Even though I am retired and mostly don't venture out much any more these days-this week went by fast for me and it's Friday already. For the most part this was a quieter Labor Day weekend than past years. No fireworks from neighbors, one neighbor did not come in to spend the holiday and the other neighbor worked on outdoor projects and left on Sunday. A couple busy days with lots of boats-but not bad really. Biggest thing-cooler and more pleasant weather-finally
I got bad news from my safety inspection for my 1999 Mountaineer They have to re do something in my front tires-no longer safe. Larry called it a front end. This car has been perfect for me-we bought it used with very little mileage from a friend. It has gone on several long road trips over this time that I have driven it. The issue now is finding a neighbor that can help me get back home after I drop it off. I would just stay there and read my kindle-but the shop is soooo busy and they might not get me in at the 8 am appt and it is a 4-6 hour job. I need to call the one neighbor that helped me with my shattered back window. I just dislike asking for help as I can't usually return the favor-now especially.
Still no significant rain here, we got a few sprinkles the other day but not a soaking rain like we really need. Predicted to rain this afternoon so we'll see if we get it.
Since I brought up the case with Ebay about the poor instructions and very high shipping-I got my money back on that this morning. The seller was supposed to send me a label to return it which he never did. I did yesterday put it into a smaller envelope and mail it back to him. I also refused the package with the needle and was able to do that by writing "refused mail to sender" I checked with the post office and you can still do this as long as you don't open the package. I did this on my own without contacting Ebay for help so am hoping he does the right thing and refunds my money on this. Ebay refunded the money on the instructions since he was not being cooperative. Too much drama haha I very rarely have any problems shopping online though.
Have been doing a lot of reading online and watching videos about the process for this Amish toothbrush rug and some things are not clear in my head still. I looked online and found a vintage pattern for this rug-many are too high priced but I found a seller that was reasonable. One needs to know how to increase the stitches as the rug gets larger so I think this pattern should make this more clear. This was a popular craft brand back in the 1980"s
I did find a group on Facebook that is based on making crafts from recycled materials instead of buying all new. I found several making these rugs so I was able to ask some questions.
I have gotten a lot of cotton strips torn and steam pressed this week. Most do not press their strips, but I think it will be easier to work with and a nicer finish as well.
One needs a base strip that you tie the knots on to-and I didn't have a fabric for that in my stash. So reading online-many use poly-cotton broadcloth for stability. Not big on poly anything for fabric but I think this will be a good choice. I did find a seller that also sells supplies and she was selling 100% cotton broadcloth for rug making-cut on the bias and one very long roll in one piece. This was too expensive to me. Many buy sheets at the resale shops and make rugs with those-and they can be all cotton or not.
My grandparents farm in Indiana was located right in the middle of Amish country. My parents bought the property when they passed. I was quite surprised at the time that most of the clothing that the Amish wear is not cotton-it is all synthetic or broadcloth and wool for winter. My Mom and I used to shop at an Amish fabric store, so I had asked why and she said because the clothes dry faster on the line than cotton clothes. So if using older clothes or sheets for these rugs they would have had a lot of synthetic fibers in them, and the rugs would last longer too. Just my thinking.
Those of you that watch-are you ready for football? The KC Chiefs first seasonal game is tonight and in a different country. We can watch it for free online on You Tube.
I have been catching up on laundry here the last couple of days, cleaning a bit too. Oh and I wanted to share a new series I found on Magnolia Network-I like this channel so am happy it is included in our package. A Mom and daughter already own a Frank Lloyd Wright home but if I am understanding this right in one of the buildings on their property where he worked-- his last design was found after he passed. These two are going to build it. The whole reference to the home was a small tulip tree-now that tree is very large and not in good shape and is surrounded by other trees after all of these years---so they have decisions to make already. The first episode was last night. Here is a link about this show
Happy Friday and weekend
Good Morning Kathy!! I saw the Mahomes game on for tonight free on YouTube.. unfortunately for that i have a Granddaughter spending the night... so not sure if we will try to watch it... Maybe YouTube will leave the video up?? Glad your finding info about your rug... I think the GrandLittle and i (eldest) are going to make some bracelets in her school colors dark green /black and silver.. i bought some little bead footballs too... The highschool cheerleaders have been super nice to her as she cheerleads in the stands and she wants to make them bracelets... it should be fun BUT i have never known her to be THAT focused... If i get one bracelet out of her i'd count it lucky...lol
ReplyDeleteI lived near Amish country for alot of my childhood up in PA.... We used to visit a few places and shop... I MISS Shoefly Pie.... OMG..... basically a molasses crumb pie.... to die for... We traveled back east many years ago to visit family and i got one... I was nice enough to share it with hubby and he liked it to.. All my life with him he made fun of it because of the molasses... said it was horse feed...yeah well he liked it...lol
Take care Kathy! Hope you get some rain.. We are expecting some with a cold front this weekend... Even something about Huricane Lorena leftovers coming this way?? Anyhow barely make 80 tomorrow.. i'll take it! Hugs! deb
Good morning, making the bracelets with your granddaughter sounds like a fun project-hopefully she will love it enough to stay focused. There was another Amish community in Indiana-Shipshewana-The had a to die for family restaurant-served family style-I love molasses but I don't think I ever had a shoofly pie-but I never ate much desserts-still don't. good memories-hugs
DeleteI hope you get the rain too-I am hoping the game will stay up too-we have streaming on the iv so I watch you tube videos on there-bigger screen. glad you are getting a cool down too-hugs
lots of news! Enjoy your weekend.
