I checked yesterday and for sure I need to cut grass as soon as things dry out again. sigh not ready for that yet.

I wanted to share a beautiful spring card I received in the mail from Viola in Germany. This was her first handmade card and it is really lovely. Fabrics and stitches Thank you so much Viola-I love it!

Below is a close up

Happy (early) Spring
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com27tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-86372448151110752112024-03-13T19:40:00.000-05:002024-03-13T19:40:06.691-05:00Been Working Outdoors
Another beautiful day with no wind. We did get storms last night so the dirt pile I am moving with a bucket and a shovel was too wet today. Instead I grabbed some large bags and filled up 4 huge ones with leaves. The leaves were tucked in around the garage, vehicles and more. Lots more to do-I will burn these once they get dried.

I don't have a good way too compost these leaves living on small area of land with neighbors on both sides. I could keep them in their bags and let them decompose that way. I may do that and see what happens.

I did get a dozen of my bottle "greenhouses" planted yesterday, I posted photos on my Instagram page. I planted the two cottons, indigo, and two other dye plants for yellows and they are good for tea as well.

Any of you that have dyed with indigo fresh leaves? I did that at the woods house and got lovely results. Do any of you know if the fresh leaves can be dried for later use as a dye? I need to research that I am thinking. The other two plants for dye I just planted as seeds, I can dry for later dyeing.

I think my eyes are a bit better although still too blurry. I cut down on the number of drops the doctor said to do-as it was just too much for my eyes. With me and any medicines less is better.

Lovely sunrises this week.

Below is a bit before dark-grabbed the camera while I was moving soil down the steps.

Happy Mid-week
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-75781255627829065302024-03-09T11:25:00.006-06:002024-03-09T11:34:46.376-06:00Pretty Blooms from Amaryllis
This morning all 4 blooms have opened up on the amaryllis-soooo pretty

Adding photos to my blog is still "messed up" sadly I brought this one over by copy and paste.

We have bright sunshine today, strong winds so lots of waves on the lake. I was looking out towards the lake this morning and there was a flock of seagulls fishing. Usually they are on the far side away from me, but this time just past our dock-so very fun to watch them flying and diving for fish.

I got most of the wood wiped down yesterday in the main part of our living area. Just have the couch and dining table and benches to do yet, and a vintage trunk. Next up will be my computer room-ranch oak desk and several vintage cabinets and my weaving loom and bench. I think I will do the floors after that, and then tackle my kitchen-that's a big job but needs doing too.

I saved out 9 water gallon bottles to make into growing seeds. Will plant the cotton seeds first and then see what is in my seed stash. Not doing lots like I did last year. Next week the grass will need to be cut before it gets too tall.

Larry did allot of walking with his walker yesterday, today he feels ill- will probably sleep most of the day today. Adding it up the home health team was out to our home for 5 months, so thinking Medicare cut them off even though he really needs another month to tackle the steps and hill. We are thankful for their care during that time.

Happy weekend!
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com29tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-50176513565995727812024-03-08T09:58:00.007-06:002024-03-08T12:23:14.424-06:00Spring Has Arrived & Catch Up
Good Morning Friday,

I believe Spring has arrived here in the Ozarks. In previous years we have gotten late cold even a light frost end of April or early May-but for now we have Spring.

Almost 24 hours of rain yesterday-more to come- which has lots of greens popping all over the place-bushes, grass, perennials.

I did see Missouri is predicted to have a drought this summer, but that is ok with me-less grass cutting-smiles.

I am sticking with my decision not to buy any plants this year. I love certain petunias to fill up large containers, but those never make it after July here. I have lots of annual flower seeds, so will plant them instead. After this rain stops and things start to dry out, I will be out there working on things-soooo much to do too.

Taking care of Larry since late October, I have not been up to cleaning house-like a really good dusting etc, or even my crafts-but This week I have dug out the wood preserver, cleaning rags and started with our main living area for a deep clean. Had allot of dust everywhere which has probably added to my allergies. Once one gets started-Wow looks so good now-smiles.

We have mostly vintage wood pieces-never was into modern furniture. I inherited my Mom's ranch oak couch we had when I was a child. It desperately needs new custom cushions made. I had looked into that before we moved to the lake, and it was over $1000.00 back then. I really don't like making cushion covers-was never that good at it and the good foam is quite expensive, so that is main cost. So still just making do with that for now

Monday, I went to the new eye doctor, who is much closer than the one we were seeing since 2019- a surgeon for yearly checkups after our cataract surgeries. However, last year he informs me he no longer writes scripts for new glasses. -I really needed them last year too. When I found out my AT&T supplement insurance to Medicare was changing and would include dental and vision coverage, I decided to wait til this year.

Good news after meeting with the new doctor is that I am still on a watch for glaucoma-nothing has changed, however my eyes are not focusing properly. After all the different tests, doctor says my eyes are very very dry so I am using drops several times a day for two weeks and then another checkup. I started those on Monday but now my eyes feel a bit swollen and still not focusing on words etc very well. So will see what happens at my next visit.

