T Stands for Tuesday-Gardening

It's time for T over at Bleubeard and Elizabeth's-find link in my sidebar to visit or join in with a drink related photo.

I spent a 3-day weekend in the garden-weeding and planting. I bought way too many plants this year. I have decided except for the petunias I will grow annuals from seeds next year-which will give me a big savings in the end.

Friday I spent most of the day adding more garden soil and planting ground cover thyme and a few flowers up on top of the hill. That ended up being quite the job-once it fills in will be nicer than the weeds that grew there

Here is a look from the top down to a row of bushes-the lake is on the left-down hill and to the right is the driveway

Saturday morning though I shopped around outside of Versailles, Mo visiting Amish greenhouses and stores. I had bought my plants last week Monday but our friend that comes over to visit and join Larry for a cup of coffee said him and his wife knew of several different nurseries. So his wife called and wanted to know if I wanted to go with her-Yes. Which is a big treat for me to get out of the house with someone else driving-smiles-I never enjoyed driving even when I had to commute to work

I did not grab my camera as the Amish do not want their photo taken, so out of respect I didn't want to take any photos in the greenhouses either. I think after this trip I have it my mind finally how to find things without bringing along my GPS.

We did start out at Zimmerman's greenhouse as my friend wanted several annuals. She thought the same as me, that the plants were not as nice as last year, and much more expensive than last year too.  I did find several nice herbs when I shopped before along with new to me mints.

The next stop was a huge nursery and greenhouse. I think I will visit this business first next year as they had lots of perennial plants and in nice size pots. I bought two lovely lavender plants and one columbine.

These are the nicest lavender plants I have seen. The columbine was gorgeous too. Late Sunday after weeding and getting most things planted-here are a couple photos

I had planted fennel seed last year for the butterflies-nothing came up-but surprise here is one large plant from the seed-it is to the right of the daffodil plants and in the back by the stone wall-would you believe that is a huge plant of chocolate mint? I will need to pull some of this out as from two little plants it is everywhere now.

Another view-in the back right is a new to me weed that grows crazy here-easy to pull out too-that's my next project-clear all that out-add some bags of garden soil and plant sweet woodruff from seed-as an aromatic ground cover there. More rocks need to be hauled up to these hills as well

These stone pots were here when we bought the lake house. I moved them here and usually plant geraniums in them

I started from seeds German Chamomile which you can see in the middle, and I planted vinca with the pink flowers In front of this photo I planted red yarrow from seeds (in the bottles too) which is at the corner coming down the steps. That green patch in front is chocolate mint

I will take a photo to share next time of the columbine as I see it wasn't in these photos.

Our last stop was at the very large Amish Dutch Country Store-which is on the same highway as the perennial nursery. In front of the store they had a small greenhouse full of plants -they were gorgeous and the best we had seen so far. I only bought a garlic chive plant as I spent my limit already.

Sunday was pancake day-Larry has his breakfasts planned out now-pancakes-then omelet-and then yogurt & granola day haha  Here is my gluten free version with fresh blueberries in the pancakes, topped with fresh strawberries from the Amish grocery store-soooo delicious-and a little whipped cream for fun In the back is my decaf coffee

We still have had no rain, it keeps missing us here in our area of the lake. Saturday and Sunday we were in the 90's-ugh so not ready for the heat just yet. I think it is at least a month since we have had any rain.

So please send us some rain if you have extra-smiles

Happy T and new week everyone Yes the lake was packed with boaters over the weekend-enjoying the first hot days of the year

  4. You have been busy busy busy!!! Are you using something to help stop the weeds from coming back? All your plants look lovely.. i've never had the patience to plant from seeds. But i do see that that would be cheaper. Who knows maybe i'll give it a go.. I've always heard to grow mints in pots or they just take over.. I'd love a collection of mint too.. My Grandmother always had mint.... good memories there.. Yard is still bottom on our 'To Do' list around here.... uuughh.. Hope to join the Tparty this week... :) Hugs! deb

    1. No I don't add anything to stop the weeds, once this are is very full of perennials it will slow those down-I will add some bark mulch around the plants too. growing the seeds in the bottles is the way to go for me-I have good results with that and they are growing in a mini greenhouse enviroment. I love mint too this chocolate mint really took over.for sure. what about just bringing in a bunch of rock-on top of landscape material-no mowing and you can add big tubs for flowers etc.
glad you made it home safely been thinking of you hugs

    2. That is the plan for the front yard... BUT rock is crazy expensive right now.. One of our neighbors spent $11,000 rocking their front yard...um... yeah thats not gonna happen.. So we may rock it a little at a time each year.. Hugs!

    3. oh wow we plant to rock one whole side of the yard we already bought a commercial landscape material to put down first with staples I think Larry checked on the cost and it was affordable but we are getting river rock which is smaller

  5. It's always fun to buy new plants, hope they all grow well and flourish. I'm sure you enjoyed being driven, then you have time to look at the scenery. You keep yourself so busy! Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie

  8. Kathy, mint is very invasive, in a short time it will appear throughout your garden. Those who know advises planting it in pots to prevent it from expanding.

