Hi everyone, How was your last week? Here the weather has been all over the place, rain, T storms strong winds, freezes a couple nights, and Sunday in the 80 degrees f with full sun. Monday cool with lots of rain. This is typical Missouri weather though with extremes in temperature changes. We retired in the fall of 2003 and the weather still surprises me-we moved down from the Illinois-Wisconsin border after retiring.
This post also brings us to T where we share a drink related photo with friends over at our hostess Bleubeard and Elizabeth-find link in my side column You are welcome to join the link up
Sunday was such a lovely day that as soon as it warmed up a bit I spent several hours digging out some weedy ground cover over in the area in front of the rock walls. I got most of it done. I also helped move some very heavy concrete pavers for the dock project. Hubs found what he needed used here at the lake. There is allot of them though. He had help loading them in the trailer but we haven't been able to get one of the helpers that he pays to unload them-so we have to do it. Very difficult for our ages and Larry's health but we manage to get it done just takes allot more time to do it.
I ordered a few more seeds. Since I keep getting into this poison ivy mess-which is still not healed at all, I decided I needed jewelweed. This will grow near poison ivy and oak but I have never seen it at our woods property, and we had allot of poison ivy-oak there but I could see it easily and stay away from it. Here is a link about it and it attracts the pollinators too along with the hummingbirds This can be a ground cover or a very weedy bush if the seeds are planted close. Needs to be planted in the ground as does not transplant well I also learned that the seeds in the pods are edible These do need a cold treatment-as I am learning most perennial plants do-I may just wait til fall to plant these seeds.
I wanted to buy a few more of the hummingbird mint plants but the seller sold out quickly. Looking around online these are very expensive around $16.00 or more per plant plus shipping So I searched around for seeds-there are many colors available. The scientific name is Agastache Kudos Hyssop I purchased seeds of red flowers and a packet of mixed flower colors. They look like they will fill in an area nicely with lovely blooms-and the pollinators and hummingbirds love these too.
My bottle greenhouse are doing pretty well. I still have many that have not sprouted yet-but I have many that have sprouted. and I was able to save up more bottles to finish planting the last of the seed I had for the creeping thyme.
The ground phlox that I planted (and got the poison ivy and fiberglass) is growing well and even has a few pink flowers already.
To take notes for this gardening adventure-replacing all grass with perennials here at our lake home- I picked up a Gardening Journal that I am excited about. I have fallen in love with the flower fairies by Barker and found this 2004 copy for just $5.00 free shipping., said like new. Not sure if this is printed every year with different flower fairies but most of these older editions are selling for around $15.00 and up-I found several on Amazon for $50.00 each-I would say I found a good bargain. 😀 I had bought a lovely book last year that included all of her fairies with poems. I have really enjoyed her book so much.
I don't have new art photos to share, I did really enjoy my watercolor-ink exercise with the sheep last week though, and finally did not feel as intimidated with learning how to paint. (if interested can check previous posts)
I am liking the idea of using watercolor inks as they can be watered down for different colors too. I decided I wanted to pick up a few colors. I went shopping at a large online site for these inks which has good discounted prices on many art supplies I had been happy with them in the past. However, when I went to check out what?? $22.00 for shipping just a very few items? Contacting them about this-they are telling me that watercolor inks are hazardous materials so the companies are adding this additional fee. What?? Told them I won't be buying from them again. I ended up going back to Amazon with free shipping. I did look for and find this general information on the Windsor Newton site, anxious to get these inks now to see if there are any hazard warnings on the labels
This is what I picked up There are many brands so I went with Windsor and Newton Reading reviews many really liked these inks. Also good for dip pens-I think there will be some fun with writing to my slow mail friends in the future with these ink colors. This brand also sells gold and silver ink.
Update: Later this afternoon I just got my box of these inks in the mail-and there are No hazard warnings on the box or the bottles.
During one of the days we had low temperatures with a freeze I was cold so decided to make me a mug of hot cocoa with the mix I made awhile back So this is perfect for my drink share.
Happy T and new week ahead
Fun post, Kathy. You have been working very hard again getting everything ready in your garden. Love the beautiful hotos from the dock, you live in a beautiful place! I didn't know inks were hazardous materials either, glad you found some by Amazon with free shipping. Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteHi Valerie, I am not sure if the inks really are hazardous materials, I will report back what it says on the labels. I did know that there are some toxic watercolors used in the olden days but I do not buy those.
