Rain's Art and Dinner Date

Hi Everyone, if it is very hot and humid where you are-hoping you are able to stay cool. We are back in the 100's this week-not counting heat index.

You are most welcome to share your art and dinner date post with Rain's link up in my side bar. (and the dinner date was our food wednesdays)

I don't usually follow prompts but this week was poetry  so I thought I would give this a go.

I searched online for poems about sunrises over water and found this one.

Sunrise at the Sea

God created so much beauty on earth-
Mountains and plains, hills and valleys,
But nothing can compare to a sunrise at the sea.
It is a miracle created just for you and me.

The sky and the ocean seem to blend
Together on the horizon.
Slowly the light slips
Over the line…

find the rest of the poem here

For this painting exercise,  I used watercolor paints, a stamp with ink, and the quote written with black ink and dip pen.
This was my second painting attempt-I loved another poem I had chosen and the painting much better, but then when I was refilling the ink pot-it splattered all over my painting-no way to fix it. sigh

So I just started over with a different poem. I thought the sunrise needed more and it may be too much more now haha. I am not totally in love with this piece.       This painting exercise did get me out of my slump of not creating so that was a good thing for me. I liked my water much better the first time too.  I will fold this in half and use for one of my slow mail letters.

For my dinner date share-I am terrible at remembering to take photos while I am in the kitchen-but I did get a few this time.

I like to grill pork tenderloins on my cast iron grill pan. I cut the tenderloins in half which is plenty of meat for the two of us now. To change up the flavors I use different herb blends and spices that contain no salt.  This time I used bbq spices

I served with wild rice and mushrooms. The wild rice comes from the Lakota in northern Wisconsin which my friends pick up for me. I have been buying canned mushrooms that are organic from a favorite online source Vitacost They have many organics and gluten free items that I can't find near me and they most always have coupons or sales going on too-especially if you sign up for their newsletter (no affiliate I just really like shopping there)

Tuesday morning very early, was my monthly food shopping trip. Every time I shop I can see the prices getting higher A pound of butter $8.00?? I don't think so, I am glad I keep butter in the freezer. I did find some big price drops for different meats at our small Wal mart store. They usually go through early mornings and drop the prices on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. I like to have a corned beef in the freezer and I found a nice one where they took off $10.00 Wow quite a big drop. I wasn't planning on buying meat this trip, but I also found $5.00 off of a package of 2 very large skinless chicken breasts, and price cuts on lean hamburger, and fajita meat.  I saved at least $25.00 or more on the meat purchases during this shopping trip.  I was stocking up on some canned fruit with no sugars added-and the Wal mart brands for most of those fruits was $1.00 a can, I don't think I could home can fruit myself for that price.

I haven't made the keto churned ice cream all summer so I bought the cream and half and half enough to churn up 2 different flavors-I will share my ice cream  next week.

So glad you dropped by for a visit, Stay cool and safe if you have this heat wave too.

  2. It's fun to see one of my favorite stamps show up in your art work.. The water looks great. I would love to be there to see the rising sun. Your grilled pork loin looks delicious. I usually bake ours in the oven but will try grilling it next time when it is just the two of us.

I started grilling tenderloins in my cast iron grill pan on the stove a few years ago-they turn out so moist and delicious-I wait til the pan is hot and I use an instant read thermomter to know when it's done

  3. Wonderful poem and painting is coming along nicely. Good deals on the meats that is the time to stock up I found split chicken breasts one week at .69 a lb I bought 3 large packs.
I made fried rice tonight we used up some fresh veggies in the frig and some left over chicken. Not pretty but tasty.
We are warmer than we have been all summer 90 and humid no my kind of weather.

  4. Well i enjoyed your painting Kathy... Its to see you dipping your toes back in creating again.. I hope it continues for you.. Your food looks delicious as always.. I never cook pork tenderloin and i should. I find it rather intimidating for some reason. You did find good deals! I always stroll down the meat aisle looking for Walmart mark downs.. sometimes only a few dollars but sometimes its quite a mark down.. Well you stay cool.. We were supposed to be 109F today but only got to 103F.. woohoo!! lol We had a clouds in the East this morning until about 9-10 am.. i think that helped keep the temp down a little.. Hugs! deb

    1. once I started using my cast iron grill pan I love doing the tenderloins-just like cooking outdoors- and the meat is always juicy and flavorful-need a hot pan to start out with.
yikes you are hotter than here, it does help allot if the day starts out cloudy. Yes the painting was good for my mental health-stay cool hugs

  7. Hi Kathy, I know it is hot there so stay as cool as you can. Our weather here never gets hot so we are OK in that department. I really love that you are creating in paints. You know it is all about practice and believe me even the finest artists around have art they don't like. However, that means someone else will. I love your sunrise and the poem. Hmmm pork sirloin. The stores here in my town are out of pork. No chops, roasts or loins. I did see some bacon but it was $22.00 for 3lbs. Uhhh no thanks. I use to by that same bacon for $8.00. I am not kidding. OMG!!! butter for $8.00 a lb? That is just stupid. I don't shop at Walmart, the closest one is about 60 miles away the other one is 100 miles. Gas is still $5.30 here so trips to town have to be a must. Ohhh that is so interesting about your grandma and the potatoes. I wish I had a cool basement. They are not built in here for the sand. Have a great evening.