ReplyDeletethanks you too-sorry this post ended up a bit long
DeleteUgh on the car issues. Cant live without a car though. Hope you are able to get it fixed soon. Very windy here today. So windy we lost our internet service for a bit. Janice
ReplyDeleteTomorrow-wednesday morning I take it in to get fixed-living rural one has to have a vehicle for sure. no wind here and no rain either sigh happy new week
DeleteMaybe your could cook or bake something for your neighbor as a thank you for driving you?
ReplyDeletethanks Last time she helped me I gave her a homemade pecan pie-so I will come up with something again for her-
DeleteHi Kathy. I know what you mean about asking people for help. I don't really know my neighbors super well, and if it wasn't for my husband and my daughter I don't know who'd I'd ask. I suppose I could ask friends but we kind of live out of the way. The Frank Lloyd Wright house show sounds interesting. WE don't have Magnolia Network, but some of the shows come on HBO/Max which we stream. I hope you have a super weekend and get your rug questions answered by the pattern. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteI was able to reach her yesterday-she always so friendly and upbeat-I caught her just in time-she just got back and she is leaving again the next day after my car is supposed to be done. she is very active in her church.
DeleteI really like Magnolia network especially in the fall and winter months they have some good programs hoping you can find it happy weekend
Oh ugh. Who needs car issues! Sorry to hear that. But good news on the ebay thing. Sometimes sticky wheel gets the grease -- or refund!
ReplyDeleteyep-hugs
DeleteDear Kathy, I hope everything is going well with your car, because it's so important when you're in a remote area without easy access to trains or buses.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed.
I saw this rug recently in the quilting workshop. However, we had so many themes that I forgot to ask about it... it must be a fascinating technique to sew...
I hope you get the materials you need just the way you like it.
Best wishes from Viola
Good afternoon Viola, I thought this rug looked like a fun project-originally one would cut up old sheets or clothes to make these rugs. I did need to buy the base fabric-what you put the knots on to. I forgot that this poly cotton will not tear so it is much more time consuming to mark and cut with scissors my rotary cutters are no longer sharp enough to cut this poly-cotton so very time consuming for sure. Oh well if I decide to do more rugs I will go to back to all cotton.
Deleteyes living rural must have dependable transportation. Larry's newer suburban is just to big for me to be comfortable driving it I did get in touch with my neighbor so I have a ride take care hugs
Sorry for car issues it is always frustrating. I will be interested in how you progress with the toothbrush rug.
ReplyDeleteCathy
thanks it is an older car that I haven't needed to do much to it-so things like this will happen. I am still tearing strips of cotton fabrics from the stash I pulled out for this-hoping to get two rugs. I am having trouble with poly cotton-can't tear it, scissors are not working out that great so ordered a pack of discs for my rotary cutter-the one I still have is super dull-that will make the job easier-I have 6 yards to cut into 1 1/2" strips
DeleteGood and bad news in this post, Kathy, and hope the car repairs go well and great that your neighbor can help with the transport. As others have already suggested, giving something homemade is a good repayment, maybe once she returns home again. Good for you in getting that refund, thankfully I have never had a similar online issue aside from returns to Amazon for various reasons. The start of football season does nothing for me as I have never watched any games. Hope your favorite KC team does well this year.
ReplyDeleteGood morning thanks My most favorite team from the late "60's is the Green Bay Packers-no mater where I live they are always my main team-they have an excellent quarterback that got hurt last year-so I am hoping they make the playoffs. KC played horrible Mahomes the qb was trying to do everything-no he needs a team behind him.
DeleteI know too much information haha Larry doesn't watch any sports at all
Have a good week
