Wood Ducks, Gardening and Spinning for T

I was not going to hook up with T 'til the 10th anniversary, but since I am caught up a bit with outdoor work for now and  that we are back to the high 90's F  again I will have time to visit.

We had a few days of much cooler weather-finally-but still not a drop of rain. The grass is all burnt up here except for what splashes on from the lake.  Good thing though is no mowing for me smiles.

Find link up for T with Bleubeard and Elizabeth in my side panel, you are welcome to join in just post a drink related photo.

Today and Yesterday, I raked out the smaller stones and added 8 large bags of garden soil to part of the area. I will need to add more for sure but at least I got these bags on the ground. I collect my zinnia, marigold, and other seeds so I spread a bunch over this area-to keep weeds from growing and the butterflies will love the flowers too. It is way too hot, and with no rain, not a good idea to be transplanting perennials to this area right now.

By the front door are the steps to the top-and then to either side is the rock wall with a curved area on both sides. I have a bird bath on the other side, so I added this large metal leaf for drinking water to this left side that we are working on. The rock came from the woods property I am thinking this is a drink reference as the butterflies and little birds love this for a drink of water.

Larry has been scraping off the dead grass with his skid steer on the left side of this area-we will be placing landscape fabric and adding stone to that area very soon.

Doing that he found this large heart rock-so I brought it up to this corner area At the woods home, some of you may remember my rock shower project-sadly we never got to use that, but in the process of gathering rocks I found many many small and medium size heart rocks-never one this large-I love it.

The bags of soil were so heavy that I worked from both ends-ran out there in the middle-oh well, I need lots more soil before fall. I need Larry to decide about that hill in the back area-would need allot of garden soil added to level a bit. To the right is the pallet of brick for the outdoor cooking area.

We learned that our duck visitors are a family of wood ducks, that have been breeding in the area for many years-according to one of our neighbors. The hen discovered our bird seed early mornings and sometimes her youngsters come too. She had 6 survivors out of 10 or 12 little ones.

I am realizing I spin better with less processed wools. I have found a couple sellers on Etsy that I really love, including the Icelandic wool. I was inspired to search out this wool from Erika's Iceland trip, learning that many of the sheep are not penned in-love that.  It spins like a dream I love it, feel like I know what I am doing even haha. I had bought a variegated roving with black, white and dark grey.

  Ready to spin

This is very soft yarn, I am in love with this one-and ordered a little bit more of this one and the dark grey.

I am still spinning thick and thin but it is not over spun which is a good thing. I love the textures of that in weaving. I am still spinning singles opposed to a finer yarn that is then plied together with two or three-right now I don't need to strive for that as I am not a knitter or do crochet-weaving is more forgiving I think depending on the garment being made.

We have been enjoying root beer floats during these hot humid days. I shared one in my last post but I did make us another one last night.

I make them with my own homemade vanilla ice cream-yum summer for me is a root beer float.

This is a photo of me layering the ice cream and the root beer.

Happy T

  1. Root beer floats! They are as good as coffee frappes.
Great find on that heart shaped stone. I'd bring that one indoors for a special display.
    Male wood ducks are gorgeous.

  2. Root Beer floats are a classic that never go out of style. I haven't had one in ages but now I want one!
Your spun wool is lovely and looks so soft. What a work of art that not many people know how to do. If we ever go into survival mode, you will be one of the few that have clothes.
Your yard is always beautiful, and that heart rock was a great find.
    Happy Tea Day,

    1. I always buy this sugar free and cafeine free root beer to have on hand during the summer-I love these too-a great treat.
This Icelandic wool is very very soft I love the feel of this one. Larry and I could survive for sure in a primitive setting-although would be harder do to being seniors now.
I love the heart rock too. Happy Tea

  3. That heart shaped rock is beautiful. Are you going to do something special with it or will it just lie somewhere where is can be seen? I like the metal leaf as a birdbath, and since it's so shallow it's great for the butterflies as well. Spreading out soil in the garden is hard work - I seem to do that every year as well. It's good for the garden though. Happy T day!

    1. For now I like the heart rock where it is-it shows up nicely there and I will see it every day when I go to get the mail. like the shallow metal leaf too, perfect for the smaller birds and butterfies.
these bags were sooo heavy as they collected allot of moisture since I bought them. I originally bought them for in front of the lake area-but then we got into this project. happy T

Gardnes are having a real hard time and well it is just cold. LOL Love the spinning and I really love the color. Nice work with the dirt and the ducks are too cool. Have a nice evening.

    1. here we are super hot and humid with no rain, other areas are getting too much rain, and now you are colder-crazy summer for sure haha. although this area of Missouri I have learned does get a year like this once in awhile with no rain in the summer months.
I will need to get more garden soil for sure, the ducks are too fun. I usually make sure I have root beer and ice cream around for the summer-

  6. Your garden work is looking great Kathy. I like your birdbath and that big metal leaf too. And when I first looked at your box of Icelandic wool to spin I thought it was a box of human hair. Smile. Once I looked closely I could tell what it was. I was reading about Icelandic wool and how it gets softer the more it is washed. I think when I finish my sweater I will wash it and see. Of course I will lay it flat to dry. Have a great T day and stay cool. hugs-Erika

  8. Those big bags of garden soil are so heavy! I can’t imagine unloading 8 bags! I do love the large heart rock, and especially that Larry gave it to you. I follow Bernadette Banner on YouTube. Lately she has been learning to spin yarn on an old spinning wheel. You might enjoy looking her up. Hope you get some of the rain that’s moving southward. Take care and enjoy those root beer floats. 1. I couldn't believe how heavy these were-I think they are around 50 pounds and then they had gathered allot of moisture it was a struggle for me to get them into the skid steer bucket. I may need to consider buying the smaller bags next time. This heart rock was a special find and that it was so large too love it.
I will check her out for spinning-back when I bought my Ashford wheel and put it together as a kit there was no internet or videos to learn from-they are so helpful.
I am so hoping for rain tooanother high 90 degree plus day today-Ithink that calls for another root beer float-hugs

