Food Wednesdays & Art for Rain

Hello everyone, and welcome to Food Wednesdays, where we share food posts in the link up below.

Since this link up is all about the Food no rules except to post anything related to food-a recipe, a cookbook or food magazine you would like to share, a restaurant you enjoyed and would love to share, anything about Food.

Also beginning today for the month of June we will have Food Wednesdays the first Wednesday of each month only, instead of every week.

With summer keeping many of us busy I think this will be easier. Summer months are busy too especially if you are a gardener and preserve your foods, or go on vacations.  We will re evaluate for September.

Are you familiar with Mary Jane Farm's magazine?  I have gotten this magazine off and on for many years now. It's a magazine I usually read cover to cover. Being in my 70's I still enjoy the magazine and learn something new with every issue. This magazine is more for an audience of younger people I think, but I still enjoy it.  The magazine uses recycled papers which are great for making up your own handmade papers.

I couldn't find a current magazine cover but here is one older issue

This latest issue had some totally new to me summer ideas for making cakes with melons and frosting. I don't get out anymore so maybe you are familiar with these?

I was assuming that the recipes would also be online, so passed on the magazine and they are not there-sigh. I did find a few from other sites. You cut the melon into slices like a cake, rind off, and then frost it. Thinking this is a cake that would need to be made and served soon after. The Mary Jane magazine had several different recipes using also yellow watermelon, you may spot the magazine in a magazine aisle.

Found this one online from a different site

Here is a recipe using whipped coconut milk  I think this would be a fun cake if you had several people over The Mary Jane's recipes used several layers like this one-made a prettier cake.

Here is one using cool whip for the frosting

I also wanted to share a watercolor page that turned into a mixed media page. I will link up with Rain's Thursday Art Day

I began with a new to me wet on wet watercolor page--I liked it. Had thought of trying to paint a bird in the water, but was a bit leary of "messing up" my page that I liked.  So I added some trees and brush and some rocks in the water. A so so page, as there were elements I liked but not as a whole. I went into my saved magazine paper stash and found the butterfly I cut out, and I found this boy talking to a turtle.  I thought it came together pretty nicely so I added it to my journal book and I enjoyed making this page.

I liked these rocks with the water over them-a little better than the last time I attempted moving water

Now it is your turn to share your Food Wednesdays Post. Please link up with your Food Wednesdays URL and not your blog's URL thank you and have fun.

  4. I've never heard of watermelon cakes. I wonder how watermelon tastes with frosting on it, but it sounds like they didn't add any sugar to the coconut milk or cream. It would certainly be fun for a July 4th cookout or other summer party. I'm glad you shared this idea. And nice journal page too. You really nailed the trees along the background behind the lake. I hope you have a happy start to June. Hugs-Erika

    1. Good morning Erika, I had never heard of these cakes before either, The recipes in the magazine looked even better and different. Melons always get watery so am thinking the cake would need to get eaten the same day-so great for a party.
Thanks about my watercolor-I liked my trees too, and I liked the close up of my rocks but they don't look quite right in the water.
we are back to rain and storms again-sigh this week

  5. Kathy, you sure made me laugh!
My Brother reviewd an application of mine and I wrote we can "evaluate" (evaluieren) if we can work together.
He was like "what?" Who talks like that?! No one will understand!"
I read that word often and always have to think of him, LOL.

The magazine is sadly unknown here.
Yay for melon-time (very cold here, though, again here).

Very pretty summer scene with the moving water, boy and butterfly. I still did not brave up to water-colors. Maybe come Pentecost - bad weather is staying, it seems...
    To a yummy Food-Wednesday, hugs

    1. I am smiling about your brother's statement too that's a bummer about the magazine it is a "country" type magazine for farm girls but lots of ideas and information for anyone and always good recipes too. I try to do a little watercolor every week hoping to get better at it.

  6. I would LOVE to have a watermelon cake, but NO cool whip for me. That stuff is nasty and has so many carcinogens in it, I wouldn't offer it to my worst enemy.