Larry had his last in-home therapy yesterday. I am surprised by this, as Larry is now walking better with the walker, but still tires very fast. He also has not had any help on tackling the steep steps and hill to get out of our home and into a car. I guess we will need to figure that out ourselves. Our therapist did say if we wait a month, we can ask our primary doctor to contact them for more therapy. We have several must visits this month so will just take one day at a time.

Still having fun playing with buffalo fibers blended with Shetland wool and spinning. Can not seem to get into tying my large Yellowstone inspired quilt, so I am close to rolling that back up and putting away again til more inspired.

This week I did make a big pot of chili made with ground bison along with cast iron pan of cornbread-yum perfect for a rainy day.

This past week I also learned about an organization called Letters Against Isolation for those in nursing homes. Here is a link to their Instagram page and to their home page here I mailed out 7 letters to a nursing home in Montana this week-I think this will be rewarding for me and to the receivers.

Happy weekend

Bummer so difficult to add photos now sigh
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-57775317340486227412024-03-03T11:14:00.002-06:002024-03-03T11:14:17.047-06:00Buffalo Fiber Progress
Good morning Sunday (or Monday for my European friends) Today it's full sunshine and headed to the 80's F for a couple of days-then it will drop a bit for awhile but still spring temperatures. Of course this up and down is wrecking havoc with my sinus's.

Since Friday I have been playing with fibers. I started off with my blending board but did not like the results. This is a fun tool to layer fibers and them make into a long roving for spinning, but I forgot it doesn't really blend the fibers together. So I took apart what I had spun and redid it using my carders.

The buffalo fibers being extremely short made a mess of my board too. This is what was left behind-so I cleaned this up with a flicker tool and put this away.

This is a flicker and looks just like the one I have.

So getting out my carders-first I put too much fiber on, so since I am not a super good spinner, couldn't get the fibers drawn out enough to make a yarn that was not super bulky. So took that apart and put much less fiber on.-the shetland wool fiber first and then the bufflalo fibers. You can see that the buffalo fiber is just a "mat" of very very short fibers. I can see why it will be good in the soil.

It took a few trys but by late yestereday this was going fairly well. Spun up, this is a coarser fiber which I am thinking I could use my mini loom to weave table mats or perhaps coasters.

I am not happy that blogger has changed how to add photos to my blog. Shhhh I didn't tell Larry about this one-kinda crazy I know haha. Reminds me back when I was quilting more the girls would hide their fabric purchses from their husbands. I never hide stuff-but this purchase I did so far.

I got the 5 pound bag because it was such a better price point-especially since they had a good mark down on it, and then another 15% off on any order, plus free shipping. The free shipping was a big savings. I had been looking at this for a couple years now and the price was just too expensive before, and they have not offered free shipping before that I remember, so thinking they were spring cleaning their warehouse. .

I also bought another pair of their "Boss" short socks made with buffalo yarn-I had bought a pair a year ago and I love them These socks will last the rest of my life time for sure.-perhaps even the fiber smiles.

The first thing I did was to get this fiber out of the plastic bag, and then I grabbed old pillow cases from my craft room. Fibers need to breath-I never store any form of fibers or fabrics in plastic bags.

Well 5 pounds Is Allot of fiber-4 stuffed bags full haha. The fiber is very very clean which I am very happy about, and allot of it was in wide rolls. This is supposed to be the waste fiber and more coarse. It is actually not extremely coarse. The fibers are very very short which I had expected, but I almost think I will try carding it with another fiber to see if I can spin some of it. I also thought it might just make a nice stuffing for little pillows too. I will also use some of this fiber in the soil too this spring as I work on the perennial areas.

These photos came out a bit dark-sorry

I got to thinking this week while waiting for this to get delivered that 5 pounds is allot of fiber-Yes it is-- fibers do make me happy though and I need happy right now.

I have had in the back of my mine to create another framed fiber picture using wools and needle felting fibers-this will work for that project too, although that won't make much of a dent in this.

We got up into the 80's F temperature today but will crash to the low 20's tonight with wind rain t storms-typical for Missouri some years.

Late this afternoon I got outdoors for a bit. I spent hours seperating out the rocks from the soil-we needed the rocks to put on top of the sewer pipe. This is a slow project for me fill a big bucket half full with this soil and carry it down the steps- I did a couple hours of that-but good thing I stopped at 2 hours.

I did see a few daffodils beginning to bloom- that was a surprise I was not able to work in these areas before winter last year after Larry's fall-so I have much to do to get these areas sorted before they grow too much I am hoping what I planted last year will return this spring

The storms have just begun while I type this--Have a good rest of your week
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com24tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-25779245626649620752024-02-22T12:31:00.011-06:002024-02-27T08:25:46.280-06:00Spring Card Swap With Me?? Just did not have the energy for any of that, but it is coming back to me Smiles.

