Thoughts on Link Ups

I was going to write this up for one of the T posts, but decided to just put this out there for discussion on a post on it's own. Those that visit me during the week besides T  I consider my blog friends so I value your opinions.

Been discussing with a friend about how some choose not to visit everyone that has linked up on T, even though they were visited.

One of my blog friends linked up and one week just had a handful of visitors even though every week there is always at least a dozen or more link ups usually around 16 on T. So when one visits everyone on the list and they only get a few visitors-that is disheartening.  I do have a few on T that rarely will visit me for T-so the last few months I have stopped visiting them, figure if they are not interested in visiting me than I don't need to visit them.  When one always visits and doesn't get the return visit then for me at least I figure they don't like me or they just link up but then never visit any one-I don't check to see if that is the case or not

So what are your thoughts when you participate in a link up?  Do you make a point to visit everyone on the list? or just a few people that you like or have time for?

I personally always felt that if I join a link up, than I feel obligated to visit everyone that linked. If I know I  won't have enough time to visit  than I don't share a T post that week.

I will admit though that for art journal journey, there are just so many participants that link up-that I just don't have the time to visit everyone-so there I am doing what I have an issue with  not good     I have considered to still participate in some of the monthly challenges going forward but just not link up any more for AJJ

  Friendly discussion welcome

The coffee is on

  1. Well, disheartening is the correct word, but yikes! Some days I have so many meetings and am very tired afterwards... and then I forget :-(
Most times I do, though! Whilst others take a break to have a cigarette I go and and visit bloggers, just fair enough, huh? One needs a break from time to time.
But, as said... some days are crazy.
Crazy also in some meetings I say but hello and bye and wonder why I had to spend my time there! (but NEVER use the work PC for private stuff!)

I agree with you. Participate fully or not at all, if you can. Sometimes I´m a day late, though (if I don´t forget totally...)

Good hint to stay friendly :-) We do this for fun and help, right? Without the blogger world, all the encouragement, when Ingo was sick, when I lost my job, was sick... who knows what might´ve happened...
We are a community, I see it like this. Our marriage witnesses were blogger-friends!
We visited them at home and they came to our cabin and if all goes well we expect one Perthie here next month!

So, yes. We should value each other.
I have to admit though. There is one too naive for my liking and I skip her. As she does me, btw.
Blogging should be friendly fun. And sometimes beyond... hugs to the lake!

    1. thank you Iris for taking the time to comment about this.
I agree blogging should be fun and friendly and a community too-for me the computer is a lifeline to connect with people as are my slow mail friends-as we mostly have no contact with people in person any more hugs to you!

  2. Great idea to bring this up Kathy....... I try to only participate in a link up if i'am relatively sure i can make the visits to other participants.. To me when i link up thats what i'am signing up for.. If i'm too busy that i know i cannot make the rounds within a day or two then i don't link up. To me thats only curteous .. Do you ever think link parties become too large? In that case what is the proper etiquette ? Should splitting a link party into two days ever become an option...? Not say the T party is large enough for that.. yet.. but for example T party Tuesday and Tparty Thursday .. Half could sign up on one day half on another.. and you could join which one works for you.. and only visit those on your day.. Great topic Kathy.. Looking forward to reading the comments you receive..

    1. Rain suggested a link up I think that is on saturday where she said everyone is so nice there, but when I checked on it-wow I think there were 50 or 60 link ups. I think the topic was nature and animals. I may just check out a few links to visit new bloggers but not link up.
I don't think splitting a large group like this in two days would work and maybe there is an understanding there-that it would be hard to visit everyone.
Yes I wanted to get some feedback but decided not to put it on T-probably should go there for the T people to all see-but I think that ones that don't like me would cringe haha

  3. I feel like when you link up to a weekly challenge that has a short run, like T day or Friday Face off, you should visit everyone. (Unless of course they are junk connections trying to sell something or if the person links up several days late when everyone has moved on.) That is the point to these challenges , isn't it? To make connections and share as an online community? I understand that some people may have something come up and they can't visit one week, but usually visit on a regular basis. And when people can't visit, they usually don't join in that week. I'm with you, there is at least one person who almost always links up to T day and doesn't ever visit. I notice she links up on many other similar blogs too.

I also think that everyone has days they miss a post to a blog they regularly stop by to visit, but that isn't a challenge to participate in as we all know how there can be busy days or someone doesn't feel well and the computer is low on the list of things to do.

If someone re-links a post to a couple of challenges that I have already commented on, I may not go back again and leave a second comment unless they have changed it, but I do check to see if it is something new or not.

Now if it is a longer running challenge blog where a lot of people join, I don't think the point is for everyone to visit everyone there. I'm thinking of some of the art challenges that have several hosts and that run for weeks or even a month. That is why the challenge has hosts that stop by, maybe not daily, but before the challenge ends. The purpose of the challenge isn't to connect people, although you might, but more to share art. When you have many many people joining up, it isn't possible to visit every blog. It runs too long for people to keep stopping back just to post. And the point of the blog is not the same thing as one that is more for sharing.

I also understand that just because someone comments on your blog for a short challenge like T day does not mean they have to always visit your blog, but they should at least be polite enough to comment if you leave them a comment.

