Another Rare Sheep Breed

I did get some grass cut early morning before we got hot and humid today, progress but more to do My back lasts for 3 of the batteries for the weed eater

Yesterday I worked with the Navajo churro wool, and discovered it still has too much lanolin in the wool even after washing a couple years ago. So I set that aside and looked for a wool I bought back in 2016 that is even more rare and has an interesting history North Ronaldsay. This one has two layers, the under coat is soft and then there is a long top coat that is more coarse. I worked on separating some of it today. I grabbed my drop spindle and my hand carders. After a few tries I decided I got a nicer yarn using a layer of the softer wool on the bottom of the carder and added the coarser wool on top-card and then make into those rolags to spin. This is a really large bag of wool too and was not processed at all when I bought it. I am loving it though and it is a very dark brown to black. I like spinning these rarer wools and learning about their history-this sheep lives on sea weed see why in link below

This link is a good one for it's history, location, and uniqueness

The brown colors of these wools are very similiar but the wool I worked with today is darker and parts of the fleece almost black

Sunday we are to get to 104 degrees F so I will be out at daybreak working on cutting more grass
My eyes have gotten worse over this past year and I will need new glasses for sure-we see the specialist this coming Wednesday He is an excellent eye surgeon and eye specialist we will need to drive an hour and past our woods home. Last year he told me I had the start of glaucoma

Have an awesome new week everyone Stay cool and safe if you are in this heat wave too

  1. I wish you fun with the wool, an easy cut with the grass and ohhh... all the luck with your eyes - fingers and toes crossed all gets well!!! Hugs to you and the lake!

  2. I wish you luck with the grass. I mowed mine before it got so hot. Yesterday we hit 108 F. Not pretty at all. Thankfully, I didn't have to go out.

I loved learning about those sheep. Only about 3000 left. Vulnerable is right! They are really unique indeed. I bet that wool will spin up well.

Have a super Sunday and a great week, dear. Good luck at the eye doctor, too.

    1. Hi Elizabeth I was up at first light and cut more grass-its humid too so still got to me, a little each day will get it done eventurally
I fell in love with this sheep when I read about. I found a seller on etsy in England that sold raw fleeces for all sorts of breeds. I am going through it now-I had washed it already but still has bits of grass. and at the bottom of this bag I discovered a light brown and white-so I don't remember now if the seller through some of that in. she was very ill at the time and I got some of the last of her wools
It is so hot today that I pulled the blinds closed on the big windows to keep the sun out of the house take care and thanks for visiting

  3. Hubby has had the 'start of glaucoma' for a few years now. It must be progressing slowly... I hope you hear good news from the eye doctor. Good to have one you like and trust.. Here even the weeds have pretty much stopped growing with the heat and no rain.. I don't want to do more weedeating .. i'm 'over it' for this year lol. I'm sure i'll have to so some yet.. I may not want to do anymore weedeating but i sure would love a good rain shower.. Glad to hear you are enjoying more wool ... I think i would enjoy learning about the sheep too. I'm finishing up those honeycomb paint holders.. I got a few drips in the clear coat so now i have to go back and figure out if theres anything i can do about that besides just sanding it off and starting over... NOOOoo... Big hugs from TX!!! deb

    1. Hi Deb, when we had no rain for a couple of months it was great-no grass-weed cutting, and it all burnt up-loved that then we got a couple weeks of lots of rain and humidity and it all grew sooo fast high it is over 12 inches now which takes me longer-and now this is really getting to my back big time.
I enjoy searching out the rarer breeds and finding the wool-I am going through the big bag now and getting more of the bits of grass out-this was a raw fleece when I bought it-and I had washed it too.
Oh bummer about the drips on the clear coat-that would be me for sure-if it doesn't show up allot I would not redo put a bee over it hugs from the Lake

  4. Very interesting on these different breeds of sheep. My great uncle on my dads side raised English sheep. I so loved their black faces. Janice