I am in the process of setting up papers to make a few spring cards for mailing off to friends. Larry is getting a bit better every week now. Looks like Medicare will probably only pay for in home physical therapy for three more weeks. Hoping they can extend that. One of the oversearer was out last week and said their goal is to get Larry walking up the steps at the end of three weeks. That would be awesome but I don't see that happening in that time frame at all. Larry tires out super fast now with his heart condtion so I really can't visualize that just yet-but will pray on it.

We did get a blast of winter over this weekend, ice first and then several inches of snow on top.(photos previous post) We still have low temperatures but with full sun I am surprised how much has melted off over the weekend. Saturday most of the hill was melted off.

For my drink share for T I grabbed one of my Yellowstone water bottles-that I love-and filled with water to use in the house. Makes me happy-smiles. I also wanted to try out a decaf freeze dried coffee that I found on Amazon. If I make up a pot of coffee for me it lasts over a week sometimes-so if I just want one cup I thought this sounded perfect. This coffee has excellent deep flavor-I love it. Not at all like just a instant coffee. My coffee cup is handmade pottery.

After I drank most of my coffee and I had more light for a nicer photo-I also grabbed apples from the refrigerator to make up an apple crisp.I made that Sunday morning with fresh blueberries

I wanted to share my vintage postcards, stickers amd ATC from Bleubeard and Elizabeth. The flowers will be red and white.

Sunday morning's sunrise was very very bright, so did not capture a good photo to share

Not sure anyone reading this will be nterested but I wanted to share a family owned company I love. They send out very interesting newsletters too that I have always learned something new.

The Buffalo Wool Company They process buffalo fibers, I love their socks-sooo warm and comfy.I try to support USA home business's when possible. I have been eyeing their buffalo fibers for soil amendment. for awhile now. It's rather expensive but their site has a big sale going along with free shipping when you spend a certain amount. Alot of items are sold out already. I bought another pair of their ankle size socks and I decided to buy some of this fiber to see how coarse it is and if it could be spun or not along with using it for gardening. When I searched online about adding fiber like this to soils everything was positive about it. Have any of you tried a fiber in your gardens?

I want to get the big plastic tubs we have that held food for ranchers that we still have at the woods home-up here to the lake. These are very large and perfect for growing things in. I have organic cotton seeds coming in the mail soon that I want to grow in these tubs along with flowers. Vegetables are difficult as the chipmunks and squirrels eat everything they find. It can get very hot here in this area of Missouri in the late summer months-so I think plants will do better in these tubs.

As I am writing this my apple-blueberry crisp just came out of the oven

I did make a couple batches of roll out sugar cookies wheat and gluten free-turned out really delicious-good thing a froze them in small bags haha

I shared photos on my Instagram page here

Happy T
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com36tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-1618420383695556192024-02-17T22:02:00.004-06:002024-02-17T22:02:32.872-06:00Interesating -sooo Sharing
I saw this on Facebook

kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-18217908315577367002024-02-16T17:57:00.003-06:002024-02-16T18:05:21.974-06:00Winter Arrived Today
We have been enjoying spring weather here, but today winter decided to blow back in.

Started with rain that turned to ice and then several inches of snow and cold with lots of wind too brrrr. Don't need to risk another fall. I was going to have a friend drive me over to pick up my car today but everything was ice this morning-so we do not need to get out on the roads. I did enough of that in my younger years in northern Illinois driving to work in winter.

Surprising there was actually a few boats on the lake this morning too.

I have gotten a few very thoughtful and lovely Valentine's cards in the mail this week-thank you so much for thinking of me-I love surprises in my mailbox. I also got Bleubeard and Elizabeth's T anniversary atc that I love, with special postcards-I will share hers next week Hugs to you all.

I only have one KC Chiefs sweatshirt that I bought a few years ago, and it was a vintage one-bummer though I was cleaning and splattered bleech on the front-what was I thinking??. I am still soooo bumbed about that.

I explored Etsy and found a shop here in Missouri that is screenprintig shirts-so I bought a sweatshirt that says back to back super bowls. I also looked for a friendship bead bracelet on Etsy in Chiefs colors-those seem to be super popular now, influenced by Taylor Swift. I found another Missouri shop that was making them at a very afforable price.

I probably have at least a dozen Green Bay Packers sweatshirts-some of them are at least 30 years old now or older, so I wanted one more KC Chiefs sweatshirt.to wear. This year I also found a vintage large and comfy Notre Dame college (South Bend Indiana) sweatshirt that I enjoy wearing.

Those of you that are seniors do you enjoy still wearing your teams colors?

I think tomorrow sounds like a perfect day to make an apple crisp in cast iron-have not made one in awhile. I even have some vanilla ice cream in the freezer too.

Happy Friday and Weekend!
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com23tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-52905380474073855522024-02-15T08:06:00.004-06:002024-02-15T08:06:54.438-06:00Prayers for Kansas City

I am thinking you have seen-heard the news by now. Just as the victory parade and celebration concluded shots were fired. One of the local news channels had a live feed beginning at 4:30 am The parade and events had concluded a bit before 2 in the afternoon. I had left the feed going on my computer and made us our lunch.