DeleteHappy T
A great post-loaded from start to finish with things I love! Your flower garden adventures (minus the poison ivy) is so fun! I am taking notes about the inks and look forward to learning more about them. And hot cocoa looking over the lake! 😍
ReplyDeleteGood morning, yes this is an adventure for sure-and fun too. I am really inspired now too seeing a blog friend from T that did the same thing to her yard in California-and is gorgeous mine won't be as fancy for sure, but I am on the lookout for neat bird bath and a statue or two Hot cocoa s the best isn't it?
DeleteEEK! $22.00 for shipping. I checked my bottles just now and they are AP certified, therefore non-toxic. I have purchased those inks from Dick Blick for years and never had to pay that much for shipping. You will love those inks, they are super vibrant and really beautiful. The hot cocoa looks delicious. Have fun with the garden, minus the poison ivy and oak of course.
ReplyDelete-Soma
Hi Soma, I just got my ink in the mail today and nothing anywhere says they are hazardous I didn't think they should be. I had ordered a couple watercolor tube paints too and those were colors that were non toxic too so that shipping was ridiculous. I will check out Dick Blick I had forgotten about that art company. I don't like to give all my spending to amazon. but they do package things well and take care of any problems right away.
Deletethe packaging is so cute too can't wait to try them out.
Back in Indiana I tried to go ground cover only but it didn't work too well for me. Here in the desert there are mountain flowers but it's hard to plant flowers because almost all animals are free range and love to eat them. Fencing around the house is on the To Do list, though I don't see it in the immediate future.
ReplyDeletexx, Carol
Hi Carol, I will be planting allot of perennial flowers too for the herb values and also for the butterflies and the hummingbirds Hoping this works out should be pretty here if it does. this land is pretty much all steep hills so neither of us can cut the grass here and the last two years have not found a good lawn service. we will enjoy the flowers and the hummingbirds and butterflies for sure.
Deletefencing is allot of work and costs allot of money too-depending on what you use-and thinking you would be dealing with rock as well to get through Our lake house is built on slate rock so when I am digging in places I run into solid rock in spots.
hugs
Wow on the beautiful and good quality art inks!
ReplyDeletethanks Christine I am exciting to play with these
Deletethanks and you as well
ReplyDeleteKayhy, your garden will look beautiful in spring-summer. It is very good to drink a hot chocolate after a hard job like the one you have had
ReplyDeletethank you Norma, the hot chocolate is a nice treat too
DeleteHow odd that youw ere told the high shipping was due to hazardous ingredients - doesn't really make sense of me. I'm glad that you got the Winsor and Newton watercolor inks and found there are no hazards! I like Winsor and Newton, it's a good company. Darn about the poison ivy - that's not fun. We have poison oak here and it's downright terrible. Looks beautiful, but if you happen to touch it - ouch! I hope all your seeds work out, or a good portion of it. I think there is always a bit of loss included when you start plants from seed. I have never tried to grow agastache from seeds, I always had them a transpants. They are lovely plants with brilliant colors, but here in our area rather short lived, unfortunately. Gardening really is a trial and error process and that's what I like about it.
ReplyDeleteI know I think this high shipping fee is pretty strange the company I was going to buy from is Jerry Artarama so I was very surprised by this-they always had good prices-but they have one flat shipping fee now of just under 10.00 if you spend less than $75.00 so I wasn't happy about that either but then when it changed to the $22.00 I contacted them
DeleteI love Winsor and Newton too, especially since it is Not made in China
I have not grown much in flowers and perennials before, so this is all new to me. I always had a huge veggie garden and preserved it all. when we moved to the lake I knew I was giving up my garden but I am under an hour to the Amish markets so I can get fresh food to preserve still.
Gardening is an adventure so I am approaching it that way.
You are quite the gardener! You are doing so much. It is going to be beautiful, because all your hard work will pay off. I hope your poison ivy heals soon. Our weather has been crazy in Kansas, too. It was nice enough to walk outside today but will be cool again tomorrow! Happy T Day.
ReplyDeleteHi Sharon, I have never really done much with flowers so this is a garden adventure for sure.
DeleteMe too this is a rough road with this burning rash. I have a feeling we will be getting a very hot summer this year because of the rough winter and slow spring start-we'll see
Wow- what a huge shipping fee! Can't say I've run across that before. Aah, but then your garden fairy book was a fabulous find!
ReplyDeleteI have a few W & N inks but haven't played with them in awhile.
Good luck with all your continued gardening and planting. Happy T day!
That shipping fee was a new one for me too and telling me it is a hazardous fee when the products are not toxic.