And ohhh, I love your drink-reference!
To heart-rocks. There is also a The Simpsons-episode on this. Wonderful find.
I am really looking forward to what will become of all the spinned wool!
And I promise, if or when I make to America: Root beer it will be!!!
Is that the thing Petrocelli always drank, do you know that series? I LOVE it.
I´m wishing you rain - have a nice T-day at your lake, hugs

    1. I am not familiar with that show, and I haven't seen a simpson show in years-used to be one of Larry's favorites. Is there no root beer there in Germany? Thank you I am so hoping for rain this week. I know I want to make a wrap of some sort like a rauna or poncho type garment, I do have allot of yarn spun up most of it pretty bulky-might weave into some nice warm scarves. Happy T day and new week hugs back

    2. Once again you have been working like a world champion, well done at all you manage. And I love that heart stone. Glad you enjoyed your root beer float, you deserved it after all that work! I have a friend here who loves root beer, so when he visits I order some from Amazon. And sometimes they have it at Aldi when they do an American week. Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie

    3. Good morning Valerie, I was just wondering if Germany sold root beer or not. I sure miss the aldi store when we lived at the woods home, I shopped there allot. They built a new store in the lake area but it is over an hour drive away each way sadly.
handling those heavy soil bags was a bit much but we got it done-now I need to find more haha. Happy T

  11. The leaf water feature is so pretty and a cool find with the heart shaped rock. Loved the picture of the Mama Duck and her brood. It's been hot and humid for the past week or so. A root beer float would be the perfect drink for a cool down. Happy T Day

  12. I am SO glad you joined us for T this week, Kathy. I don't have to write to let you know about the rules for the 10th anniversary.

You have been busy. VERY busy. You got a lot of soil down and I am sure once the heat breaks a bit, you will be ready to tackle to last of it. I LOVE that heart rock. I've only found one in my life. I also really LOVE that lovely butterfly watering dish.

That is beautiful Icelandic roving. It makes lovely yarn, that's for sure.

I also LOVE root beer floats. I even hope to have one for T next week, if I get some ice cream. Thanks for sharing your gardening, your lovely new yarn, and your root beer float with us for T this Tuesday, dear Kathy.

  13. Hi Elizabeth, we have not had much of a break for this heat-it was cooler during the 4th but we never got any rain. at 9 am it is already feeling super hot out there.
I am in love with the Icelandic wool I may weave scarves with this one-would make nice gifts.
I need to check if wal mart got any more of this soil in I bought it at half price and got the last of it so they may not have restocked. its a long drive to a lowes for more.
I really love root beer floats too I may need to have on later tonight-smiles
    Happy T hugs

  14. I enjoyed catching up with your activities. The ducks must be fun to watch ans Mama leads her brood along the way. I got stuck for a minute at your pictures of the yarn you are spinning. I am a knitter and that looks lucious. I spent a moment imagining what I might make with it. Wonderful that you can create something from roving to finish.

    1. Hi these wood ducks are very fun to watch being so dry here with no rain they are liking the bird seed.
this is really lovely yarn very soft too I am hoping to get more weaving in going forward I have kitchen towels that need to get woven off-after I fix a threading error that was in the pattern-frustrating for sure. Happy T

  15. That is lovely icelandic wool! What a shame you are not a knitter. It would be great to knit an Icelandic sweater.
Love the heart shaped stone. What a find!
Your garden is going to look really nice. Keep dumping soil there. One day you'll have a lovely garden.
Root beer floats.I have no idea what that might be (as we don't have root beer) But it sounds really nice. I must endeavor to get some ice cream. It's difficult as it is so hot. Even with a freezer bag, the ice cream is likely to melt before I get home. We're having 40 degrees plus at the moment. (104 F). Very hot.
    Happy T-Day,
    Hugs,
    Lisca

  16. a root beer float is root beer and ice cream-layered in a tall grass. you could us another coke type beverage with ice cream that you like too. the ice cream melts in and makes it nice and creamy.
My Mom knit allot of beautiful sweaters and other items I tried and I just didn't get it haha weaving I took to right away.
I love the large heart rock too. yep this will take allot of added soil-will just keep adding it. you are really hot too. Have you tried making your own ice cream? They have really nice ones now that don't need the salt and ice-the container is kept in the freezer and you just add it to the machine and plug it in.
we are headed back up to the 100's F soon too- this is just going to be a very hot and dry summer here oh well more time for crafts haha Happy T

    1. yes I think a coke float would be good too we just have these during hot summers for a treat. yes this area was quite the mess-getting rid of the two over grown bushes is a huge plus for this area. it will take time especially since we are in a major heat wave this summer Happy T hugs

  20. Good morning, dear Kathy, it's great that thanks to technology today we can communicate directly over such great distances... because it's already evening :-) It's 8:30 p.m. for me.
I also have a lot of marigolds in the garden and a lot of flowers for bees and other winged animals... we've had heat since the weekend and I've put two bird baths in the garden. So far this year we've had fantastic weather, lots of rain and lots of sun... nature thanks us.
    The heart stone is great.
Your spun wool is great, I love it.
I've knitted a lot with Icelandic wool - Let loppi - gloves, sweaters, dresses... this yarn is very warm.
I love weaving, I have a tablecloth and runner that I woven myself... in a course with a large handloom... lovely :-))) Looking forward to your weaving.
Have fun... and good luck in the garden.