Kept hearing like the feed was still airing so checked and found out about the shooting. So sad that this would happen after a fun day for families.

One has died, 3 still very critical and children were targtetd as well.

Prayers for Kansas City and the families
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-76116991592389400952024-02-12T18:59:00.003-06:002024-02-12T18:59:33.843-06:00Raw Cotton Update
Remember the raw cotton I was gifted from a friend in North Carolina that lives near cotton fields? She knows I like to play with fibers so she had sent me some thinking I would like the seeds. She says one can find the cotton still on the stems on the streets and highways after harveting.

I shared that after being washed this cotton would not absorb any dye. So I bought a mordant-a fixative-and rewashed the cotton used the mordant and soaked in the coffee-water for 24 hours. Still not much color take up at all.

Sooo remembering tthat the cotton farmers use tons of chemicals to grow cotton, I did a research on what they might add before harvesting. Sadly I found a whole paragraph of chemicals and also one included killng the seeds that they apply before harvesting Not good at all.

Soooo I just rinsed well, dried it and then since it was a tangled mess, grabbed a flicker-a fiber tool for cleaning-and worked to untangle. The fibers are soooo short that I just teased it all out with my fingers instead. The cotton is no longer a bright white but a softer white that I like better Those of you that followed me for awhile know I do not like white in a fiber project.

My original thought was to use this cotton for another needle felted "picture" art piece. Several years ago I did a piece with bears, that is framed and I love. Always wanted to do another piece.

While working with the cotton this afternoon, most of this cotton is sooo short, I got to thinking that perhaps I might make paper with this. Would mix it with a paper pulp. That could be fun.

Any thoughts?

I am still without my car, I did know they were backed up when I took it in, but it is over 2 weeks ago now. My neighbor friend will give me a ride to town this week for some errands I need to do, and I will have her stop at the auto shop too. They are not returning my call which is so unike them

Have a good week everyone
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-3894547825099004022024-02-12T07:51:00.004-06:002024-02-12T07:57:08.699-06:00How About Those Chiefs??
I think this was one of the most exciting super bowl games I have watched in some time. A nail biter for sure The two teams were evenly matched in my opinion, and the Chiefs were considered the underdogs in this game. There was a short time there, that I couldn't watch and worked on a puzzle at jigsaw planet. I missed the clydesdale commercial so will look for that online.

The half time show was better than most, I thought it was a good choice since they were playing in Las Vegas, but I hope they bring a country music show for half time soon, although I enjoyed seeing Reba singing our national anthem, last year with Stapelton was epic and I have watched that again several times-very moving.

The victory parade on Valentine's Day will be live online from a Kansas City station here I enjoyed watching last year, although the team was pretty "blasted" by the time they reached the stage. smiles

I looked for a photo from the game to share and I chose this one. Mahomes with his young son Bronze, his wife and daughter were there too.

In my opinion Mahomes has taken the "torch" from Brady moving forward and I love coach Reid-brilliant play calling

kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com24tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-31308611313624856512024-02-05T17:04:00.002-06:002024-02-05T17:04:29.745-06:00 Spring & Happy Mail & Sunrise Photos
Hello Friends,

We are still enjoying spring weather here, although it does drop down pretty cool at night, and we have been getting a bit of rain too-which keeps me from tackling all the leaves out there.

I am so enjoying my new computer, mostly because I can see colors etc. Larry is improving a little each day, and then he will have a set back-sigh. We decided he needs one of those tall toilets as he is not able to easily raise back up and get back into the wheelchair. I ordered that today. I have not heard back about my car so will call the repair shop tomorrow. I know they were backed up from the ice storm a couple weeks ago.

A few weeks ago I entered my friend Cathy's giveaway at Acorn Hollow-and I won-happy dance!! This was fun and even more fun to win-smiles. Years ago when I first started blogging-early 2000's, I held several giveaways and entered several too-so it was a surprise for me to see Cathy with a giveaway.I may have a giveaway sometime this year too. My box arrived in today's mail. I love every thing, the colors are all so me-a wonderful pick me up for my mental health for sure. I took a few photos to share.

Everything was inside this lovely basket-which will be perfect to use in my craft room. I am thinking this is a handmade item too.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1xDymCYoTZuUn-p1xCp_5ikqzZiosIv-WivOXs0lxHPfiqTLJpinYEDlnGjde9jLAtZVWPLKgjXc_04RaPEbN2u7T_BHGeI84PiYHhqJ0zugU4AbgQ3hrSfYxobOouhWEXz5fqC5-nkzo5pwqCbIGJ6Ul97KpZmaV1WClduVzARknDF_7-Do8iSmKIPw/s2592/DSCF0015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I found a recipe online that makes just a couple dozen which I like. The photo is gluten free and they turned out really delicious. I use butter and a little coconut oil, fair trade organic natural brown sugar-sooo good, and a fair trade organic sugar. I use Bob's Red Mill 1-1 gluten free flour- that bakes the best for me. For Larry's I used splenda for the white sugar to cut down on the sugar for him-his turned out really good too.

