I have no art or craft of any kind to share as last week was stress city here.
I am finally getting calmed down a bit, and I have an appointment for me tomorrow to check out a new primary doctor that is close by and is connected with the hospital system at the lake here. Still having difficulties working with our long time doctor to get Hubs some in home help-which is like pulling teeth, hoping they call me back soon.
I did take a pretty sunrise photo over the weekend Ever since I watched a few painting classes online-my eye is seeing more than just a pretty sky-all the reflections in the water and how it matches the sky, all of those pretty ripples.
and for comfort food-I made us my Christmas treat of dark chocolate covered popcorn over the weekend-this is really soooo good
I worked on a couple more masks-and really I just don't like making them and I don't really like the results as they don't fit real snug like they should to really do their job properly. My friend feels the same way about her homemade masks and referred me to a company in Texas USA she found online, that is a shirt company and is now making masks. These also have filters that last 8 hours so I bought extra replacements for the two of us. Here is the link I got the sense reading on their site that their cotton is USA sourced.

I want to thank Elizabeth for pointing out that this information is incorrect, I couldn't find the article again but I am thinking now is that 70% of the beef that is coming in from other countries and then being packed here in the USA is being labeled as being sourced in this country when it is not.I had thought that was a very high number of all of our beef. there was a bill being proposed to address this issue-we have the right to know where the beef is coming from. they say they did this as many people would not buy the beef if they knew it was not from our own country-shameful of them
After what China did to the world I will be more diligent about Not buying China-which is difficult right now as most of the world has given them all the manufacturing. I am also learning that 70% of the beef here in the USA is Not raised here but imported-then packed here and then stamped USA. That has got to stop-I will be searching for a local butcher in the Mennonite community soon.
Sorry, I not did intend to go on so-but this dependance on China goods has got to stop, and the American worker needs to be able to go back to work -Sooner than later. Missouri is opening up our state May 4th with guidelines so everyone can go back to work.

I agree with you Kathy about buying USA made... But the question rises in my mind... do Americans really want to work those kind of jobs.. (manufacturing) You know a few years ago that question never would have crossed my mind.. But i think i have grown more cynical with the American people over the last several years.. I think people want a hand out more than a hand up these days.. And ofcourse i don't speak for everyone but i see way too much of it..

I sure do agree about having stuff from the USA! That's what would make us a strong economic country again. My husband's workplace gave all the workers N-95 masks-just 2 of them so I have one, but I feel guilty wearing it. If I knew a hospital worker that needed it I'd send it. The factory also gave all the workers a box of masks-made in China-but we are wearng them, as they aren't N-95. I made some but they don't fit right either.
ReplyDeleteI do want workers to go back to work-it's terrible that people are starving and unable to pay bills. But I am more fearful of things opening way too soon. Out here in less populated areas like where I live, people are relaxing and thinking it won't happen here. I disagree but I'm praying I'm wrong. Doctors are urging people to stay home still. It's not over yet, and from what I've heard, there will be a resurgence in fall and winter. What is the solution? Certainy can't not go back to work all that time. It's a very hard and scary situation.

No worries-you have my same thoughts, I think the very large populated areas need to have strict guidelines in place in order to safely bring the workforce back-they can do it just need a good plan.
DeleteI am thankful we do not have a very liberal governor some state governors are taking advantage of this situation and turning into tyrants and dictators. I hope their citizens are noticing and vote them out at first chance.

yes we did except for a few specialty items, growing up and until this year we always raised our own veggies to put up and I went to u pick farms to pick fruits to freeze or can-I was shocked to learn that over 70% of our beef is not raised in our own country-

I agree that we've become much too dependent on China for products, including medical supplies. I mean, what were we thinking, right? We need to be willing to pay more so workers here can produce what we need at a living wage. It's urgently important we, as a country, become more self-reliant.
Our state has begun opening back up this week. As I explain on my post today, our state's largest cities are on a slower path but still beginning to look ahead to gradual re-opining. More testing is key. I'm hoping things'll settle down once there's a vaccine, and I wish that would come in time for the fall resurgence they're predicting.
And I appreciate you "going on so". I think it helps to put our views down and share them. Thank you :)

Hope your husband is improving. Dealing with doctors offices can be so frustrating. They seem to have their own timing. I didn't know that about beef either. I did know about supplies coming from China, but I thought beef was from the US or at least Canada. Thanks for teaching me something new. Take care Kathy. Hugs-Erik

I made a couple of masks that were my own design, because I have no elastic. They were a disaster, but I'll probably end up wearing mine if I ever leave my property again. Right now, I've not been off my property since March 14.
As much as I agree with you about not wanting to be dependent on China, I find your comment about beef to be a bit disconcerting. I'm not sure where you got your information, but according to BuzzFeed, "85% of America's beef and 65% of its pork are produced by four processing companies, and more than half of all of our chicken coming from only three."
According to a report put out recently by Michigan State University, "Most cattle that eventually make up the country’s beef supply are from within the United States, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, with roughly 8-20 percent coming from foreign sources, and most finite numbers landing closer to 8 percent. A majority of the foreign suppliers are surrounding countries like Canada and Mexico. Additionally, the U.S. and Canada both abide by a grain-fed program, making the products from both countries very similar. So, most of the country’s beef resources are quite local, though the USDA lists 12 countries altogether that can supply the US with raw beef product. With recent quarantine restrictions and transportation costs, imports from elsewhere may be difficult to execute in any event before also taking into consideration all supplying animals and facilities must meet USDA standards regardless of whether or not they are within U.S. borders.
From inside the United States, it is hard to pinpoint exactly where beef is produced, since beef is grown in almost every state in the country. However, the top states in beef sales in 2018 were Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, California and Oklahoma. In reality, it has become harder to track down geographically where beef, and other meats, come from but it is easier to identify one of four or five large processing companies that harvested the animal."
Our state is on lock down until May 4, unless our governor OR our county decides to extend the lock down. My fear is without adequate testing, I may go out and pass an asymptomatic person who doesn't know they are carrying the virus, who might give it to me. Call me paranoid, but don't call me dead! I've never had a flu shot in my life, but this virus scares the crap out of me.
BTW, I appreciate a good rant. I love reading other points of view. I learn from people who don't share the EXACT same views I have, otherwise you are just singing to the choir.
Doctors, oh, yes. Our family doctor will retire soon and my chiropractor only takes private patiens now.

We relied on China way too long. I wanted medicine for 6 months. Only 3 months available as ingredients came from China and they reduced it.

I am with you, we need to produce local, local people need to work.

ReplyDeleteWe are lucky to be able to use a farm shop butcher [in normal times] I am really against imported meat and produce, we need to support our own farmers, no matter where we live.
As for goods from China, I will keep quiet on that one as it would be another rant.

ReplyDeleteI think we all agree we would like to by from our own countries, but until corporations stop manufacturing in third world countries, that will be hard to do. Here they would have to pay workers a fair and livable wage, health benefits, sick time, vacation pay, safe working conditions, and they more importantly they would have to pay state (if applicable) and federal taxes.

They fit great and I love them but don't want to ask her for more as she has been making them and donating them to local clinics, hospitals and other first responders along with friends and families. She has made over 300 masks so far . Good thing she has been a fabric hoarder for years :)

Beautiful view of the lake! I hope hubby is on the way to getting more help! We can usually buy British from farm shops but supermarkets sell a lot from other countries and of course we are reliant on supermarkets at the moment for our food deliveries! I am wondering at what point China will offer stepping in to 'help' with our economies...I think they are just biding their time! Take care! Chrisx