This was a good question Kathy. and I like how you and Iris spoke about being friendly. Some people are so mean-spirited, but why comment and waste everyone's time? Have a great weekend. hugs-Erika

    1. thank you so much Erika for taking the time to comment. I agree with you and think the same way.
I was wondering if on AJJ we were not expected to visit everyone-it is nice for me to see what others create as I am new to mixed media, painting etc but for all too many
      thanks again hugs

  4. That's so interesting, I've been thinking about this lately as I've noticed too that some people just don't leave a comment for T Day. As my blog is on WordPress I think that may put some people off commenting? But I thought the whole point of T Day was to catch up with everyone, so I do comment on everyone's posts regardless of the fact they don't comment on my blog. Even so I don't always get a reply back which is too bad, but I like to be polite and say Happy T Day regardless andeople could just leave a "Happy T Day" whoch doesn't take too much time. We all have busy lives, so I'm not expecting a comment everytime but some people don't leave a comment any time, and I just don't join the T Day challenge if I'm busy and I don't have time to visit everyone as I don't want to be rude by not leaving comments. As for challenges, I view them differently as I feel they are way to inspire creativity and a way to share art projects, creativity and techniques; for these I leave comments sometimes but not always depending on how busy I am. Thanks for highlighting this, it makes for a great discussion! Happy weekend! Hugs Jo x

    1. Thank you Jo I am so glad you joined in on the conversation. I thought if I put this out there, some were experiencing the same or similiar.
being on word press should not matter at all-sometimes I need to put my information in twice for my comment to go through but that's the system-not you. Hugs

  5. Forgot to say... I agree with you, Iris and Erika about being friendly, how does the old adage go "if you haven't got anything nice to say - don't bother!" ...lol😉. Hugs Jo x

    1. Soooo agree, my parents told us this all the time. I should be turning my cheek and continue to comment like you are even though they don't comment, but I also thing they do not warrant a visit if they choose not to visit anyone-sad

  6. Hello,
I make a comment on all the links for my critter party. I also return a comment to anyone that visits and leaves me a comment. Maybe everyone does not have the time to comment? They could leave comments for those who link up above and or below their own link. I try to keep my comments positive and friendly. Enjoy your weekend.

  7. Kathy, you might want to check your spam folder for my comments. I just noticed that many of comments didn't show up here...for example, I wrote a comment for this post, twice even, and today I thought I need to check it out if it shows up, but nada...

    1. Hi Angie, that it is a good tip as one of my friends always ends up in the spam folder I also monitor comments-to prevent the spammers so those don't appear in comments in my blog, and I check often.
I only have a handful that don't comment and I think two of them don't comment on anyone's post they just link up and forget about T but my friend is getting less than half that visit her that link up

    2. You have to remember we had a holiday the last weekend in May and the UK had the Jubilee. That may have been why so few visited. Hopefully that will NOT be the case in the future.

    3. Yes this is true, but my friend and I were looking at how many posted on T last week compared to how many took the time to visit and comment on her T post when she visited everyone on the list thinking it is and what it is, I just wanted to put this out there so others going through the same issues will know they are not alone

  8. So glad you brought this up, Kathy. T Tuesday, Food Wednesday, even when it's weekly, and Friday Smiles are all doable. However, Rain's TAD and Nicole's FFO have gotten so big, I can't keep up, while still visiting all my friends who do NOT link to these challenges, but have posted that day.

I'm going to tell you a little secret that some may not know. At AJJ, there are five administrators (and a cat). We all try to visit everyone who links, but there are times we cannot for reasons beyond our control. That's why there are five of us. It's so everyone else can take up the slack if we are gone for some reason.

Other blogs are not like that. For example Try it on Tuesday (TioT) and I suspect other challenge blogs, assign team members certain numbers or days. Say you linked at TioT on Day 13. Certain team members would visit you. Then you link again the next day (Day 14), a different set of team members would visit you. Those are their rules.

We at AJJ NEVER expect you to visit everyone. If you see a name whose art you like, you might visit them and leave a comment. However, MANY people link at AJJ and NEVER visit anyone else, except their inner circle of friends, who may or may not ever link to AJJ. You definitely DO NOT have to visit even a single other player at AJJ.

I think you brought up a good point. It's all about caring and sharing. BTW, i posted my ICADs and only a few people visited me because I don't link them to anything. I always get comments from Deb, CJ, Divers and Sundry, and Iris, even though they didn't link to whatever I linked to that day. It goes to show who your true circle of friends really are.

And YES, nice is better. I always find something positive to say to people I visit, whether it is art or something else. It takes less time to write something nice than something nasty. Thanks for getting the conversation started. I look forward to seeing what others have to say.

BTW, I also know some people who never visit ME at T Tuesday and I'm the host. Please don't feel bad if they ignore you. They ignore me, too!

    1. Thank you Elizabeth for commenting, I had no idea there were sooo many link up art challenges going on-and yes it can all be too much for someone to visit everyone. I appreciate knowing that on AJJ we are not expected to visit everyone Erika mentioned that too.
That is very rude not to comment on the hostess's post-sad

I always enjoy your visits and reading your comments and I do reply back to your comments as well