Happy new week everyone

kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-39310744185205959962024-01-30T13:35:00.014-06:002024-01-30T16:58:06.928-06:00Spring in January & This & That
Good morning, This week we are in the '50's F, with sunshine-so feels like a spring day for sure. Good to see the sun especially and the pretty blue lake-reflecting from the sky. I was not able to see the wolf moon do to clouds-til last night.

Yesteray my friends helped me get my car to the auto shop. It charged up pretty fast and then I drove it there with my friend following. She dropped me off at the local family grocery store while she went to the bank. I was so happy to see good produce there, I think the new managment has really improved this section of the store-which is what I needed to shop for.

Larry has my brand new computer up and running-happy dance!!. The cables that hooked up the monitor were no good, so we swapped those out with some we had-and it is running perfect now. Wow what a difference for sure-I can see colors haha

One of the things I have missed is doing puzzles over on Jigsaw Planet-when I can't sleep I always enjoyed those puzzles-just completed one with wolves in a winter setting.. The only thing I lost on my old computer were my photos Didn't think to ask Larry if he knew how to save those-but no big deal really. On Facebook I have photos of Calico kitty and Nikita.

Larry can get into his wheelchair pretty easily now, trying to stand and walk is still a huge challenge and it brings back lots of pain as well. The physical therapist is coming twice a week now, and another day the occupational therapist comes as well. Three days a week really tires him out allot-but he keeps pushing forward.

I am still not getting good sleep every night, So, I am doing lots more reading. I found a new to me author I like-Ciara Knight, she writes contemporary stories about love, family, friends and community. I rarely read contempary stories but I am really enjoying this author. Her Sweetwater series is very good.

I haven't been able to get into my craft projects, so I dug out my coloring books that I had bought several years ago. I really like Crayola's books as the pages are set up to tear out too. I have those two books completed now and will use them for my slow mail writing papers. I am using coloring pencils-which I have allot of . When I visited Yellowstone Park I bought a coloring book which I am working on again now. I had one more coloring book, that I don't care for and the pages are difficult to tear out-which I did get accomplished-Am not going to color these pages but will use also them for writing papers. Sooo I feel like I will have this project crossed off my to do list-which is a good thing. Hoping I can get back to my quilt I am tying-have been too tired to concentrate on that.'

Last week I was cooking something that I needed a bay leaf for-and I was out-I usually don't run out of things like this. Decided to check out Amazon and Ebay to see what was available and compare prices. On Ebay I found a seller from California that was harvesting and selling his own bay leaves. They were 20 large fresh bay leaves, free shipping for just under $10.00 I am very happy with this find. I laid them out on parchment paper to dry and then bagged them up

This year I am hoping to tackle projects that I already had started and get those completed-and not start anything brand new, as I tend to jump around allot-which I do enjoy doing-just need to Not get side tracked with another new project this year.

I did get the new to me mordant in the mail and will test that out on the cotton soon that didn't take up any of the coffee dye color. I did wash it in soap after-but will wash one more time and then try this new mordant-it sounds much easier to work with too and will work on both cotton and wool fibers which is something really new to me for mordants.

I have never fried chicken-ever, and Larry loves it. Thinking of surprising him soon. I will need to watch a you tube video on how to cut up a whole chicken-which I should know how to do as my Mom always did that-but I was never "in" to learning that. Also, I have no clue on how to make fried chicken-so if any of you have a good recipe or how to tips please share. Thanks

Have an awesome week everyone

Update: Larry was able to walk with the walker late this afternoon-with his therapist today-good to see a big smile on his face-"and I am not staying in that wheel chair"

kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-72253979812322574852024-01-27T06:35:00.000-06:002024-01-27T06:35:34.262-06:00Computer
Good .morning, and happy weekend

If you watch pro football- the games to determine the superbowl teams will be on Sunday. I have also been enjoying watching the national figure skating event-I always enjoy that too.

My computer is getting worse-whatever is going out is on the brink of really going out. Early in the morning, I get on and do a few things, but after that as the day progresses I can not read anything on the screen.

My computer set up is old, the monitor was a hand me down from Hubs when he upgraded a couple years ago-so it's time. I was looking at large chromebooks or similiar but those are much more expensive than a desk computer-which I have always had. I also need a new printer as well-ugh. The new computer arrived yesterday, so when Larry is up to it, he will set it up for me. I know nothing about them except to type on them-smiles.

Larry is improving but then he has another setback. Last week he can finally put full weight on his legs. He worked with standing and walking with a walker with the therapist-wednesday and thursday. As expected the extreme pain has returned and friday he couldn't stand at all. This is still a challenge for him.

About three weeks ago, just before the really bad weather hit-my car decided not to start. This happened last year as well.So thinking what ever is attached to the battery must be the problem as this is a new battery from last year. Our friend near us here on the lake, hopefully will have time to charge the battery and then follow me to the auto repair shop near us today some time. They are very busy people and are always on the go-so I don't like to ask for help unless I really need it.

