Happy Mid Week
Yesterday I broke down and turned on the heat-the house was just too cool even with a thick sweatshirt on. Still no frost or freeze though which is very unusual for this area.
Monday one of our workers came out to work on some house projects. He is also a mechanic so when he checked out my car he discovered the auto shop forgot to hook up something in the engine-Haven't driven it yet-will soon for a big food shopping day.
This week I baked up pumpkin breads. Monday with wheat flour and yesterday my gluten free pumpkin bread. Here is a link to a past post with photos and the recipe This is my go to recipe now-it uses coconut sugar and maple syrup and I used light olive oil instead of the coconut oil this time. I also found canned organic canned pumpkin puree-which has sooo much more flavor than the usual can found in the stores. I gave away a half loaf o our worker-friend, kept out a half a loaf for each of us and froze the rest-stays fresher that way
I guess this month is my month to buy a few hardcover books. I don't buy cookbooks much anymore. I love to read them-like a book though. Before we moved to the lake house I donated a couple hundred cookbooks to the local library for their big book sale. I sold a few as well. Now I try not to buy more-however this one intrigued me
It had come up in one of the booklists I get in my email. They have a new edition 2025 that was pretty expensive-but looking around I found a copy on Ebay that was the original edition several years ago. It is a large book-gorgeous photos-lots of history and the recipes looked good.
For as long as I can remember we have gotten their catalog in the mail around thanksgiving time for Christmas shopping. I have purchased different items through the years. The original owners still own the business. I am enjoying reading about their history. Any of you that live or have visited the east coast have you visited their store?
I also wanted to thank my wonderful slow mail friends for the birthday cards and letters you sent me-It makes my day-hugs
Found this photo online Happy Wednesday
Yes it is getting colder. Love the lat photo -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeletethank you
DeleteOhhh that has happened to us with the car. Luckily Mr. M. caught it. Your pumpkin bread sounds amazing. I will check out the recipe. We have had to turn the heat on a few days too. I should have it on now but I'm trying to keep my bills as low as possible. That cook book looks like a good one. Have a very nice day today.
ReplyDeleteI love pumpkin bread so a nice treat. I was trying not to pay for heat yet either-have a good day
DeleteI thought I was going to have to turn on the heat this morning, but latching a couple of windows seemed to make enough of a difference. My favorite times of the year are when I can have the windows open, and thanks to the heat that refused to leave I feel like I've been cheated out of some of it.
ReplyDeletei agree we did no have much of a spring or even a fall-just mostly summer time weather-better than winter though-hugs
DeleteYes, I have been to that store. It is pretty large and fun seeing all the vintage remakes they have. There is a Vermont cook you should follow Gesine Bullock- Prado. She has wonderful bakes. She is Sandra Bullock's sister. I have a couple of her cookbooks.
ReplyDeletestay warm
Cathy
Good afternoon I was hoping my friends on the east coast may have been to the store. Thanks for the cook referral I checked-she does have lots of cookbooks I liked her 5 seasons book-the recipes sounded good I will check if she has a you tube channel
Deleteoops all seasons6 seasons I didn't find a you tube channel for her though. I don't buy baking books any more-because I have to change up to healthier ingredients and also gluten free for me
DeleteI still get emails from The Vermont Country Store. I dont know if they do catalogs anymore. We turned our heat on a few weeks ago, but it has not turned on all those days. Pumpkin bread or anything pumpkin I am ready for now. Janice
ReplyDeleteI get a catalogue every year in november sometime. l Love pumpkin recipes top
DeleteYes, it is getting cooler here in the UK too.
ReplyDeleteI always think October is pumpkin month!
So many lovely recipes to try ...
All the best Jan
I love pumpkin recipes too I scan pinterest for ideas
DeleteI love to read cookbooks too, and even though I donated many, and my collection still seems like its too big. I have this cookbook. It's great, and it has lots of New England recipes. Thanks for reminding me about it Kathy. I need to pull mine out. Hope it warms up for you, but when its cold, sometimes a little bit of heat is exactly what you need to take off the chill. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteGood morning especially at my age now I try not to buy too many hardcover books-but I am really enjoying reading the history in this one. It is warming up during the days this week-low 50's or '60's I love it more rain coming int
DeleteHappy mid week
I've been to Vermont a few times, a long time ago though and I don't remember visiting that store, but it looks so cozy! I hope your car keeps it together for your shopping trip Kathy! ♥
ReplyDeleteme too hugs
DeleteI turned on my heating a long time ago, but not in all rooms... yet we don't use much because our house is very well insulated.
ReplyDeleteMake it nice and warm in the car on your shopping trip...
Thank you so much for the tip about the pumpkin bread, dear Kathy.
I have all the ingredients and can start right away... I'll use my sourdough starter... it will be great. I've never baked pumpkin bread before.
Your cookbook looks great... those wonderful old shops... simply beautiful.
Best wishes. I wish you all the best and send you a hug.
Viola
Good morning-let us know how your pumpkin break turns out with added sourdough. we have full house heat here hugs
Delete... " forgot to hook up something"?!!! Please never go there again.... what luck that guy had a look!
ReplyDeleteNice he was rewarded with self baked bread!
