Staying Cool?

How are you all staying cool??

I never had air conditioning in the house until we moved down to Missouri for our retirement years. In this area it is a must, especially for health conditions. We usually have high humidity along with the heat.

We were mid 80's F before 8 am already this morning. I set up the garden hose so I could water the perennials early mornings or early evenings after the sun goes down a bit. I may need to water twice.

I started on a deep clean of our home this morning-we have vintage wood pieces so a good time to get out the Liquid Gold wood cleaner.

I was really stuck in the house over the bitter cold winter, and now summer begins with severe heat and humidity-that's Mother Nature for ya-Smiles.

Thinking of cool foods for summer -what are your favorites??

Here is a link to lots of summer cold salads

How about ice cream?

A few years ago I bought a ice cream cone maker-to make me a gluten free ice cream cone-have not tried that yet-not sure why now. I think that goes on my to do list this summer.

Please stay hydrated and cool during these extreme hot temperatures

 Hugs from the Ozarks

  1. Hi Kathy, such a wonderful post! The photos are lovely! I drink plenty of water, first and foremost. I love watermelon, cucumbers and iced tea as well. I stay away from ice cream but I sometimes will purchase the fruit on a stick. Rare, though. I lay low and don't do too much physical work in the heat. Yes, I do have an air conditioner, but it isn't central air conditioning, so I do what I really need to do...cook, basic cleaning, etc., but washing floors, etc., waits until it is more comfortable.
I do love salads. I make my own dressing with either extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil, lemon or lime juice and salt and pepper. That's it! The bottled dressings are too rich and heavy in fat so I prefer making my own.

    1. Hi I have been working on drinking more water, I am not good with that. I just bought a case of icelandic water suppose to be a better ph-it tastes really good.
I love fresh fruits and veggies too-difficult to get good quality where we live now though. I am using to growing a lot of our own food over the years and preserving it I love your dressing-I agree I buy very little prepared foods like that-if one reads the label of ingredients-no thank you-smiles-stay cool

  2. The only air conditioning we have is in the bedroom so tonight that is where I am I have had enough heat for one day and even more for tomorrow.
I do get out in the winter and I will be glad when this heat breaks I am supposed to hike on Friday.

  3. We had both ice cream and watermelon tonight. Those salads look yummy. It was 84 when I went to work this morning at 5:30am. It was 100 when I got in my car to go home and 93 when I got home. Not loving this Summertime heat either. I fill the birdbath as soon as I get home and water my flowers too. Janice

  4. We actually had a pretty cool and wet Spring and early Summer here in Texas... for Texas i guess i should say... We are no HOT... 95-97 most days now , getting down in the low 70's at night... That night time temp is so important... if we can at least get in the low 70's to start the morning out it makes it bareable... but at some point this Summer we will not get below 80... We can have high humidity especially if we've had rain but usually its a dry heat which is much more bearable than what you have... You stay cool too my friend.... Its been a pretty uneventful Birthday.. just trying not to get what Alvin has... i've mostly succeeded... I might be tired just taking care of him... lol and a bout of queasiness every once in a while.. fingers crossed... Hugs! deb

    1. So sorryI forgot about your birthday I need to make a birthday list for next year I like to mail out cards to my slow mail friends.
we are getting down to the mid 70's at night here too-that makes a big difference for the day temps. we have had a summer with no rain and in the 100's almost every day one summer when we first moved down to Missouri-that was brutal and no rain the entire summer.
Yes the humidity makes it unhealthy to work outdoors for seniors for sure.
I am hoping you do not get the bug Alvin got-that would be awful. It is difficult taking care of our loved ones and taking care of ourselves. It has been a year and a half now and it takes a toll-I have been ill since around January. I am following a new book's diet now that am hoping will help long trerm.
      hugs

    1. It does, I agree thank goodness for AC I never had it growing up at home, and when I got married over 40 years ago we didn't have it either til we retired-it can be expensive but it would be awful without it.
      stay cool-hugs

  6. Watermelon and ice cream are favorites of mine. Some of those salads look good, especially the Greek and Caprese salads. Others sounded OK, but many required cooking and I'm not going to turn my stove on in this heat.