My freezer and shelves are always stocked with foods but I am out of fresh items. Always challenges .

We were not able to view the wolf full moon this week as we have allot of fog and cloud cover here.

Just thought I would pop in for a catch up post as I won't be online much til my new computer is set up.

Happy weekend and new week ahead!
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-75298379362957842792024-01-15T11:57:00.002-06:002024-01-15T11:59:20.301-06:00Too Cold

I grew up in northern Indiana so we always had lots of snows, blizzards, and very cold winters there. Same with northern Illinois where Larry and I lived during my working years at the phone co. I had to drive through blizzards to get to work back then. I was a telephone operator back then-when we were really needed, so had to come to work no matter what. I usually would sleep over on the couches in the lounge area and work lots of overtime.

My old senior bones are Not handling this bitter cold snap this time around. Supposed to end on Wednesday.

This lake house is soooo cold. I have the heat set to 72 F otherwise the bill would be too expensive. I don't remember being this cold all the time. I don't like wearing shoes in the house, I wear old socks or wool socks instead-so that's an issue I could fix I suppose.

Sorry about complaining. So glad Larry talked me out of wanting to retire to the western mountains. I wouldn't have liked the long super cold winters there for sure. My author friend lives at the base of mountains in Montana-where it is minus 35 and lower during the winters-ugh. With lots of snow. So I need to stop complaining as I look towards the warm up mid week.

The first year we bought the lake house Larry had insulation blown into the attic. There is no insulation at all under the floors that are exposed to the basement. Temps at minus 4 F are really cold, and with a non working woodstove-the previous owners had a major chimney fire-I am just bumbed about being cold for the last several days.

End of rant
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com30tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-10393609319418918212024-01-13T10:18:00.003-06:002024-01-13T16:40:35.433-06:00Coffee Dye on Cotton Project--Updated
Brrrr it is sooo cold here this morning, and getting much colder by tonight and continues til next Wednesday So miss not having a working woodstove-oh well.

I have been battling sinus and allergies for over a month now-this morning with cold air in the house, I am a bit nauseated along with it. Ugh

I am about at the half way point with the Galileo book I am reading-learning so much about the time period and the church back then. I will do allot more reading today.

For a break from that I decided to coffee dye the bit of cotton I was gifted. I always keep a jar of decaf instant coffee around for when I need to make kaluha so I had it in the pantry. I don't have allot of dye pots in the house, (they are in the garden shed) but I did find a spoon and a large bowl I use for crafts.(Only dye with designated dye and craft supplies-not items used for food)

Most of the coffee dye recipes are pretty much the same-found another article here Suggested if want a darker brown use 3 tablespoons of the instant coffee with boiling water. Let sit in the coffee liquid from an hour to overnight.

I put this together around 9:30 am this morning so am thinking I will let is set til around noon. There are spots of white that have not absorbed the dye yet. I had thought of washing the cotton in dawn soap first with a good rinse but then decided not to-I am thinking I want to do a needle felted "picture" again so it will be ok if bits of white show up.

Here is the progress so far

I soaked the cotton fibers in warm water til the cotton really absorbed the water well.

Grabbed my craft colander to drain and squeeze out the water

I used 3 tablespoons of the instant coffee to 2 cups boiling water-stirred til dissolved in the bowl and then added the cotton. Thinking since this cotton came out of the fields, it must have had chemicals on it. A lot of insects attack cotton so it could be pesticides. So I just rinsed the cotton-all the dye went right down the drain, Then I soaked it in a bit of dawn soap and rinsed. This may need another good wash.

I also looked into mordants-I have mordants here for cotton and another one for wool but these are a bit of a process for this small amount of fiber. I did a search online about mordants for cottons and there is a new one, at least this is a very new one to me, that uses cool water and does not need to be heated, also more environment friendly to use.

I found it on Etsy: <span style="color: initial; font-family: "Graphik Webfont", -apple-system, "Helvetica Neue", "Droid Sans", Arial, "sans-serif"; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.16px;">Aluminum Triformate ATF Mordant for Natural Cellulose Bast Plant Dye for Yarn Fiber Dyeing Printing Linen Cotton Flax Hemp Mordent The shop is Walnut Farm Designs So stay tuned

<span style="color: initial; font-family: "Graphik Webfont", -apple-system, "Helvetica Neue", "Droid Sans", Arial, "sans-serif"; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.16px;">

kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-77070507729896833122024-01-12T11:05:00.004-06:002024-01-12T14:54:08.015-06:00Our First Winter Blast & Crows & Catch Up
Good morning Friday

Well we knew it was coming, our first cold blast of winter is upon us this morning. The temperatures dropped significantly over the last hour. I put mail in the mailbox to go out-it was chilly and the hill and steps were wet. 30 minutes later i gathered up all the trash to take up and Wow the temperatures had dropped quite a bit and now we have the wind as well. I waited another half hour or so, and yep the wet pavement was beginning to freeze-so I threw salt out on the hill and steps.

