Earth Day-Recycle Coffee Grounds

For my Earth Day post this year where I like to search out different ways to repurpose or recycle things-I chose coffee grounds. (Earth Day is this coming Monday)

Many of us brew coffee at home, so I wanted to research ways to repurpose the coffee grounds.

When I lived on land for gardening, I would add the grounds to my compost pile or work into the soil.

If you are able to compost and garden then coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen and the worms love them too in your compost or garden soil..

I found all sorts of ideas to repurpose here  for inside your home and outside your home and family fun ideas  A few more ideas here  I think this article was the best-all sorts of ideas for using coffee grounds

I even found a post about making candles with coffee grounds and old candles here

and to close I found a recipe for brownies using coffee grounds here

Earth Day

Today is the official day to celebrate Earth Day

Here is a link the official site for Earth Day

I personally have mixed emotions-I believe in taking care of our planet, recycling, making good choices, there are many small things we can do to not waste-less paper-plastic plates, less paper towels, washable straws etc.

I follow Free the Ocean-every morning They send me a quiz about the oceans-which helps them to raise money from sponsors to rid our oceans of plastics when we answer the questions. I learn allot of new things from the morning quiz too. They also sell sustainable products-I buy a few when they have their 25% off sales-otherwise they are a bit expensive for me. I do like their laundry soap that is in a sheet and then dissolves in the wash.

I have always thought instead of plastics especially in the food and medical sectors companies need to invent something that works like these plastics but will decompose-I have always thought that is just common sense solutions to the explosive use of plastics.  I did read that Mcdonalds Happy Meals will be phasing out their all plastic toys to something more sustainable and will decompose-that is a huge save of plastics.

I personally do Not believe in those wind generators though-they are an eye sore to the land and kill many birds. I also do not believe in the push to get rid of clean coal and clean gas, All electric everything is Not the answer (especially since most of the components come from China only or the rain forests-what sense does that make??)  It's a balance and common sense of policies-which our country and the world is lacking at the moment.

I was brought up in the hippie generation-so getting rid of plastics has been around a very long time.

These are my personal views You are most welcome to your own views too

                                   A few recycling ideas

I found this board on Pinterest that is full of recycling and re use of things

25 recycled ideas for your home here  these were interesting  I remember doing this one as a kid reusing food cans-perfect for the art-craft room without buying something, or storage uses in the garage or tool shed-great for nuts and bolts etc..

Here is another DIY recycling site with fun ideas

T Stands for Tuesday-Recycling Water Bottles for Earth Day

Hi Everyone,  It is time once again to join together for T over at our hostess Bleubeard and Elizabeth. Just share a drink related photo in your post to join us-link in my sidebar.

Hope everyone had a nice Holiday weekend. Saturday I received surprises in my mail box. A handmade card from our Elizabeth-thank your so much. I love these rocking bunnies, a card from a nearby friend, and a little Easter from my new slow mail friend Cathy that sent me local maple syrup treats. Thank you so much for thinking of me

I spent most of the weekend, especially Sunday, re organizing and cleaning up my very full craft room. It really is a happy spot in the house for me-when the clutter is in control. This is a small room compared to my space I had at our woods home. You can take a look here

Since Earth Day is coming up Friday of this week, I thought I would share links for recycling water bottles into something useful.

Water Bottles are really an issue when it comes to the mountains of plastic they produce, and so many end up in our oceans and waters. This is one item in particular I wish manufacturers would research how to make bottles that will decompose in our compost piles.  The world really does use too much plastic for so many things.

There are ways to reuse these plastics to expand their use. I have seen shows where people have tied them together to make floating islands out of recycled materials I found this video too

This link is for kids 56 plastic bottle craft ideas for kids   There is allot of fun and creative ideas in this post-here are a few photos from this site

How to build a greenhouse from bottles

House walls made from bottles

This was interesting-they used over 600,000 water bottles to change up the plastic and make into walls for this home

All of these bottles are my drink share, but I also enjoyed a couple of cups of Martha Washington's cocoa hulls one day last week.

It's been so dreary here with mostly rain, wind and cold but I did capture this pretty view early morning over the weekend

I put my hummingbird feeder out on the 15th and we had one visitor on the 16th and also one on the 17th. So the cute little hummers are arriving in the Ozarks.

Updated:   Oh and I have just reopened my Etsy shop and I have added a link in my sidebar.

When we moved to the lake I brought everything with me-well I always bring my craft room when ever I have moved since the late '60's smiles. It is time for a little de stash.  I am going through books now-I have lots of them. Books are difficult to sell, but I would rather try and find good homes for them by selling first before needing to donate them.  I just pulled a big stack that I will begin listing this week. These first books are of surface design on cloth-will be offering free shipping

Happy T Everyone

Happy Earth Day & a Book

  The 22nd is Earth day

Ever since my "hippie days" I have always worked at recycling, organic veggie gardening and putting up my own food, my arts and crafts, being kind to our planet-it's our home-everyone on the planet's home.

If you search your local area news and/or online there are many many events happening on this day.

I just finished reading the book Beyond The Ice Cream Cone by Pamela Vaccaro Someone on T probably about a year ago shared this book, I think it was Mae. Since this was about the World's Fair in St Louis, Missouri in 1904 I was intrigued and searched out the book.

I had heard about this fair but did not realize til reading the book that this was a world's fair. When I was a kid living at home my parents took us to the New York World's fair and also a world's fair in Canada. These are massive fairs and have so much to view-along with lots and lots of walking, and lots of new foods to try

I don't think there are worlds fairs any longer. This had me searching for the answer and this is what I found  The last world's fair in this area of the world was the one in Canada in the '80s  Looks like there are still world's fairs but they are totally different now, not like a "fair" and held in other countries.

This was a fascinating book, the author must have spent years researching as I don't think any aspect of the fair was left out. I hadn't realized the magnitude of all the temporary buildings that were put up. After reading the book I wanted to visit this fair-go back and time travel to enjoy it. On the back cover someone else thought the same "Reading this book made me regret that I was born 100 years too late. Pam's stories made me wish I had been at the fair in 1904"  I am wondering now if any of my ancestors visited this fair.

The author on several occasions in this book, wrote about Sarah Tyson Rorer who was a food expert of her time-I think she would have surpassed Martha Stewart of today with her knowledge.  In the beginning of the book the author mentioned her cookbook that she gave out as a souvenir Thinking--I wonder if there is a kindle version of this book--and there was for .99 cents-a very detailed book if you enjoy reading vintage books. Of course I found the original on sale at Ebay for around $100.00

If you enjoy reading about history, I did not get bored once reading this book-so fascinating.
