Do You Buy Food Staples Online?

 Hi everyone,

This week I have been food shopping online. Do you do that? We live more rural for shopping here at the lake, then when we lived in the woods. At the woods house, the closest town had everything we would need, a super Wal mart, Aldi, Lowes, lumber yards, hardware stores, really anything at all one would need.

Here at the lake, we are situated between two cities once we reach the highway-left has a local grocery store-very expensive, a Sav a Lot which I have been exploring. Their meat is usa meat and pretty good, everyone bags their own groceries so I think that keeps the prices down. Neither store is great with fresh produce.  If I turn right that will take me to the county seat, and they have a very small Wal Mart store so they don't always have many things do to it's size, and still since covid they are still not fully stocked. That's it pretty much for food shopping there-if I would want to drive another 20-30 minutes that will take me into the Amish communities I don't like doing that by myself though.

Since I am not set up to can here or have a veggie garden-the night time critters eat everything-I started shopping online at Wal mart.com, Amazon, Vitacost, even Ebay for canned items and other staples. Yesterday I cleared and boxed up a shelf that had empty canning jars-and started adding canned fruits-no sugar, all sorts of beans, canned  meats too.

I found at Wal mart a really good USA product of canned beef and turkey by Keystone.  Online this same company has chicken, hamburger, pork and in smaller cans. These are good to have around for quick meals and as a back up. When you open up their cans it looks just like if you had canned it yourself-quite impressed with the quality.

I have never lived near a Whole Foods Market but searching for different canned beans, found that Amazon is selling their organic beans at an excellent price-and free shipping can't be beat either. (after spending $25.00)  Of course one needs to research out the prices ahead of time as the price of food online is all over the place-allot of it is very over priced

We have a neighbor that keeps telling us to stock up as food will be scare this winter-not sure if that is really true but I am thinking allot of items will be more expensive do to the extreme heat or in some areas too much rain.  I have always put up enough food every year to last for the upcoming year or two except for meats and fresh produce--so it is strange to me not to be doing that here at the lake.

I grew up always freezing, canning, dehydrating  food from a huge veggie garden  Growing up in northern Indiana they had a huge huge covered market-fresh produce came in from Michigan and Indiana-have never lived any where else through the years that compares. Any kind of veggie or fruit you would want to can or freeze.

Thoughts?? Do you put up the harvest or store foods for the up coming winter and year?  With the severe hot and humid summer here I am thinking our winter could be a doozy too

  1. Right now I'm at a stage where the kitchen ingredients are down-sized and the fridge is far less than normally fully-stocked. We live in a rural area and where we are now, have a local ALDI and other stores on the way to and from work. I'm enjoying having less ingredients on-hand. When we move, we'll likely jar and I want a freeze drying machine. Cannot wait to freeze-dry fruits and veggies. At that point, it's likely that I'll donate my old dehydrator for an upgrade or, just use the freeze dryer. We'll see.

I gotta say, right now, I love having less food on-hand.

Yes to buying online ingredients. I get good deals on things like organic white chia seeds, flax and the nooch that we use.

    Happy Weekend!

    1. I really miss not having an Aldi nearby there are two in the area but they are an hour drive away-won't do that. I am used to always having a pantry of food items-its my farm girl up bringing but I like having the food items available to make up our meals too and not needing to drive a ways for the items. nothing that close by for us.
the freeze drying sounds nice to have-is that expensive though?
we never go out to eat any more.

    2. Not sure about the prices on the machine. Back when I looked, they seemed okay. And I'd use it a lot.

I grew up with LOTS of pantry, jarring and all that too. Now though, I've moved to a minimalistic style. For me anyway. I used to have WAY more ingredients. We're an ingredient house-hold.

  3. I so can not relate, Kathy. 3 minutes on foot - REWE. 6 minutes on foot EDEKA - very good, local meat, ALDI right behind that. Canned food and fancy food you even get at dm, where in earlier days you got but soap and such. 20 minutes on foot I´m in the heart of the city.

And even in these "conditions" services flourish where you can order fresh produce and everything online (I certainly won´t).

On the big, big downside... no lake.. ;-) Enjoy yours, hugs!

  4. Dear Kathy,
We don't usually buy our groceries online as we have several good shopping options within walking distance: Two supermarkets that also offer local produce and organic food. We also drive to a farm shop every two weeks, which is a few kilometers away but offers particularly good regional organic products. We also have supplies in cans and jars in the basement - in case things get difficult with food due to poor harvests or a blackout. Today, however, I had in our garden my first potato harvest of the year, and it was really great. Can't you grow ANYTHING, not even potatoes? Not even in raised beds? We plant the potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes in former plastic composters, that works great and there are hardly any problems with animals.
    All the best from Austria,
    hugs, Traude

  5. Freezing food I've done, but canning I haven't done. My mother taught me how to, but I haven't had a garden to harvest. There are grocery stores within a reasonable distance from where I live. Oh, I made pickled beets once.

