T Stands for Cold Brewed Teas and Coffee

It's T time again over at Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog.  This link up is for sharing and commenting on each other's posts, only requirement is to share a drink related photo.

Last week I shared my cold brew tea in my lovely vintage crystal pitcher  I enjoyed the lemongrass tea with citrus peels very much. The second time I made it I left the tea to brew in the refrigerator for around 36 hours-I got a better flavor and also the extended time smoothed out the citrus flavors.

Over the weekend I ran into a box of Bigelow large tea bags for cold brewing tea. I found I had two large tea bags left, and my pitcher was the exact size I needed -so perfect.  I had forgotten about having this in my tea stash..

A peak into my frig shows it already has a lovely color

When I made this up Saturday morning, I got to thinking is there really a difference between cold brew tea and a homemade iced tea?

In the summer time my Mom would steep a bunch of tea bags in very hot water, let sit for while, and then she would pour it all over a pitcher half filled with ice and add fresh sliced lemons(and lots of sugar.   I remember it seemed quite the process at the time  I don't put a sweetener in my teas

So I did an online search From here  and from here lots of information and both mentioned  flavors-which tastes better?

from the second link I agree with  them This link they stated: With Cold brew, the slower brewing process creates a sweeter brew that is more delicate and nuanced. There is very little bitterness and astringency in this process, even if the leaves are left in water for a longer period of time. Darker and roasted teas tend to have a bold, deeper, and more complex flavor

I have one more link to share here  Cold brew teas and coffee

This link is full of information and it also shares what I had read about years ago maybe back in the 90's or earlier:  that sun teas can grow dangerous bacteria-

So although sun teas are fun to brew I no longer make them.

With our extreme heat and humidity continuing for who knows how long.  I will be making pitchers of cold brew tea for us this coming week, Larry may even enjoy some cold brew coffee. (smiles)  Of course you can spruce up your cold brew coffees-with cream, sweets and more-we usually just like teas and coffees plain without all the extras. A bit of kahlua is nice though in cold coffees too.

I received two lovely cards in the mail this past week-I love my slow mail friends thank you both.

From Deb this very pretty handmade card I really love it makes he happy

and from another dear slow mail friend at Hill Top, along with her handmade stationary (handmade is so much more fun) she made a tag for me, and I also love her stamps on the envelope and her papers-and a cool postage stamp too.

I have one more drink share.  Most of you know I love Yellowstone, and back when I was planning my visit there in 2017 I picked up a couple of these really wonderful Liberty water bottles-made in the usa.  I am adding a little ice in the bottom fill up with cold water and add a tea bag and put the lid on. I don't drink enough liquids even in the hot summer time so thought this would help me drink more water during the day (and tea) I also have a couple mints growing so I snip off a few leaves and add them in water too along with a little lemon.

PS I deleted this post to get rid of a problem with a link that I couldn't fix-and I shortened this post too. so that's why you may see two in your feed.

Will write a stand alone post about my hand dye fabric pieces and sashiko jacket project-ongoing with ideas

In my previous post-if interested- I posted a discussion about link ups, you are most welcome to join in the discussion.

Happy T everyone, hoping you can stay cool in this heat if it has reached you too.

  2. I just love your Yellowstone cup.. Its so beautiful... I've often wanted to try to paint that image.. We've made sun tea in the past with the kids.. It was fun.. Not always successful though.. sometimes it got bitter.. Our homemade ice teas often came out bitter so we stopped making them.. Even when we used hot water ( we know not to let it boil) it would come out bitter.. So we enjoy tea out.. In the winter time i enjoy a cup of hot decaff tea in the evenings.. You teas look beautiful Kathy.. I have never done cold brew for ice tea.. may have to try that this summer.. Happy happy early T day! Hugs! deb

after reading the links I posted, I am convinced that the cold brew tea takes care of any bitterness comes out very smooth I love it, and sooo easy too. I have been letting mine sit in frig for a day and a half before taking the tea ball out Happy T

  3. Hi Katy! I just read that you drink too little fluid and that is not okay since drinking enough water maintains the balance of body fluids, which helps transport nutrients, regulate body temperature, lubricate joints, create saliva and digest food. Also by drinking water we manage to reduce the amount of salt in our diet that we consume without realizing it. An excess of sodium can result in the body retaining fluids. The ideal is to drink at least two liters a day. It is not necessary to drink only water. The 2 liters can be part of teas, broths, juices, etc.

  4. You certainly are well versed in cold brewed teas, they sound delicious! Such beautiful letters you’ve received in the mail as well! I can’t wait to see the progress on your jacket! I’ve always wanted to do that but I just don’t have the eyesight to do it now,

    1. Hi Laurie, when I was making up the last pitcher of tea I thought I would research it out a bit-interesting haha
I think I have switched gears now away from the jacket for now, and will work on a smaller project first-more soon hugs

  6. I love your new script! It actually seems easier to read. Our children couldn't wait to learn to write in cursive, as though that made them more grown up, it seemed. Now, our grandchildren are printing their ways right into high school. I will definitely be trying cold brew tea. It sounds like a perfect beverage for the hot days ahead. I am so enjoying our letter writing back and forth. I had almost forgotten how wonderful it is to find a letter waiting in the mailbox.

