the lounge area and work lots of overtime.

My old senior bones are Not handling this bitter cold snap this time around. Supposed to end on Wednesday.

This lake house is soooo cold. I have the heat set to 72 F otherwise the bill would be too expensive. I don't remember being this cold all the time. I don't like wearing shoes in the house, I wear old socks or wool socks instead-so that's an issue I could fix I suppose.

Sorry about complaining. So glad Larry talked me out of wanting to retire to the western mountains. I wouldn't have liked the long super cold winters there for sure. My author friend lives at the base of mountains in Montana-where it is minus 35 and lower during the winters-ugh. With lots of snow. So I need to stop complaining as I look towards the warm up mid week.

The first year we bought the lake house Larry had insulation blown into the attic. There is no insulation at all under the floors that are exposed to the basement. Temps at minus 4 F are really cold, and with a non working woodstove-the previous owners had a major chimney fire-I am just bumbed about being cold for the last several days.

  End of rant

  2. I always wear my slippers. The high today was 7. Supposed to be cold until Thursday for us here. I had to get gas in my car , so not so fun doing that today. I could not live in the mountains myself either. Janice

    1. I remember getting gas on a very cold day when I was driving to work-always had at least an hour commute each way- you live in the mountains?? I love them but thinking winters would be difficult for seniors

  3. As you said, it’s supposed to end soon, by Wednesday so relief is on its way. I would have a hard time in that cold because I’m just not used to it. To me a daytime high of 40 is blizzard weather. 😃

  7. My heat is 72 also and the house still feels a little bit chill. OK, more than a little bit. It will pass and when it's 90 and humid we'll be laughing about this but right now I have on two pairs of socks under my fleecy slippers and a turtleneck under polar fleece!

  8. Hi Kathy-we are cold here too. But next week a heat wave is coming-it will be in the mid-thirties. We lost our power last week-twice-one time for almost 24 hours. I'm glad it was in the 40's outside, but still, the house got cold. We had to go to a Dunkin to charge our phones. It could have been much worse though. Hang on-spring is coming!

    1. that is scary for sure when you lose electric and heat during a cold blast like this-stay warm hugs

  9. Sorry you have the chilly drafts there

I've been told those cute wood stove electric heaters can throw off good heat. Heaters can be scary, but they aren't as poorly made as years ago. Only used when a person is there to tend them is a good rule.
I use to wear legless tights when I lived in a chilly apartment. A knit has helps as well.

    1. I did buy a small electric heat a couple years ago-but haven't used it as I forgot the electric in this house is very outdated so don't want to overload it yes a hat does make a difference

  10. Look! I'm back online!! I walked into the bedroom today and hubby surprised me by setting up a little table with my laptop , mouse and all the 'things' so i could have a little place to enjoy some time online.. awwww... such a thoughtful thing to do.. I'am a little lost without some down time on the computer with a cup of coffee.. I'am usually sat at the kitchen table with my labtop and coffee and drawing pads.. just my own little space.. I've enjoyed it that way for years... We don't often eat at the kitchen table but with all the kids here its being used.. Oh its COLD here too and i'am Sooooo over it.. I'm sure not as cold as you.. but i do not like not coming above freezing for days... Today it got up to 29F when they promised us 35F! Tomorrow is 55F for a high and only35F for a low! Woo hoo!!! No moisture with this cold though so at least theres that! Take care Kathy! Be safe and warm.. We keep it at 68F day time and 60F at night.. , faucets dripping.. Hugs! deb

    1. Good morning Deb, that was so thoughtful of your husband to set that up for you-our guys are special aren't they?? hugs we are suppose to finally get out of the negative numbers at night-this morning early its 13 degrees and today around 37 degrees-thats a huge warm up-it may even melt the couple inches of snow here on the steep hill and steps I have not been feeling good since the weekend so hoping the wam up will help I would freeze now if the thermostat was that low-this house is just sooo cold at least we did not lose any pipes like our lake friend did hugs

  12. Here in the UK we have been experiencing colder weather.
I always wear slippers in the house they do keep me warmer when the temperature drops, and warming soups are a blessing and comfort.
Hope your weather starts to get warmer soon.

    All the best Jan

  13. Hi Kathy-You mentioned a seed catalog in your comment. I think I know the one you mean. It is full of colored photos and has seeds for plants from all over the world. And yes, if I'm thinking of the same one, they are out of Missouri. I'm trying to remember the name, but I think it might be the whole earth catalog? I have a couple that I've picked up at Tractor Supply and I love reading them and looking at the photos too. Hope it's a little bit warmer for you. hugs-Erika

  15. How come I missed you all week???!!!! I am sorry. It is nonsense but I am so nervous about the train eventually being on strike and I hate flying and I have trouble with a colleague and I WANT to finish this part of my project.
I totally understand your trouble, I am so done with winter!!!
Usually this starts in February, I cannot remember a November and December so darn cold and with snow! 1 1/2 hours outside in -9C / 15F when the cellar was on fire really was enough for me! Yikes! I am so with you! Hope you two are doing OK by now!!!! Hugs to you and the lake!!!

  16. I grew up in NJ and when I was young in the 1950's we had LOTS of blizzards and cold weather in the teens. Now our weather is much warmer and much less snow. In fact, I don't think there has been a blizzard in 20 years. That being said, we still don't like the cold weather and we have moved to Florida for the winter. I don't blame you for complaining about the frigid cold weather. It is difficult. Hoping it warms up for you.

  17. Hey complain all your want. Getting it out helps. I lived in heavy snow country all my adult life. I use to snow camp and bow hunt and hike in thigh high snow. Since I am older I can't handle the cold at all. Living in Oregon on the coast is cold all the time. The wind is like ice. Do what you have to to keep warm.
