Rain's Art and Dinner Date

 Good morning Friends,

I am posting today for Rain's Art and Dinner date-link in my sidebar. We share art and/or food- a perfect pairing.

I didn't follow the prompt this week, but I have gotten out my watercolor paints and watercolor inks this week. Monday, I found my watercolor postcards that I have had for awhile now. When I was just getting into painting I was following tutorials more and one site was selling these postcards on discount. So I painted and stamped some of them or used only watercolors, and sent them off to my usa slow mail friends. That was fun.

Tuesday morning I decided to get out a piece of watercolor paper and paint flowers inspired by a calendar photo I had saved. I must remind my readers I am a total novice when it comes to painting. I used watercolor paints and inks.

My first piece I didn't like at all, thought I could salvage it a bit with stamps nope, I will just fold it in half and use it for slow mail

The second attempt was better, but not sure why I did the flower petals so small.

This was my inspiration piece. I used to think that looking at a photo was "cheating" but after watching a video using acrylics the artist says no it is good to use your own photos or another reference and not rely on memory.

Note all photos will enlarge just click on them

For this second painting after I put in the background I grabbed my black walnut ink and dip pen and outlined the flowers and stems first. Made sure it was dry and then used watercolor paints. The darker green in the grassy area is alcohol ink
I am fairly pleased with this for me, but would have been better with larger petals Also the photo reference did not have leaves, but on my version thinking I should have added some large leaves to the stems--always learning

I made a couple batches of keto ice cream recently. This is the recipe I follow  I use the swerve powdered sweetener and xylitol. These two sweeteners combined help to make the keto ice cream creamy.

Warning though xylitol will kill dogs, not sure why as it is made from the birch tree and is a natural product.

I also double the recipe, use cream for the condensed milk recipe and then switch over to 1/2 and 1/2 for the rest of the recipe-after using the last cup of the cream in the quart container.

I added fresh strawberries and blueberries to the first batch. I also used strawberry extract instead of vanilla extract.

The second batch I turned into a chocolate espresso ice cream-soooo good my favorite so far.  Follow the same recipe at the end of making the condensed milk add 3 ounces of dark cocoa I use Hershey's special dark as it has a rich flavor-I also added in two tablespoons of espresso powder, and for the rest of the recipe added in vanilla extract.

it does take 30 minutes of constant stirring of the cream to begin the condensed milk recipe

The sweeteners and the butter added to above

then the espresso, cocoa, whisked til blended and the xanthan gum let sit for 10 minutes covered then continue on with the recipe

I usually make this early morning and then mid afternoon it is ready to churn. I found if I let it sit over nite it seperates too much

For me this was well worth the money

added these in at the end.  I think I will leave these out next time, they are very hard after the ice cream has been in the freezer, and I think I cracked a crown-ugh can't believe that happened-so do not want to go the dentist and it's a long drive too.

Last week I needed to use up fresh apples and frozen peach slices so made up a crisp with gluten free oat flakes and oat flour I used Splenda to sweeten the fruit (I no longer bake with sugar) and sprinkled instant tapioca (gluten free) and baking spice as I layered the fruits,  and in the crumble topping I used coconut sugar or sometimes I use swerve brown sweetener along with cinnamon.

Happy Thursday and thanks so much for visiting

  1. See, watercolors look difficult - I still did not dare to go at that! I think you need a very steady, calm hand, is that correct?
I have no patience and think that might be a huge problem (yes, I hear you: "Try it!"... mimimi...)
I think I need to watch some videos. Right? Argh.

30 minutes of constant stirring? Your arm did not fall off?
    Am I glad I don´t like sweets much ;-)

I would like to join - food-wise only - but the link at Rain´s goes to July 20th...?

    1. Good morning Iris, Yes watch some videos-no your hand doesn't always need to be steady at all Yes that 30 minutes is a real pain only hassle with the recipe-and I don't make my desserts taste real sweet and I no longer use sugar.
the link for Rain takes you to her most current post-mine is early so her newest one isn't up yet

  4. Your watercolors are uniquely YOU and thats what i love about them... I definitely have plans to try my hand at painting ConeFlowers too...My husband is of the same train of thought.. everything i paint should come from my mind and not any photo or picture.. well... i hate to break it to him.. i work like that sometimes as in the Fish Painting.. but if i'm trying to paint something realistic there's gonna be a photo or still life in front of me. I don't know where that notion of having something in front of you to go by is cheating.. I guarantee you the 'old master' painters ... if they were painting a bouquet of flowers they had a vase full of flowers in front of them.. Ok can you tell thats something that gets my dander up? I mean if someone is painting a portrait tell me they don't have someone sit for them or have a photo of the person? Geesh! You go girl!! The only time i say you would have to worry would be if you wanted to sell your image.. then i would work off of a picture you took yourself because of copyright issues.. Your food always looks divine and i bet it tastes even better! Hugs! deb

  5. Kathy is not bad if you do not go over the recommended amount. On the other hand, if we read the labels of the products we consume, we will see that it is there.
I read the following: Why is xylitol dangerous for dogs, but not for people?
In both people and dogs, blood sugar is controlled by insulin produced by the pancreas. In people, xylitol does not stimulate the release of insulin from the pancreas. However, this is not the case in dogs: when dogs eat something containing xylitol, it is more rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and can trigger a powerful release of insulin from the pancreas.
This rapid release of insulin can lead to a rapid release of insulin that can cause a large and rapid drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that can occur within 10 to 60 minutes after consuming the xylitol. If left untreated, hypoglycemia can be life-threatening, notes Dr. Hartogensis.

