Happy First day of May or May Day
When I was a child growing up, My Mom, little sister and I would gather flowers mostly found in Mom's garden, make paper cones and hang them on our neighbors front door knobs, wishing them a happy May Day
When I first started looking for links about May Day the first one I came across was a surprise to me-as this started out as a political socialist event about workers-ah no I am not interested in that one. So below is the happier version and what I grew up with at home as a child.
A little more information about this celebration for May Day here I found this an interesting article
From the Farmer's Almanac here with more history information and interesting tid bits
I grew up with hanging May Day baskets on door knobs
Have you celebrated May Day with baskets of flowers?
That's a beautiful memory and celebration. Love the paper cones and hang at the knobs. Would like to make it. Happy May day Kathy.

Deleteno i haven't but i wish i had.. :) Now once shortly after we moved to CA .. in 2012 we went to an event... I guess i didn't realize it was May day or at least the weekend of May Day.. And they had a May Day Pole set up with ribbons and dancing around it. Hubs and i had crepes for the first time.. Crepes and strawberries and cream.. Delicious..! They had arts and crafts and music.. Fun event.. But other than that no one in my family celebrated May Day.. too bad it would have been fun.. Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteOh that would have been very fun. I have never seen the May Day Pole with the ribbons and dancing that would have been a very fun weekend event hugs
DeleteHappy May Day to you and yours, Kathy! I think the flower basket tradition is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI did too, don't know if anyone is still sharing flower baskets any more
DeleteHere May Day is celebrated with flowers and may poles, but their are alos political marches. Hugs, Vaerie
ReplyDeleteI love that about the may poles. I never knew about the political aspect of may day before
DeleteHappy May Day!
ReplyDeleteHappy May Day Anne
DeleteHappy May Day Kathy. I never realized until a couple of years ago what a big holiday this is in parts of the world. I hope you have a beautiful spring day.
ReplyDeletethank you hope your day is a pretty day too. I am thinking my Mom was carrying on traditions with us, she lived rural so they would have celebrated I am thinking
DeleteVery sweet tradition in your family!
ReplyDeletethank you it was
DeleteThe flower cones are a beautiful idea. Not something i had heard of here in the UK. I always think of May as the most beautiful month with gorgeous blossoms and milder weather and the vision of the maidens dancing around the May pole. Happy May day my friend xxx
ReplyDeleteGood morning, thank you I love May too and thank you for stopping by
DeleteTwo years ago, I created a Tussi Mussi and filled it with tulips that I hung on myi friend Sally's door. It was great fun. I remember when I was in 2nd grade, we danced around a Maypole in the town square. We had to practice the day before and some of the girls got confused and went the wrong way. I think it worked out OK on the actual day we did it for the town.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that you brought up those memories. Thanks for that.
You are welcome, this brought up fun memories for me too when I was a child. I never did the maypole-that looks like it would be great fun for kids-or kids at heart
DeleteI have comments set for approval first as I get spurts of spam so this way spam doesn't get published. I was out burning leaves for a couple of hours. today-hugs
I know you set your comments to approval, but it didn't show as being published and it usually says so and must be approved, etc. No notice after I published the above. Therefore the second message.
ReplyDeleteI think this new change by google with the comments is strange too-it doesn't always let you know if it accepted the comment or not-that's happened to me allot lately
DeleteKathy what a wonderful way to celebrate the first day of May. I have never read about doing this special thing. I am sure when folks found them on their door knobs they were very blessed and happy. Hope your first day of May is wonderful friend. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThanks you too-enjoy the month of May I remember we all had much fun on May day with hanging flowers on friends door knobs-a fun surprise for them
DeleteWe had little plastic baskets that we would put a few flowers in and put it on their doorknob and knock and run
ReplyDeleteCathy
so fun wasn't it? so glad someone else remembers doing this too-hugs
DeleteHappy May Day!