DeleteThe fairy garden book was a fabulous find-when I saw it had to get it then discovered most of these are quite expensive. Happy T
Hi Kathy. I know about jewelweed because a lot of it used to grow behind my parent's home. I've never had poison ivy but my brother gets it terrible and he used to use the jewelweed to help it. And it does work. I bet with all your garden work it will look wonderful. Hot coco is always delicious, but especially when it is cold. Your mix looks delicious. I hope you have a great T day. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteHi Erika, oh I am happy to know someone that has used the jewelweed and that it will help. I read more about it and the native americans used it allot and was surprised that the seeds in the pods were edible
DeleteAre you having problems with that Poison Ivy again Kathy? Just love the Fairies book and it has given me an idea as a present for my sister who is very much gardening orientated. I am convinced she has green fingers as she makes anything grow. That shipping fee is far to steep. I would have done the exactly the same as you and moved back to Amazon. Take care now. Amanda x
ReplyDeleteyes and unbelievable as I saw no plants I was digging up small bushes and I am thinking I must have gotten into underground roots. also there was a mat used that was not garden cloth to prevent weeds thinking it had fiberglass or something in it-so a double dose for horrible haha
DeleteThis illustrator produced these lovely fairies and poems in the early 1900's this book was a great find excited to see in my mail box-hugs
Wonderful garden pictures and plans, Kathy. Love the garden fairies (great find), and crazy about those shipping charges! I think I may get some of the inks too - thanks for sharing your research. My favorite thing is your lake picture, of course. Happy T-day and hugz
ReplyDeleteGood morning and thank you. I got the inks in yesterdays mail packed very well in cute little boxes non toxic nothing hazardous on the labels Happy T hugs
DeleteWhat a great post, and so varied.
ReplyDeleteThat is very expensive postage! Especially when what you wanted was not toxic. Good that you didn't buy there.
Your garden is going to look fab when everything is green and even flowering. The bottle cloches sound like a good idea. I'll look into that.
Happy T-Day,
Lisca
Hi Lisca, yes that was totally crazy about the shipping fees. I bought a set of 8 inks that were all in little boxes and all put in another box nice and tightly packed and into another box so I had no issues at all with my inks going in the mail
DeleteYes I do like these bottle greenhouses-they handle the weather too, sometimes things don't sprout but I don't think that is the bottles fault-hugs
Jewelweed grows like crazy up by the woods on my property. I think there is some by the garage, too. So this lets you know if poison ivy is growing nearby, too? I didn't know the plant was good for poison ivy rash. Good to know. Happy T Day
ReplyDeletethat's awesome to have it near by I knew of jewelweed but I have never seen it growing wondering why it was not in our woods property.
Deleteyes it works best fresh I have been reading-just break a stem and rub on the liquid inside
Fighting the poison ivy wars is a difficult task, and I'm glad you've found something that'll do well in the space. It's a shame businesses don't seem to want to compete with Amazon. What's with that, I wonder! Happy T Tuesday
ReplyDeleteHi I really do not get that either. I have bought from artarma before with no issues like this-they always had good sales on items too. my inks came package very well from amazon with no issues at all Happy T
DeleteI love the fairy books my granddaughter was so into Faries I hope she never really gets out of them lol. You can also use jewel weed to dye wool we did it in a class a few years ago. So sorry you are suffering so from your poison ivy
ReplyDeleteHot chocolate sound wonderful. I think they are gouging on shipping I have had issues in the past.
love the lake pictures
Cathy
Hi Cathy, I was just reading last night more about the jewelweed and discovered it is a dye too love that. I have done allot of natural dye in the past along with eco printing on fabrics and papers and really enjoyed that allot.
Deletethat's what I think this is too price gauging I told the person on the chat line I will not be back to shop
Wow, it sounds like you're having such mixed weather at the moment! I hope you are all healed soon and not in too much pain. The hot chocolate with marshmallows look so good 😀. Happy T Day! Hugs Jo x
ReplyDeletethank you so much Jo we are gorgeous here today like summer but a huge storm coming in tonight with drops in temps seems crazy weather everywhere this spring Happy T
DeleteYou have been busy :-)) I love beautiful hummingbird mint plants too.