    1. wal mart is not my first choice for food shopping, but that is the largest food store near me and it is about 40 minutes to get there one way. and they are cheaper then the smaller hometown grocery store. the prices are total craziness I was comparing prices and the wal mart brands of food were half the price of name brands so some how they are keeping their own brands the same old prices.
yes my grandma lived in an old farm house and she did have a deep underground cool basement-she had one small room down there that was her pantry for her home canned foods. we had an old basement before retirement up in northern Illinois where I stored my canned goods.

Shoot, I forgot about this food event/thought it´s also just on the first of the month!
    Hmmmm, this looks yummy!!
Yes. Food prices are crazy here, too. They blame the war in Ukraine, such nonesense!
We have a heat wave, finally, too.
I must say: I love it.... Hugs to the lake! And that cute girl!

  10. Lovely poem, beautifully illustrated! I've never been up early enough to see sunrise over the sea, but I've seen my fair share of sunsets on beaches in Maui. Always spectacular! But over very quickly.

  11. I am late to the party, and had not planned to join until I saw your poem and knew I had to. It's a beautiful painting to match the poem and goes SO well with the sun over the lake.

I'll gladly take the wild rice and mushrooms, but you can keep your pork. I didn't like pork even when I ate meat.

You found some good bargains. I can't find bargains at WalMart, I guess because Aldi is a block away from WalMart and across the street from Dillon's/Kroger. I shop exclusively at Aldi, but I actually went yesterday because Scott lives too far away now to shop every week for me. I was shocked at the price of eggs and bananas. One good thing was a pineapple for $1.69, which I thought was reasonable. Bananas are $0.10/lb more expensive than six months ago. I can't begin to imagine how much hamburger must cost now. Even veggies are through the roof.

What really worries me is my electric bill. With temps averaging 107F and 108 F for days on end, I can't afford to run my whole house AC, so I live in my office, where the small AC I installed to keep my electronics cool, is working overtime. If only congress would get off their duff and pass the energy conservation act, we might see lower fuel (electric) bills.

    Have a super TADD, dear.

    1. you are not late to the party at all Elizabeth, it starts on thursday but Rain posts early on wednesday and I always post early too.
yes this heat is not stop here too, so we are pretty much stuck in the house. I walk up the steps and then up the hill to check the mailbox and that's about it for during most of the day. to conserve water I only water my perennials every other day. this heat has killed off my impatients-sad to say.
I wish we had an aldi here I loved that store. they are building one now here at the lake but it is over an hour drive from me so won't be going.
      enjoy your day

  14. It's true, there isn't anything more beautiful than a sunrise or sunset at the Sea and you captured the beauty in your painting. I chuckled when I saw you taking pictures in your kitchen ... like you, I found myself reaching for my camera when cooking something as simple as a poached egg on whole grain toast ... really? Not impressive so I didn't include it. I hear you about the prices ... very scary when you are on a fixed income. I feel like some prices are responding to the supply and demand issues brought about by the pandemic, but most are just greedy people jumping on the band wagon ... sad, isn't it? I'm looking forward to your churned ice cream next week. Haven't tried that yet, and my FH loves ice cream :) Stay cool Kathy ...

  15. Kathy your art and the poem are so lovely. I have experienced the sun rising over the water. This poem and your painting certainly capture the beauty of God's blessing of beauty. Oh your pork tenderloin looks fabulous. I have made it on the grill as well. It seems like pork really catches the flavor of the smoke and charcoal which makes it such a favorite of mine. Bet yours was so good. Stay cool. Hugs!

  16. $8 butter is ridiculous Kathy!!! I freeze my butter too. And I'm very grateful to have a Costco within a reasonable drive (90 minutes away)...I do monthly shopping so it's worth it for me. The rice and mushrooms look delish!!! And that poem is so lovely, and isn't true, an ocean sunrise is so beautiful! I think your burst of yellow sunshine is wonderful! Oh gosh ink spill! Been there lol...after you work on a piece and you love it, then something happens it's SO disappointing! I was filming a video for the art channel yesterday and my silly phone decided to shut down about 10 minutes into filming (I film with my phone's camera)...little did I know, I was chattering on and drawing lol...no footage and I only figured that out after I finished!!!

    1. Hi Rain this comment just now popped in. Yes I had to look at that twice to see if it was really 8.00 a pound and this was at a wal mart store. the wal mart brand was much less. I have never lived near a costco and I know many like that store. I do allot of online shopping at sams club, amazon, nuts.com, and vitacost for foods (not fresh) with free shipping
thanks I really liked this wild rice and mushroom dish allot.
oh bummer about your tutorial video that would be a disappointment for sure. I will remember next time to set the piece aside first-away from splatters the ink has never done that before when I was refilling.