I may not be able to get up there to check the mail today-and I do love mail-smiles.

We had a little of the homemade granola I had made left, but I decided to put it on the railing for the birds. The tupelo honey was too strong of a flavor for this recipe, and both of us got stomach aches from it if eaten a couple days in a row. The honey did not go bad, I just had forgotten how strong the flavor is. However, the crows loved it-and came back for more. I am always amazed how large crows are when seeing them up close. I have always loved the crows-very intelligent too

Sorry if the photos are a bit grainy-when I zoom in with the camera this is what I get sadly The crows really enjoyed this granola and came back several times I stayed in the kitchen to take the photos so I wouldn't frightened them away

Of course the squirrels are always eating all the bird food if I don't chase them off-but they were leary of the crows (ps those of you that are good with English grammar-I thought leary was the right spelling but google says no, so I looked it up and can be leery but most think that is the wrong spelling- thoughts?)

I am thinking this will be a good day for chicken soup, perhaps I will make us dumplings too-not sure yet.

I keep being tired during the day, thinking it is our crazy up and down weather along with my allergies that have been off since mid December. I want to be more alert before getting back to ties on my quilt.

I may just finish the book I am reading about Galileo today-I learned allot about his life. The end of December Amazon had a big sale on kindle books-I grabbed this one as the price is usually close to $10.00 for the kindle version. The book Is Galileo's Daughter by Dava Sobel Well written

Larry had a good week, the physical therapist was happy and a bit impressed yesterday. We decided it would be better use of the medicare money to take two weeks off of therapy. We needed the new lower mattress, and Larry needed more time to heal. The doctors in the hospital never took x rays on the "good" leg, even though Larry kept telling them there was something wrong. This was really a horrible hospital experience-worst ever we have encountered. What ever had possibly cracked on the "good" leg is also healing now. He had an injury a couple years ago the cracked his pelvic bone and hurt is right leg-we think that got re injured from the fall.

With the new mattress he can easily get into the wheelchair, and since last week he can finally get back into bed first try. Another week yet before he can put full weight on the broken leg that he says feels pretty good except for the hip area. Next week the supervisors of the therapists will be out to recertify for 8 more weeks of physical therapy and medicare will pay for that again. So I am thankful that our insurance has covered everything.

I watched a little bit on the weather channel and looks like a lot of wintry weather all over the states, and southern states getting tornados.

I am feeling better finally about getting back to crafts and projects. I am going to coffee dye the grown cotton I received with coffee. The black walnuts I would love to use but that needs to be boiled down outdoors-the smell is too strong to do indoors. I think the coffee will give a stronger brown color than teas. I know when Larry spilled his fresh coffee over a month ago on our bedroom carpet-that stain is Not coming out so far ugh. Here is an easy how to for coffee dye If Elizabeth sees this-what do you think of the recipe?

Made us a pot of homemade chicken soup-turned out delicious

Grabbed handmade pottery very large mugs-perfect for this-and fun to use

Stay safe everyone-Happy Friday and weekend

kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-65267839286743645032024-01-11T00:22:00.003-06:002024-01-11T00:33:49.096-06:00Not Happy with the NFL
Several years ago with the players disrespecting our flag with their kneeling I stopped watching sports. Players should not be allowed to do this while they are getting paid-my opinion of course. Rather protest on their own time-these players are over paid to start with.

When those of us that watch pro football during the season, the playoffs and the super bowl are the fun part to see if your favorite team makes it through.

So just a couple days ago, and now they are posting this on the tv as well-the KC Chiefs playoff game with the Dolphins will Not be aired on the tv but instead streaming on Peacock. This is the NFL doing this. The game will only be aired in the local cities on the tv. Peacock paid allot of money to the NFL to do this. As a sports fan I am not happy about this at all. Not sure if this is the only game or if there are others that has gone to streaming only for the playoffs.

I am not into streaming-which is the future they are pushing I am thinking-so I am not going to pay more money to Peacock just so I can watch this game.

Opinions? on Facebook some are saying Peacock is free-it is not free you sign up and you are charged every month. One article says you can cancel after the game-but it is quite the process to do that according to another article I read.

Hoping people don't cave to this money making deal Here is one article about it

Shows me NFL cares only about the money not their fans-sad.
kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-88522440450225261862024-01-08T22:04:00.004-06:002024-01-09T09:26:00.269-06:00 In My Mailbox Today & Update
Hi Everyone, a few weeks ago a long time online friend from eastern North Carolina asked if I would like a little local grown cotton for the seeds. The cotton was being harvested near her, and she spotted some on the ground-yes I would love some I said.

It arrived in today's mail. Back when we first moved to Missouri after our retirement, I grew seeds from heirloom green cotton seeds-can find different cotton seeds at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange-here They need a long growing time, so I got just a little bit of cotton back then-thought would be fun to grow cotton again-can use the cotton for needle felting pictures-which I would like to do again.