    1. I always enjoyed canning did allot of it over the years. I have large canners so they won't work on this electric stove but I have discovered if you don't grow the foods yourself and need to buy the food from a market-there is no savings to can it. so now I search for no salt or no sugar organic canned items

  7. I don't shop for anything online. Nothing. If I want to send a gift from Amazon, my friend Scott uses his account and gets it through Prime. I am SO lucky to live less than a mile from Aldi, Kroger, and a WalMart market. If I want veggies and am at Aldi, I know I have to use them within about three days. They are so much cheaper than the other stores, too.

During Covid, Scott shopped for me. I didn't go anywhere for fear of getting Covid. After I was vaccinated, Scott moved from Wichita and I had to do my own grocery shopping. I feel for you not having anything close. I can see why you would shop online.

I just cleaned out all my cabinets of canned goods and threw away over $300.00 worth of food that was old. The oldest was from 1994! Most were from 2001 and newer, but I kept a few things from 2020 that tasted OK. I threw away some jars of tomatoes I had canned myself years ago. I have only had one stove in my life and it is electric, so I know you can use an electric stove to can food on. Of course mine is the old electric stove with removable burners, not the ones that are flat like an ice rink.

    1. good morning that is so wonderful you have food stores so close. I think aldi has excellent fresh produce too-I really miss that store-they built one at the lake last year but its an hour drive each way I won't drive that far any more.now the drive is at least 30 minutes each, maybe a bit more.
I have the large canners both for water bath canning and the pressure canner and researching said can't use those safely on the electric stove I have.-yep flat like an ice rink.
that's awful you had to throw out so much food. Yes a 2020 can is still good. they say home canned is good for at least 5 years but I always canned to be used up in two to three years. store bought cans a little more if the food is discolored that I toss it out

  8. Nope i have never 'put up' any food. I 'think' my grandparents may have because they had huge veggie gardens. But never in front of me that i remember... I have a small pantry and i had an even smaller one in Arkansas. Hubby encourages me to stock stuff but i resist.. We have never gotten food online or had it delivered. One thing i do seriously stock in the top part of my pantry is toilet paper... (that circus will never happen again) . I stock 2 or 3 of whatever we use often. I think its great that you do what you do Kathy. It may come to pass one day that we will all wish we had done the same. Hugs! deb

  9. Oh ! I forgot to mention that our town which is 20 minute drive away has three huge SuperWalmarts and several Neighborhood Markets. Theres a Market Street... And two huge HEB's... and one Food King in the not so great part of town... We always shop at Walmart.. my whole life really...Even during Covid we shopped in person. We go to HEB only when an item can't be found at Walmart... We have been fortunate that our fresh fruit and veggie items have remained reasonably priced and available through it all.. I do not like the idea of purchasing my food online and having it delivered. I want to shop in person. I'm sorry you live in a place that you cannot do that. But you don't seem to mind the situation. Hugs! deb

    1. wow 3 super wal marts? that's amazing a super wal mart would have everything one would need for sure-the closest one to us is an hour drive-no thanks the small wal mart here I do a major shopping as they are usually less expensive and have the best produce nearest us but not really all that great either.
I am with you living rural I always stocked at least a month ahead on t paper etc-I just enough to make it til just after the crazies were hoarding t paper-that was nuts. haha
I had been brought up to grow the veggies you need and then preserve for two years. My grandma always said she did 2 years in case of a bad growing season. so my farm girl heritage has me doing that.
where we live it is actually less expensive for many items to shop online-I buy allot from sams club like laundry detergent etc because it so sooo much less expensive. and we no longer live near a sams club-a couple hours away so we just keep our membership and it's free shipping with them too.
different situation when you live near our in a large city. I have not lived in a city since the '70s when I lived i Denver co for awhile

  10. I haven't ever really bought staples online, but occasionally I do buy an item. I wonder with all the flooding and heat that maybe there will be shortages, at least on some foods. Sorry it's taken me to get by but the weekend ended up being busy. Happy start to August hugs-Erika

  11. I've bought canned goods online, but from places like Walmart, not Amazon. Things like Dinty Moore stew, Minute Rice, Bush Beans, etc. But lately I've had items inside the Walmart shipping box be smashed (so the employee did that, not the UPS or Fedex delivery driver), so I've decreased what I buy from Walmart now. That's why I stopped buying from Amazon: I had items arrive that were smashed inside the box, but the shipping box itself was intact, so the employee did that. - Anne (Cornucopia)

    1. that's sad sorry I have not had any damage issues so far-although I did have just a couple dented cans but didn't hurt the seals we live so rural that I don't have many shopping choices close by
