Bag Update & Linking With Rain's Art Date

I spent this morning making another bag pattern and then cutting it into pieces for the fabrics. This is working out easier to figure out the piece's layout. I will see how this one sews up, and then can always cut it up differently.

This first bag includes fabrics using: Procion dyes, rust dyes, Pebeo sun paints with salt, natural mimosa dyed-the pretty yellow piece.  The book suggests adding 1/4' to 1/2" on all the sides of the patterns-I chose the 1/2''. This allows for the pulling in of the stitches and also to make sure the cloth underneath is completely covered.

I have always loved fall colors so most of the bags will reflect that

I always loved the beautiful yellows one gets with the mimosa leaves. Much prettier than dyeing with goldenrod-and the goldenrod is tricky-have to pull the cloth out at just the right time The triangle piece next to the yellow was dyed with Pebeo sun paints and salt

So now I will take a break and then lay these fabrics out correctly for sewing. The book suggests using glue stick for that-who knew?  Never would have thought of it.

  Happy Monday

Update: Wednesday-linking up this post for Rain's Art Date  Thinking these hand dyes could be considered art.

    1. This is an easy pattern to cut out-and wouldn't have to do the patches of fabrics-this little bag ends up reversible too

  11. Your fabrics are so pretty. Interesting about the glue stick. My first thought was that it would make it stiff, but for a bag, that's probably not a bad thing!

  13. I am hoping this comment publishes. I was very frustrated yesterday and I don't even remember what I wrote, other than I know I talked about different dyeing processes.

Yesterday I wanted to talk to you about rust and sun dyeing. You know I love to rust and also eco dye fabric. Because I am NOT a fan of dyed fabric that uses dyes that require masks and processes that require several steps, I found a great way to sun dye using Golden Fluid Acrylics. I learned the main thing is to keep the fabric wet while distributing the paint.

For rust dyeing, I am very careful to wear gloves and wash the fabric in baking soda water as soon as the fabric has reached it's optimum rust. I think you have some beautiful hand dyed fabrics that you are using. I look forward to seeing how the bags turn out. I'm sure I had a point I was planning to make, but for the life of me, I'm not sure what it was.

    1. Hi Elizabeth, thanks so much for returning. I am not a glove person at all but when it comes to dye, I always wear gloves. I don't remember how I neutralized the rust dye pieces-these were done back when I first retired in the fall of 2003. I may have used vinegar in the rinses back then I didn't take good notes either.
I did enjoy all the different dye methods I played with

  16. They absolutely are art and I can't wait to see the finished product. I assume you will come back to Rain's with it, right? Meanwhile, I can relate to finding your creative self after retirement. We have followed a similar path, though my creativity is more in the sketching and painting area. Glad to have you with us, Kathy :)

    1. Good morning Andrea, thank you so much Yes I will be back visiting Rain's Thursday event for sure. I am really enjoying the positive "vibes" from this community very much.
Yes I will post some progress with my bags-but not too much as some of these will be gifts for my slow mail friends. I am waiting for stencils to arrive in the mail-I am not good with marking a pattern free hand on fabrics-

I have not did much sewing for years but have a vest I would like to make...when the weather turns cooler. Thanks for such great photos that show how you are progressing. Have a wonderful rest of the week. Hugs
