Christmas in the Kitchen

This week I have been making up Christmas treats to gift, Mostly for our workers that are friends and always there for us when we need them.

I have made two batches of peanut brittle and one batch of cashew brittle early in the week. The cashew brittle is for Larry.

I made gingerbread and white sugar cut out cookies to gift-so those are wheat cookies. Will frost them tomorrow. I also made up three batches of dark chocolate bark with nuts and candied fruits for toppings.

I guess do to my age now, my back really gets to me working in the kitchen over a few hours now. So  I take a break with the heating pad-smiles.

I will make up a batch of the chex mix to gift most of it-I use gluten free cereals, crackers and pretzels. That freezes well too. I may also bake up a batch of my chocolate popcorn-so good-that freezes well too.

I grew up making dozens of different Christmas cookies-always fun for me to dig out the now vintage cutters.

Amazon just now put my camera in the mail-that was really slow for them to mail out almost 2 weeks. Hopefully it will come by end of this week and will work out better than the previous two cameras.

I started watching the Mo Town Christmas music show tonight-I recorded it to skip through all the commercials. It was really good. Mo Town records started when I was 10 years old, but I remember enjoying the music into the '60's  The only Christmas music show I have enjoyed so far.

We woke up to just a dusting of a little snow-that melted right off. We are back to pretty cold again though, but thankfully I have not had to dig us out of snow. Last year we didn't get any snow at all.

I also got most of my Christmas cards into the mail. The international ones went out this past Monday so hoping those arrive in time. I do still enjoy sending out cards-I get very few in return but it is one thing I enjoy doing. I bought stamps before the last price hike. I usually make my own but I found really nice cards on Etsy that a watercolor artist turned into high quality cards with envelopes.

Enjoy December and the Holidays my friends.

  2. How wonderful, Kathy, that you take the time to prepare homemade treats to gift to friends and others. I am sure they will be enjoyed by everyone. Chocolate popcorn would be a treat as it combines two of my favorites i also still enjoy sending cards and like yiurself will get less than sent out. I have trimmed my list over the years. Hope the new camera arrives soon and is the one that works best for you.

    1. It is something I enjoy doing-and we don't need to eat much of it any more smiles. I have an excellent chocolate popcorn recipe that remains crunchy-so good. I trimmed my card list a bit too this year Happy Holiday

  3. It's so much fun to make Christmas cookies, isn't it? Making cookies in the summer always is fun and they taste good, but somehow it doesn't have the excitement of making them in December. At least that's true for me, and I wonder why? Maybe if I eat too many cookies in the winter at least I have big warm clothes on to cover that up-grin. Hope the camera arrives and works great. hugs-Erika

    1. Hi Erika, I agree Christmas baking is fun for me too. that's funny about eating too many cookies-smiles I am thinking I may just make me a batch of gingerbread cut out cookies-and make the cut out sugar cookies for me-gluten free-end of January or February. Am hoping this camera will work out too hugs

  4. I will make chex mix and I have been baking cookies for two days. I give to the highway dept here in our little town. They are called out all hours I try to make things they can grab and go. I am also taking some to my grands this weekend we will decorated them so she can give them as gifts to her friends.
I have a few more cards to get out the time is going so fast this year, it is probably my age but it goes faster and faster each year.
We had so much rain the past two days but we still have some snow left even though we lost a lot of it.
    hugs

  6. Kathy it sounds like the kitchen is a hot spot of good baking...I as well enjoy giving home baked goods to friends and neighbors. That is one of my most favorite things about Christmas... Shopping not so much - never know what to buy that would make someone smile. Well stay warm friend...it is 6 with the wind chill and a light dusting of snow - but sunny! Suppose to be in the 40's by Saturday...up and down...like the up better than the down! :)!! Hugs!

    1. brrrr sounds cold there. we did have a stretch a very very cold but no real snow so far-fine by me haha. I agree I love christmas baking very much, and I don't shop for gifts I would make a gift instead-kinda sad but no family for gifting any more. I did get a gift this week though by brother who denounced me years ago-who knows why sadly-called me to apologize we talked for several hours-so that was my christmas this year.
      take care hugs

  8. Wow -- you are a baking machine! I have to start my baking today or tomorrow. Not going to do as many as usual, maybe only three or four and most all to give away; some to save for dessert on Christmas day. Well done! My new camera arrived last week; I opened the box, realized it was too big and sent it back. I'll order the next size down. I'd hoped to have it for Christmas; maybe New Years! Have a really beautiful Christmas, Kathy. I hope your new year brings good things and good health.

    1. I don't know why comments don't publish sometimes-I did check in my blogger comments section and not there either. This morning I started making the chex mix-I use all gluten free cereals and crackers no nuts and gluten free pretzles. I will add a big bag of it the treat boxes I am making up.
If we lived closer I would help with the cut out cookies and bring a stash of my cookie cutters-stamps-molds

    2. I gave away all the peanut brittle as I love nuts but my body doesn't digest them -ugh-the brittles are so addictive too so good have fun with the grands

    4. Melt 8 cubes of almond bark in microwave 2 minutes , add 1 cup of peanut butter and stir around until melted, pour that into a shallow container or pan of some sort... (helps if its flexible) I use the a rubber maid lid off of a large container... Melt half a bag of choc chips and drop by spoonfuls on top of almondbark/peanutbutter mix..... use a fork to swirl it around... let it cool and harden then cut into squares... YUM! TigerButter... A friend gave me that recipe 20 years ago.... She called it TigerButter never knowing my maiden name is Tigar pronounced like the animal... lol Hugs! deb

  11. We sure bake different stuff, but my back is as bad as yours, I reckon. I take loads of breaks, too. (But then I got scoliosis in a mild form).
My postie was nearly devastated, saying - prices are raising I hope I can match yours still (he did). Hugs to you and the lake - have a nice weekend.