I am hoping this photo turned out-still need a new monitor so can not see photos well

The seeds are inside the cotton which takes patience to get them out. I can see why the invention of the cotton gin was a huge time saver back in the day.

found online <span color="initial" face=""Google Sans", Roboto, arial, sans-serif" style="font-size: 20px; text-decoration-color: initial;">The cotton gin is a device for removing the seeds from cotton fiber<span color="initial" face=""Google Sans", Roboto, arial, sans-serif" style="font-size: 20px;">. Such machines had been around for centuries when Eli Whitney made his improvements in 1794. However, Whitney's was the first to clean short-staple cotton; and a single device could produce up to fifty pounds of cleaned cotton in a day

The cotton plants need a very long harvest, so I will start some in my greenhouse bottles early this spring.

A few hours after I started writing this post-I separated the cotton from the seeds and dried plant material

We may wake up to snow tomorrow morning. Northern Missouri is already getting several inches of snow as are some bordering states. Today we had strong winds, rain-sleet-and a few snow flakes-so will be interesting to see what nature brings us by tomorrow morning.

I don't drive in bad weather any more-so not going to worry about no car at the moment.

I also got a new weaving book in the mail today. I am in a group on Facebook which is only for Structo looms-my little 4 harness loom- and someone posted about this book and that she had also just refurbished her vintage loom The drafts-patterns-are designed for the small width looms-so thought it would be easier for me to set up. To get myself off of salty snacks I eat a little granola in the evening instead.

The other day I searched online for recipes-I settled on this one I found Bob's Red Mill old fashioned organic gluten free oats in my freezer. Grabbed organic sliced almonds, and also organic coconut along with little bags of mixed quality dried fruits that needed to get used up.

I like different honeys but I really don't use them very much any more so I grabbed a couple jars that really needed to get used. We were gifted a quart jar of tupelo honey from one of Larry's customers back in 2017-it was a local product from him. Searching to buy more last year-this is rather rare and very expensive to ship. It has a very unique flavor profile which I thought should work out for my first batch of granola. Here is the history about tupelo-it is Not your ordinary honey

I never add salt to any recipe-even baked goods, but the author made it sound like it was necessary so this time I added the fine pink himalayan salt that I keep around for popcorn. Hoping I won't taste too much salt in this.

While I am waiting for the oats to cool so I can add the rest of the ingredients, I forgot that I wanted to share these winter snowmen magnet-clips for the frig. They have me smiling when I see them I do have two of each color-the 6th one is not in the photo Oh and didn't realize til Deb mentioned it in comments-she made me a little green frog magnet-that I loveeee-he is on the paper bottom left corner.

The granola is cooled now and the rest of the ingredients added. The tupelo honey flavor stands out but that's ok

The recipe said to cool down for 45 minutes, I wanted it to be slightly warm for the dried fruit to soften up a bit so added i around 35 minutes.

The nice thing about a recipe like this is that you can add what you want to and like-just go by the quantities and don't go over that for the add ins. I love nuts but I can't digest them well-so I added less nuts, no seeds this time, but added more of the dried fruits and the large dried coconut. Also if you don't have to make gluten free there are all sorts of grain flakes available besides just oats.

I am pleased with this recipe, I like chunks so I broke mine into small chunks-you can smash it up a bit if you don't want it chunky. Next time I will not add the salt I can really taste it and I put in 3/4 teaspoon instead of the 1 teaspoon. Next batch I will also use a lighter honey as the tupelo is a strong flavor-but I like it. I have just a little bit of the tupelo now-so I guess next batch I will add it in so all used up.😀

Out of the oven and cooled

after the add ins

No wintry weather here so far, but bummer yesterday morning early I had errands to run and my car would not start. huge bummer, as I have never driven Larry's suburban-too large for me and it's the newer push button vehicle which I know nothing about-my Mountainer is a 1999-so not a good idea to figure out his vehicle.

So I called my friend Mary down the lake from us and she said she had errands to do too-she had allot of errands and they were an hour's drive away. I hadn't planned on being gone that long in case Larry needed me, but it was good for me to get out of the house. There was the new Aldi store near where she was going-so I went in there to pick up all the fresh items. I really miss not having a Aldi near me, they also had the ground bison meat which I love-I like it better than ground venison-so I picked up one of those as it was more pricey than I remembered.

So I guess Monday I will call the place we go for our cars and see if they will make an exception and do a house call-otherwise not sure what I will do for help-ugh.

Can you believe it is the 6th day of the new year already??

enjoy your weekend

kathyinozarkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01644138355524729156noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6636682361472621776.post-90949672242901069852024-01-02T09:31:00.007-06:002024-01-02T10:56:46.330-06:00T Stands for Tuesday & Tea Page
Good morning and first T of 2024.

This morning was the first time I have done anything creative in my craft room-since Larry's accident. The last that I had spent any time here was to ,work on the Christmas cards and letters in November.

I had saved a few tea bags and cut out a few of the tea boxes-so decided to make a page in my German cookbook now mixed media book-which I had started in 2021

I had fun making this page, and was soooo good to do something creative-since early October Simple but fun This is my "ticket" for T

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
