Food Wednesdays

   Hello everyone and welcome to Food Wednesdays.

This link up event is all about sharing food with each other. As promised I have an announcement to make, so instead of having you read all the way to the end of my post, as I know many of you are curious and waiting, I will just share at the top of my post. I am excited to tell you all too.

  I was messaging up and back with Rain one evening, and was sharing I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue with Food Wednesdays, do to the low participation and also since there are really so many link ups now almost every day. Many are art related which most of us love, but do we have time for yet another link up for food? I mentioned that I was seriously thinking of dropping it in September.  Rain says I would love to take it over if you don't mind that I do?  Thinking about that for a few minutes   "I would love that"  as Rain already has a wonderful community for her Rain's Art Date and she also loves to share food in her posts as well. A perfect pairing-art and food.

 Soooo starting July 14 Rain will be hosting Rain's Art and Dinner Date. She posts late on Wednesdays-so I think this will be perfect for us. Many of you that are linking up and sharing on Food Wednesdays also participate for Rains Art Date too, so I am hoping you will love Rain's Art and Dinner Date.  Also with Rain this will revert back to weekly. Art is also photography, however you inerperet art

  Thoughts? I am excited and hope you are too.

   I was so busy cooking up sides for our long weekend, that I totally forgot to take photos. I am bad about food photos.

  I wanted to share the bean recipe that I came across last year when I was posting for recipes using cast iron. This is from Taste of Home Root Beer Baked Beans

Reading through the ingredients wow it is heavy in carbs and sugar but it just sounded really good, so I copied and saved the recipe.  
   This came out really delicious, to save on a little sugar I used diet root beer, and I used no sugar apple pie filling-the Wal mart brand was really good, I think they may have used Splenda for the sweetener.  I didn't add the shredded cheese at the end, and I didn't have the ancho chili peppers on hand so I used hot red pepper flakes. 
  For such different ingredients added to the pork and beans this was really delicious. I also don't keep bacon around so I used the all natural dried bacon bits. For just the two of us I cut the recipe in half.  I would make this again, we both really loved the apples and you don't taste the root beer. I did add just a little bit of blackstrap molasses to my beans.

  Last week I also grabbed my cast iron grill pan and grilled a turkey tenderloin-these are so delicious grilled this way-always moist

  2. Gosh, Kathy. Not sure that is good news for me. Rain now has so very many artists who visit and join in, I just can't visit everyone in a day without leaving my other friends behind. I will try it once, but the last time I looked, there were 20 who participated. It takes awhile to leave a comment, even as short one. And I'm not good with short!

    Your baked beans sound good, but I doubt I would ever try them. I have my own secret recipe I use to make them. I cook them for about 36 hours, too, something the author of that recipe didn't do.

    I used to love turkey, but somewhere along the way, I no longer liked the taste of it, much to Bleubeard's chagrin, since he LOVES turkey breast. I prefer chicken breast if I must have something with poultry.

    1. So sorry Elizabeth, I was hoping this would work out for us. I have seen that many would combine their T post with their food post, and some on T also hook up with Rain on the same post too-and I know some of those do not visit everyone on the list. of T or Rain so it's a decision. I had found out about one link up about nature and wow she had soooo many link ups I wrote the hostess and said I love her link up but I just couldn't visit all the 40 or 50 people. she suggested to me to visit the one above my and the one below me on the link up

      ALL THE OTHER PARTICIPANTS. Your advice to Lisca that she doesn't have to visit everyone is not the same as Rain's rules.

    4. and she is right if one is going to link up to an event than one needs to come back and visit everyone-I know this is an issue with many link ups where some just link up but never visit any one in the group-which defeats the purpose of a community

    5. I can't figure out how that message got posted three times. It was not intentional. Sorry!

      This is why I LOVED Food Wednesday. It was manageable, but Rain's link up is going to be much harder for me to keep up with. Even that large Wednesday group (What's on your workdesk, Wednesday (WOYWW) mostly post on Wednesday. Once the last person has posted, usually no later than early Thursday morning, that is it and we don't need to keep going back looking to find new links. Rain may not realize how hard it is for people like me who post every day, since she only posts once a week. I fear I am going to have to be like Deb and bow out.