  8. I think it is great that you practice so much - and I do like your attempt of painting the echinacea. In my opinion, flowers aren't that easy to paint. The inspiration picture is beautiful, I can understand that you wanted to paint it.

  9. So much good food today Kathy. I need to make some ice cream. And I just want to mention that not all natural items are healthy. Obviously foods you buy have been checked, but just because something is from nature doesn't mean we can ingest it. But you know that I am sure. And nice flower drawing too. I hope your week is going well and is cooler than last week. hugs-Erika

  10. I have started some very basic exercises in watercoloring. I will need lots of practice, for sure! You have come far with your lessons. You do make the best fruit crisps ever; glad to see that iron skillet. We are still waiting on rain and cooler weather.

  11. Your echinacea look good, Kathy. I'm not really a person who draws, so I appreciate that you are using your new art supplies to learn and study how they behave.

Your ice creams turned out great. I especially like the looks of the chocolate.

Happy TADD. I couldn't play this week because I have too many things on my plate. Glad it cooled for you and you got some rain. St. Louis has some horrible floods, so I hope you missed the flash flooding they got.

  20. Oh Wow Kathy, let me start with the food....I think that your chocolate espresso ice cream is TO DIE FOR....wow! Just looking at it before you froze it looks tantalizing for me!! ☺ Btw, thank you for mentioning that xylitol will kill dogs, oh my. I didn't know that! I will never touch it! I have a Cuisinart ice cream maker too! I love it! Your peach and apple crisp looks great!!! Okay, your art. Firstly, I DO think it's a great idea to have a photo reference. Personally I don't have a great memory and I can't imagine what the little nuances are in each, flower, for example - to be able to paint it. When I do my portraits, I use reference photos (of course!!) and I create stencils from the photos to transfer to my canvas. Those who say it's cheating are a little high on the horse in my opinion lol, if they have a perfect memory where they can recreate realism, more power to them, but there's nothing wrong with having a reference. so there lol...now I'm off MY high horse ha ha!...there is no CHEATING in art if you're a real artist, which you are!! ♥♥ I think you're doing a GREAT job on your flowers, keep up the good work!

    1. Hi Rain, and happy Saturday and weekend too. we are about to get more rain anytime soon today.
This chocolate-espresso ice cream turned so delicious! very creamy, sometimes the base turns out a bit grainy but this was excellent. I have used xylitol off and for many years now, but when I learned it would kill dogs I stopped using when we had dogs-for many years. at our ages now mid 70's we decided not fair to have another fur family member. I think the recipe may share an alternative for the xylitol.
I love this ice cream maker. I ordered it online and then it was back ordered for many weeks-but I got it at the original price as it had gone up allot. I really love it.
thanks for your views about the painting. when I was just getting into I thought I needed to paint from memory til I saw that video-he had the same comments that you have. thanks for the encouragement my painting is a work in progress haha

  21. Oh my, Kathy, I seem to get later every week when trying to comment on everyone's art and food. I hope you even check back to see that I have been here and thoroughly appreciate how difficult it is to paint things that look like you want them to. I think you did a grand job on the cone flowers and next week you can add in the Gold Finch :)
As for your ice cream we have already discussed my love for it and now you have introduced new flavors that are to die for. I don't have an ice cream maker (self preservation is my excuse as I would eat every drop of ice cream before anyone even knew I had made it ) I try to keep my weight down to "normal" at my age because of health issues. That doesn't mean I can't appreciate what you have made and the apple crisp ... one of my favorites and potentially good for you, right? Anyway, I don't use any artificial sweeteners because they are all bad for you, not to mention how they would effect our pets. I use Stevia if I need some sweet. Made from the Stevia plant it has been deemed safe by those who would know. So always lovely to visit with you, Kathy ... Be well and keep painting :)

    1. Good morning Andrea, it is a challenge to visit everyone some weeks, but at Rain's it seems it is ok to visit everyone when you can and that is perfectly fine with me instead of only on thursday.
I believe the keto sweeteners are not artificial, the xylitol comes from birch trees-not safe for dogs, splenda is not artificial either but thinking it is chemically altered or something. better than what was available before splenda. I don't use any sugar as my husband has diabities and heart issues. Instead of making pies I have gone to crisps instead-still carbs in the oats but I think it is healthier than pie crusts-although when I do make a pie crust these days I make it with ground almonds or pecans. stevia I have used but they still have not totally proven to me that it doesn't cause cancer in women so I stopped using that one years ago. I was buying Lily's chocolate products I really like them but they are made with stevia. hard to know what is safe for us these days though.
thanks about my painting-Hope to get better with the watercolors one day