    1. Good morning, I would love to try this cake too, I don't use cool whip very often but it is nice for some dishes-we don't go out to eat anymore where allot of the foods are so not healthy in the fast food industry so cool whip is a once in awhile dessert choice like every many years haha

  7. That cake looks wonderful, but cream would be better. Love your painting, such a peaceful scene. Happy June, hugs, Valerie

  8. Here I am. I've finally joined.
How frustrating that you couldn't find the recipe online. But you did find some pretty cakes. I have never thought of making a watermelon into a cake. What a good idea!
We don't have Cool Whip here, so I will have to make the real thing.
Love your painting/collage. (And it has a turtle!)
    Happy June!

    1. Hi Lisca, I am so happy you were able to join us-hope you are feeling better too? the watermelon cake is totally for me too-sounds fun though real whip cream is better tasting than the cool whip.
we have been seeing a few turtles here at the lake-I love watching them hugs

  9. Hi Kathy! ☺☺ Oh wowsa...those melon cakes look so delicious...and so pretty at the same time! I never thought of using melon as the "cake" in a cake! Thanks for joining the art date!! ♥ I love your mixed media piece! I'm a fan of wet on wet...it teaches me to be a little more loose in my painting. I have a bad habit of treating watercolours like acrylic and trying to get perfection...it's hard to change that habit! I love how you did your trees in the background! The moving water looks fabulous! ☺

    1. Hi Rain these cakes do sound delicious, I am mostly a fiber artist/craft person but I wanted to try to learn painting. I bought acrylics and watercolors a couple of years ago. I liked my trees on this one and the water over the rocks was better than my last attempt

  10. Kathy those cakes sure do catch the eye.. they LOOK beautiful but i don't think i would like them.. Frosting and watermelon just do not go together for me.. kinda like rootbeer and icecream...lol But they sure do make pretty visuals.. Probably make a nice sketch or drawing too..hmmm... I LOVE your trees on this Journal page AND the rocks under water turned out fab! Hmmm maybe you could make a little stream with those rocks running across the page and those trees along the bank... ? :) Love your watercolors Kathy! I played with alcohol inks for the first time last night... its a learning process!! Hugs! deb

    1. I think these frostings are not sweet so that's a good thing and one would need allot of people to help eat these too. we do love watermelon just hard to find a good one lately.
thanks about my watercolors-I saw allot of improvements with this piece. I was thinking too this needed more rocks but I do love the water over the rocks that turned out pretty good.
cool you played with alcohol inks I think I have a couple bottles of those but haven't used them yet

  11. Your background painting is wonderful. No messing up on that page, for sure. It's a great addition to your journal. Watermelon is on my list for next week's shopping. I probably won't make the cake, but it sure would be special for a summer gathering.

    2. I agree the home grown ones are really good-did you get those really bad storms last night and this morning? the low areas are flooded here

  12. Hi Kathy,

I'm visiting from Rain's Thursday Art Date. Nice work! I liked how you did the trees in the background and you did well with the rocks and water movement.

Watermelon cake with whipped coconut cream would be my pick for a hot, summer day.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your week,

  17. Boy, I would like to meet the person who thought up Melon Cakes ... nobody in my generation would be so imaginative. I don't bake, because I am the only one who eats what I bake and that is a disaster on the waist line ... but melon cake with whipped cocoanut frosting, now that is right up my alley:) Rain talks about you all of the time, but this is the first time I have met you. Love your painting and the mixed media aspect fits right in. You are apparently a woman of many talents ... so glad to meet you:)

    1. Good morning, thank you so much for visiting-nice to meet you too-hugs
I liked the recipe for the coconut frosting too-that could be used as a dip for chunks of watermelon-less messy and would stay fresher.
Painting is totally new to me, but am enjoying the process of learning so far. I have mostly been a fiber artist over the years. I do bounce around all over the place haha.
      Happy weekend