    6. That was wierd as it was all in one comment when I approved it--I knew Deb would not continue as she was only supporting me to help get the Food Wednesdays going and Deb is not that much into food posts, and she really only wanted one link up per week.
      Food Wednesdays has never grown in numbers and one week I think there were only 4 or 5 people. I had tried posting for cast iron recipes and there was very little interest in that too, so in September I had pretty much planned on ending Food Wednesdays for lack of interest. I enjoyed the small group but I really thought there would be more interest in sharing recipes and food but there just wasn't. I don't know that many people either on blogger so now that I think about it, really don't think it had a chance for success
      I just recently discovered Rain's link up and I really enjoy her art videos, her foods and she has a very kind and interactive community, so I was happy when she offered to take over the Food Wednesdays. Whenever there are changes one can't please everyone just the way of it. In the end I needed to do what was best for me being the hostess thanks for your input Elizabeth

  3. Yes, that certainly is surprising news. I have to think about that one. My first thought was like Elizabeth: too many participants. I struggle commenting everyone at the T-Party. But I'll put something together next month and see how we go.
    Ah, I've just read it's next week. Hmm, I'll try . (I know I don't have to comment on everyone).
    Your root beer bean dish looks really scrumptious. We don't have root beer here but we do have turkey, and that is how I cook turkey breast too! Very nice and moist.

    1. Hi Lisca, yes I would love it if you can still share your food posts when you can, and your time is valuable so a suggestion just let them know you may not be able to visit everyone-hugs I love the turkey breast this way too-more tender and moist then a whole turkey

  4. That is very exciting news Kathy. I think it will work better to combine her challenge with food also. One less thing to think about during the week, and stil we can share our food. And your baked beans look delicious. I haven't made baked beans in too long. And the turkey looks good too. I haven't had turkey in too long either. Your food this week looks and sounds delicious.     1. thank you Erika I really thought this was a great idea of Rain's too art and dinner date- I don't make baked beans often so thought this weekend was perfect to try out this recipe-I really liked it allot.
      we are in the 100's this week-ugh so mostly indoors.

  6. Hi Kathy, I like the idea of doing Rain's Art and Dinner Date - she always has food on her Thursday posts anyway, so it would work. But I sure will miss your Food Wednesdays. I have to admit I'm not too big on baked beans and I also don't eat much turkey, almost never actually. However, I like how you change up the recipes and make them work with what you have.

    1. Oh I am very happy that you like the idea of Rain's Art and Dinner date, I think it will be a nice match and she has a wonderful community there already. I appreciate that you liked food wednesdays-I do too, but the participation is not growing so I think it will be nicer over at Rains
      we don't eat baked beans much any more, I usually make them once a year for one of the summer holidays. we do like bean soups though. and this recipe was a nice change

  8. Kathy as always your food looks delicious! I'am sorry that Food Wednesday was not working out for you but i do think Art and a Dinner Date will be a good match.. I will be using this opportunity to 'bow out gracefully ' from food posts. I so wanted to support you in this endeavor and now that it has moved on to new stomping grounds i will let it go.. I'm sure i'll be popping in to see what everyone is cooking and eating.. just not making a post and making all the rounds all the time.. I hope you'll understand.. Hugs! deb

    1. I do, it does take allot of time to write up a post and then visit everyone that linked up. I think that is why on T there are quite a few that only post once a week there on T and then many link up to several link ups on that post, but then don't take the time to visit everyone on all the link ups-which really defeats the purpose of linking up-hope that makes sense.

  9. Hi Kathy! ☺ I'm so happy to take over your Food Wednesdays! Those beans look and sound delicious. I haven't made beans in ages. A long time ago I found a recipe called Fart and Dart Beans lol...it's SO good. I made that often, it's somewhere on my recipe page. It came from an old Western Frontier menu I'd found online. The turkey looks scrumptious!! ☺

  10. Yup, that looks like the original recipe! I changed mine slightly though, I put all of this into the slow cooker for 8 hours on low:
    2 cups kidney beans (soaked overnight and boiled for 90 minutes)
    10-12 slices of bacon (optional)
    1 onion, chopped
    1 clove of garlic, chopped
    1 tsp yellow mustard
    1/8 cup balsamic vinegar
    1 cup brown sugar
    It's just so delicious and it makes the house smell awesome!!!
