Flowers and a Lovely Lady

 Good morning everyone,
I made it back into my craft room this morning. I wanted to make a mixed media page in my journal for flowers and in the process of going through papers, I found an envelope filled with 1800's photos. I had picked those up at a garage sale years ago before retirement when we were living in northern Illinois. The photos were glued down to very heavy card stock.

I found a pretty lady with flowers in her hat and so I went from there.

I gessoed the page first then glued down green tissue paper with glitter, settled for these flowers and tore the edges added the vintage photo-I cut it down, and stamped a couple butterflies.
This is a simple entry but I hope you like it.

This was on the bottom of the photo so added it to the top page

I will be sharing at Art Journal Journey for the theme flowers, and at Try it on Tuesday for the theme lovely ladies.

  1. There are a number of themes in this piece, Kathy. It’s wonderful to share it so widely. It’s hard to imagine what was once stylish.

  6. Can you image wearing hats like that? It is quite pretty but in today's world it wouldn't work. But it would be nice actually have pretty hats like that. Sometimes that is! Thanks so much for joining Mia's challenge and also our Try It On Tuesday challenge. Hope you have a great weekend. Hugs-Erika

    1. I think in England the royalty still wear hats, and at Kentucky Derby women wear hats-but not as extravagant
I never liked hats I remember when I was young my Mom and Grandma wore them

  9. A garden in her hat and you've turned her into a pretty flower on your page. My mother wore hats. I didn't like wearing hats. Well, I hated the elastic that went under your chin.

  12. What an amazing lady. I wonder if it was originally a cabinet card that had been taken apart, since it had the heavy cardboard on the back. If it is, you have a fortune on your hands. I would scan them for use rather than using the originals. They could be quite valuable.

It's amazing how styles have changed. Look at the collar on the lady's dress. She is definitely modest and rather Victorian. Of course the hat sets her apart. Thanks for sharing this incredible collage with us at Art Journal Journey, using Mia's theme.

    2. Part of the way you can tell if it's a cabinet card is the size. I think you have some. You should do an internet search.

Wikipedia gives several examples and helps you date the cards.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabinet_card

This site shows the type of cabinet cards I'm most familiar with and the sizes.
      https://www.thoughtco.com/identifying-and-dating-cabinet-card-1422271

This site tells you how to identify your cabinet cards by size, mount, and edges.
      https://blog.scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk/find-out-when-a-photo-was-taken-identify-a-cabinet-card/

Hope this helps. Also, they were quite popular a few years ago because mixed media artists altered them.

Go here to see some altered cabinet cards. Click on images if you want to just see those. My art and shopaholic friend Kathy paid $10.00 each for hers just so she could alter them.

From the same search, here is a lady who found some fabulous ones.

  13. What a wonderful find, no wonder you felt you had to have those photographs. This is the perfect way to start off a journal page and just add something complimentary in the background like the flower piece and then the green with the butterflies. A great page.