  9. Hi Kathy-I think it is way too easy to spend a lot of money on plants. No matter how much I try to control myself I still find something else. I'm trying to cut back this year-ha ha-let's see if that happens. Your garden is looking lovely, and I bet when things grow and fill in it will be beautiful. I hope to start my annuals by seed next year too. It's great to have garden plans, isn't it? And have people to share your gardening with too. I hope you have a wonderful T day and week ahead. hugs-Erika

  10. Weeding and planting is a lot of work, but then in a few weeks everything will look so beautiful and you will be so happy you put in all the work. Weeds are terrible here this spring because of all the rain we had. I have the feeling I'm constantly pulling weeds I hope you will get some rain - we had years without any signifcant rain and it was terrible. Usually in summer we don't get any rain, but this year the rain was hanging on. It was even raining last night; rain in May is quite unusual for this area. Happy T day!

    1. some years here where I live we would get no rain at all during the summer months-that was rough and being from Indiana was surprised by that. we did a little rain early the day enough to soak the plants a bit. and missed the very destructive storms last night-thankful for that

  12. Before my accident I loved to drive. Now I´m even afraid as a co-driver.
Either way... I am lost without GPS or an old-fashioned street map!
I´ll skip our nursery. Expensive and you never know what happens. One year we had hail and everything was ruined - but I hvae wildflower-seeds :-)
Oh! I still have to look it up - 90F is over 30C!!!! I would LOVE that!
8C / 46F here... No rain here, either...

Happy T-day and hugs to you and the lake

    1. I get lost all the time too I have to grab my GPS-I have a very old car so it does not have one built in- I had to commute over an hour each way when I was working longer drive during the winter-and I just never enjoyed driving at all.
I am so grateful we just missed severe weather early last night-tennis ball size hail and strong winds-it was only a few miles away from us. our cars sit outside no garage space so that would have been very bad
yep 90 is a bit early here but we are do for a very hot summer this year-have not had one in a few years now. Happy T

  13. I bought plants on Herb Day and they were overpriced and pitiful. No bargains this year. Even more expensive than Ace Hardware, smaller, and lower quality. You are working hard in your garden. It sounds like you have a plan at least.

Nice to see the pancakes and nice that Larry has a breakfast plan. Looks like your decaf went nicely with them. Thanks for this wonderful entry you have given us for T this Tuesday, dear Kathy. We also need rain and have the same temps as you.

    1. The plants were quite expensive this year-and I wasn't paying attention. I did buy allot of herbs too-more of the golden oregano, varigated oregano, a varigated sage, lovage, and several several lavender plants All of the perennials I bought last year are doing really well-so am happy about that.
I have allot of work to do moving the creeping thyme ground cover up in front of the lake where the rocks are-that will pretty there-we are working on getting rid of allot of grass here
I thought it was funny when Larry gave me his breakfast plan lol makes it more interesting too. we finally got a little bit of rain but missed the severe weather last night-thank goodness

  14. We got rain last night. The only annual plants I buy are pentas and lantana, and I like to have a pot each of those. I plant zinnia seeds every year. I am trying to build up the number of perennials I can keep coming back in pots and in the ground. You have such great space for gardening!

Those pancakes look tasty :) Happy T Tuesday

    1. this is good that you only buy a few annuals. I do love these new to me petunias-they are very large and the plants spread to really fill the pots-they are beautiful all summer as long as I don't forget to water them. they will be my one splurge going forward.
I did buy allot of herbs too this year and that ups the price too. this area was really mess when we moved here-and we set up those two rocked hills along side of this-those need more rocks added and weeds pulled and killed off.
      the pancakes are really delicious

  15. It's a lot of work, but it will be worth it when you can enjoy them all in flower. Expensive to buy seedlings here too, even in the places where it's usually cheaper. Yesterday we had a whole day of very heavy rain, which I would have been happy to share :) Happy T Day! Elle/EOTC xx

    1. thank you for the rain share-we did get a bit of a hard soak yesterday morning-finally and missed the destructive storms last night by just a few miles.
wondering if the high electric bills caused the high prices this year for the plants.

  16. We have had rain every day for the past week. It is amazing how it comes in waves.
Your plants look beautiful the way you have arranged them. I really wanted to get columbine as I just discovered how pretty it is. Our greenhouse had at least 8 varieties of mint...mind blowing. Your garden looks great!

I planted allot of different perennials last year and they are all looking great this year-it will be pretty soon

  17. Ohh you've worked so hard over the weekend Kathy! But, the truth is that your garden has been impressive, very beautiful. I really liked seeing all the beautiful plants that you have been planting in the garden, and the pots are also beautiful with the geraniums. Your garden is going to be spectacular!
Happy T-day ! those pancakes have to be succulent!

  19. Your weather sounds like ours. It has been 80s and 90s already, and the rain keeps missing us. You are quite the gardener. I used to plant a vegetable garden, but hubby is the green thumb with the flowers. And now that we live in a rented place where they do the yard work, he isn't interested in planting flowers. We did have several pots last year, but it is too much for him. He turns 80 on Sunday. Happy belated T Day.

  20. Oh Kathy I so wish you and I could flower shop together. I have not made it to a nursery yet. Have bought seeds and planted them but no annuals or perennials yet this spring. I think I used to have chocolate mint but for some reason it did not grow well for me. Your garden patch looks wonderful and it will be exciting to see how it changes over the summer. Yes for sure you need rain. Will be "looking up" for you to get some. Please take care and have a blessed weekend. Hugs!