A cookbook with history sounds great. I still wait for the Air Fryer-cookbook I ordered in February...
Weeee. In my calendar it says your Birthday is but tomorrow?! Here we say it brings bad luck to give congrats in advance, so... please clarify... Hugs to you and the lake...
Man... I once called Ingo on his Birthday cause my internet didn´t work. Thought, now, what´s wrong with him, he´s so grumpy.... Hups! (That was when I still studied in another town)
I can not believe that auto shop did that either-not like them and unacceptable. He loved the bread so I gave him half a loaf.
DeleteYep the 24th is my birthday will be 76 Larry and I are 4 years apart.
Hugs back
Then glad I waited: Happy, happy Birthday, dear Kathy, to a new year in your life, may it be great - not too much trouble at the lake and weeeee, just a good one, big hugs!
Deletethanks so much hugs back
DeleteWe had our first (and second, and third) fire this week. Fall has definitely arrived!
ReplyDeleteOh No that's scary stay safe
DeleteSitting here having an early for me cup of coffee... I'm more of a night owl... than an early bird... lol Was looking forward to sleeping in a little this morning but daughter had car trouble! tire trouble really .. Last week the trouble was our truck.. the battery went out ... wouldn't even charge enough to get us to the auto shop so daughter saved us ... Its been a week or so of car trouble.. Lo and behold the battery was under warranty! So great one of your workers figured out your car .. or i hope he did... you might take it on a test run before you fill it with groceries! :) I own some cookbooks but if truth be told i never use them... often tempted to just get rid of them.. give me more cabinet space.. I have one my mother in laws church made with member's recipes and has some of his mom's in there... keep that one... but seriously i might get rid of the old and get something new that i might use.. right!? Still hot here..90F today... but relief is coming... and maybe some rain tomorrow night.. fingers crossed... Pumpkin bread sounds so good ... i haven't made any in years... Sometimes i have trouble getting the centers done... I've read though that , that can happen if you over mix?? Hubby doesn't like pumpkin anything... but he'll eat pumpkin bread...lol I hope your Birthday card gets to you in time... If not , Have a wonderful Birthday kathy! Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteGood morning, I did a huge food shopping trip and the car seemed good. the post office lady carrier helped me bring down some of my bags when she was bringing down packages-that was nice of her.
Deletethe small wal mart here has very limited choices of frozen veggies for some reason so their fresh looked really good so will be freezing lots of veggies today.
I look up recipes online mostly now if I am looking for something different, but the cookbooks I have kept I will keep for now. I am really enjoying this new one. but if you are not using them time to pass them on.
seems car troubles come all at once sometimes-ugh
wow can't believe you are still in the 90's we have a lot of rain coming in again starting today.
same as Larry he likes the pumpkin bread but won't eat pumpkin pie he only wants sweet potato pie haha they taste the same to me but I bake it for thanksgiving for us. I found a can of organic sweet potato that is really good.
thank you for bday wishes your card may just be in my mailbox today hugs
I get recipes online too... hmmm maybe i don't even need a cookbook...lol We got 2 inches of rain and MUCH cooler temps... Alot of Monarchs going through.. .. they are a little late this year.. Your card was a little thick but i didn't take it to the post office to have it weighed, just mailed it from the house... stuck an extra stamp on it to be sure so fingers crossed it makes it... You know me i get long winded when writing letters...lol Hugs! deb
DeleteGood morning I thought your letter would have come in yesterday-saturday-but sadly no will let you know. we were supposed to get a lot of rain over th weekend but sadly just a few sprinkles
DeleteSure hope i put enough postage on it... grrr... that'll teach me to just take it to the post office instead of guessing... sigh... I didn't get Halloween cards mailed out this year... another sigh... BUT i did get your card! It landed in the neighbors mailbox and they delivered it to me!! Woot woot! Thank you so much! You have such a nice collection of stamps! Hugs! deb
DeleteKathy your pumpkin bread sounds so good. I make it for me...need to try your gluten free version for hubby. I know we have had just a light frost thus far...highly unusual for us as well. Your cook book would have me turning the pages. They were something I used to collect many years ago but have sorted and gave a way quite a few these past years...there is always Pinterest :) - saves me a bit of cupboard space. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteGood morning-that is an excellent recipe for pumpkin bread it uses coconut sugar and maple syrup and I have found an organic can of sweet potato which is really good-or I have made it with fresh sweet potatoes too-just boil or bake them - peel-and blend them into a puree
DeleteYes if find lots of recipes on pinterest too hugs
I have FAR too many cookbooks and I don't use them all that but every time I try to purge them, I hit a wall. I can't let them go! Your new one looks good.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved my cookbooks too-but when we moved to the lake I just needed to let most of them go-I really did have over 100 cookbooks. I was able to sell a few and the rest I gave to the library. this new one is a good read and the recipes look good too
DeleteHi Kathy, I am enjoying the cooler temperatures. 😎 After the intense heat and humidity 😫 and wildfires 🔥 this summer, it is great to have fresh air and to get out more, appreciating Autumn 🍂 colours. Take good care of yourself.
ReplyDeleteSo happy to read you have cooler weather too-feels so good here too we ha have rain coming in hugs