    1. I remember I struggled allot with learning to write cursive, but then back then my Mom sent me to school when I was 4 years old back then they could do that-I think she wanted one out of the house haha. I am really liking the cold brew tea flavors much better than the original iced tea method-steeping in hot water and then pouring over ice--much easier too the frig does all the work haha.
I treasure my slow mail friends very much-hugs

  8. There is nothing better on a hot day than ice tea. I don't like to add sweetener to mine either. I didn't know the difference between cold brew and not cold brewed so that was interesting to learn about. And I could tell your water bottle was Yellowstone. Those floods they have are devastating in parts of the park. I've been keeping up with the info about the floods since In September my husband and I are going to visit for a few days. Last time we went was when my daughter was 10 and boy was she cranky. It's too bad the northern part of the park is closed through this entire season. I'm not sure yet if we'll end up going or change our park plans a bit. I hope you have a wonderful T day and week ahead. And stay cool. Too bad I can't send you some of our temperatures. This morning it was only 45 degrees. hugs-Erika

    1. Yes I didn't really know the difference either in iced tea and cold brew, but I tell the difference in flavors with the cold brew I like it better and so much easier. I fell in love with Yellowstone area when I discovered Peggy Henderson's historical romance novel series she also several other series that all connect. Her husband takes care of old faithful inn year round he is also a historical craftsman, good thing he has an apartment in the park with his job as his home is our of the flood zone but near all the damage to the north side-most of those roads are gone right now. I was thankful I was able to visit back in 2017 as I would not have been able to go otherwise.
45 in the morning would be nice-cool things off here for a bit Happy T

  9. I had never heard of cold brewed tea before. The advantage for YOU is, it reduces the amount of caffeine through the cold brew process. I need all the caffeine I can get, so cold brew is probably not for me. However, I love how you took us through the process. Also, I had NO idea sun tea was bad and created bacteria. I am SO glad you shared that, because I have made sun tea every summer.

How nice to get such beautiful gifts from friends. The card and tag are stunning. LOVE them.

Thanks for sharing your cold brewed tea, your water bottle from Yellowstone, and your amazing gifts from friends for T this week, dear Kathy. BTW, glad you told me about the second post, because the first one was on my computer screen and then it wasn't.

  11. Good info, thank you
I stopped making sun tea because I note stomach issues too many times. Bacteria build up explains it.

I brew in a large mug, cool, and add spring water.

  12. I found the cold brewed tea info very interesting Kathy. I always have done like your mother did. Hmmm...time to rethink some of this as my stomach can be sensitive at times.

  13. I'd prefer coffee to tea, but not more than two cups a day and those are usually half milk. Ice tea is not for me - usually I have tap water and flavor it with lemon to stay hydrated. In the summer I sometimes make Karkade.

  14. I would love to taste that Bigelow cold brew; it sounds so good. I didn't know about the sun tea and for years we drank it all the time. But we don't drink iced tea anymore. Mostly we drink water, or I drink hot tea and my hubby drinks coffee in the mornings. Thanks for all the interesting information about the teas. Happy Tea day.

  15. Hi Kathy,
Loved reading about the tea making process. My dad made tea similar to your mom. I rarely drink iced tea now, maybe it is because we had so much of it growing up.
Lovely art you received. I have never tried that flavor tea but I like that it says probiotic. I think I am going to try to find some.
    Happy Tea Day,

    1. I don't like making iced tea that way either, and usually drink a cup of warm teas, but I am really liking this cold brew method. I did find out though that for regular teas one gets a better flavor using teas that say for cold brew tea-they are different than the ones for iced tea.

  16. That was interesting about the cold brew tea. I make iced tea like your mom. Only I don't add sweetener. Himself grew some mint so I've added that to the ice tea, too. Stay cool and some some of that heat you've been dealing with my way. Happy T Day

Yes I have friends there in Yellowstone-the husband of my friend takes care of old faithful inn and he does have his own apt too that goes with the job in the park-the winters there are pretty brutal. the whole north side is where the devastation is. the family home is on the north side out of the park but they are up and away from the flood zone of the Yellowstone river. thank you I love my slow mail friends, and I really love my bottle too-hugs

  20. How interesting to read all about the different ways of making (what we used to call) iced tea. As I grew up in a cold country, we didn't have iced tea. But when we lived in Italy we made a drink called karcadé. We would pour boiling water over about 15 gr of dried hibiscus, then cover it and let it steep. A cinnamon stick could be added. Some people add ginger (but I don't like that) . Steeped karkadé has a slightly sour taste, but I used to add lemon juice to accentuate that. Some people (children) sweeten it with raw honey. It is usually drunk ice cold. (But can also be enjoyed hot). I have since learnt that it is not a typical Italian drink but north African (Egyptian).

  21. We never had iced tea either, it does seem to be a very American thing. Maybe all those English settlers brought their tea drinking habits with them but then discovered the weather was too hot to drink it so started putting ice in it instead lol. I've had cold brew coffee from Starbucks and it was very delicious though I don't have a lot of cold drinks usually. Sorry for my lateness. Happy T Day! Elle/EOTC xx