ReplyDeleteHi Angie, I am excited about the hummingbird mint I have never seen it before sounds wonderful
DeleteWhat a great post Kathy . Just full of good stuff.. Hot cocoa .. yes please .extra marshmallows..lol I found a great deal at Hobby Lobby on Alcohol Inks... Regular $4 on sale for .99cents!!! Yes ma'am bought every color..lol Now the 'Yupo' paper they want you to use is expensive.. about a dollar a sheet.. But i have read you can seal water color paper and then use it on there.. actually seal any surface.. a canvas etc... then you can use it.. so i will give that a go before i buy the 'Yupo' paper.. lol Ask anyone.. i'm a cheapskate...lol Every time you talk about your yard you remind me i need to get out in mine...uuughh... Happy happy Tday! Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteHow exciting Deb to find the inks. I didn't know anything about sealing the papers I used ink in my mixed journal pad and it worked out well-the sheep page.
DeleteI Love Hobby Lobby I have never lived close to one though great store Happy T
We are having not-great-for-gardening weather here too after getting some really nice weather last month. As you know, we had hail too. I think the issue with the inks is that they are liquids, and I know that here, there are issues transporting anything that is liquid and has to be sent by a special courier and usually with a big warning label on the box, even though it's just watered down ink lol. Happy T Day! Elle/EOTC xx
ReplyDeletethe hail sounds awful-we have a big t storm coming to later today which could be bad this is torndao time too-ugh
DeleteI just got my ink in the mail yesterday and it was so well packaged. each bottle in a little box and those boxes in another tight fitting box into another box to ship-so was all good yeah Happy T
have fun with the inks!
Deletethank you I am excited to play with them
DeleteI hope y'all can find a helper next project. The shipping cost is a new one, quite a creative increase. Not a place to shop for sure.
ReplyDeleteI am thinking it was price gauging I won't go back there for sure that is taking advantage of the situation these days-sad
DeleteOh, hazards in colors - I think some need new topics to create panic (my two cents).
ReplyDeleteYay for another lake-pic! Love it!!!
Belated happy T-Day, oh, this was a tough day over here...
totally agree with-taking advantage of the situation in the world right now-I will not shop there again.
Deletethat was a fun capture of the bird taking off hugs hoping your day improves
Hi Kathy, a very nice post. Love the garden especially the phlox. Love that flower. Hmm coco one of my faves. Have a nice day.
ReplyDeleteI am new to all of these ground covers and perennial flowers so it is all fun for me right now I always just had a huge veggie garden that I preserved all the foods from Happy T
DeleteI would have been here sooner, but I've been stuck with my new tax man most of the day. Nothing like waiting till the last minute. Your inks are lovely and that seller was full of bull, thinking everyone was unsuspecting, I guess.
ReplyDeleteLOVELY Fairy book. You got a real bargain there. Of course, I was glad to read you have found a plant to help recognize and control your recurring fight with poison ivy.
Hot cocoa sounds great today. Thanks for sharing it with us for T this Tuesday, dear.
Hi Elizabeth, I am so happy that your internet was not out of service. sometimes those taxes take awhile to get done.
DeleteI still can not believe this big art company online was pulling this-and it did not show up til I was ready to hit complete the order-so glad I noticed the change in the shipping before doing that.
I didn't realize what a bargain the fairy garden book was til I went back to search for another one as gifts. amazon has them for 50.00 wow.
Yes I am excited about planting the jewelweed seeds-and I am finding out it is a dye plant as well, attracts pollinators and hummingbirds sounds perfect for me.
Hot cocoa is the best hugs
Sorry to hear about your poison ivy. What a pain! But a great idea to plant jewelweed nearby.
ReplyDeleteThe inks look like a lot of fun. I hate paying shipping and I am with you, I would never pay $22. I am looking forward to seeing what you create with these inks.
Your warm drink looks yummy!
Happy Tea Day,
Kate
Hi Kate thanks so much-they were quite sneaky about this high shipping too changed it just after I put in the payment and was getting ready to complete the order. no reason for this at all they will lose customers for sure.
DeleteHappy T hugs
I love jewelweed. Beautiful little flower. I hope you can get it to grow in abundance. Sorry about the poison ivy. A dozen of us took a hike in the woods last weekend. I didn’t have my hiking stick so I tried my best to hike the hills without touching anything. Others who didn’t realize poison ivy was all around grabbed anything they could to steady themselves. I’m wondering how many are dealing with poison ivy today.
ReplyDeleteHi Kimberli, I still can't figure out how I got into this, but I am thinking it was the roots in the ground I was digging up, while get rid of those other plants. I also got into fiberglass or asbestos too as the previous owner used it for a weed cover-horrible stuff and should never be used like what he did. I think I am finally making the turning point now taking the steroid pills but I still wake up burning everywhere.
DeleteAsbestos? I’m so sorry! You didn’t get it into your lungs, did you?
Deleteno I don't think so, but my skin still burns at times-I think I am getting better though
