I thought I would share my latest watercolor pencil "painting" that is in my new watercolor journal.
The first attempt I liked everything except for the building-I had the lines so off that it didn't even look like a building haha. So I asked blog friend Barbara for some help-and she helped me figure out the lines. This one is much better, but now I am not totally in love with my mountains.
Barbara says if you are not going for realism (don't think I can achieve that at the moment) there are many folk art painters where everything doesn't need to look perfect. So I liked that, felt better about this painting too.
This vintage cigar box that was one of Larry's that he left behind at the woods house-I snatched (actually I snatched 4 of these wooden boxes sshhh) are perfect for my pencils, and I have one for the watercolor tube paints too.
The magazine photo was my inspiration
I will also share this later in the week for Paint Party Friday
Thanks for Looking
I don't go for realism as it just leaves me frustrated. And then there is creating your own style. I can see that developing Kathy. I can see what attracted you to that building. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteThanks Erika, I have been too hard on myself for sure-this is all totally new to me and have never drawn or doodled anything-so working on just going with it and enjoying the process
DeleteKathy, your building is way more interesting as a painting than the one in the real photo! Your simple shading additions to the mountains are a nice addition as well. You are on your way to a style that is uniquely yours.
ReplyDeletehugs
DeleteI agree with Barbara. How we see and what we paint is our realism and style.
ReplyDeleteGood morning-thanks much
DeleteThis is a beautiful painting, Kathy. As for the mountains, next time give them sharp shapes. Color the mountains in the back with lighter colors, and the mountains in the front with darker colors. I think you will like the result. As for realism, you do not need it, my friend. The art of today is not realistic. Leave your fantasy free. Hugs, sweetie, and I think that this is my favorite painting from all your paintings until now.
ReplyDeleteDoddling and painting are good for the soul.
ReplyDeletethis is all new to me-hugs
DeleteI am not a painter and I am not a doodler. However, I can tell you that the perspective of that building is definitely correct. Mine always look lopsided or wonky. You have created a true building. It's lovely, too.
ReplyDeleteI'll tell you something I learned and it is NOT intuitive to me. Things that are closer are darker and things that are further are lighter. Somehow, I find that hard to comprehend. One would think as things recede, they should get darker, but apparently that is not the case. I STILL struggle with this concept.
Thank you so much Elizabeth for your comments. I have the same issue-things far away seem to me that the color should be darker instead of lighter
DeleteWhenever my friend, Aruna, and I would meet for art dates, she was always very precise in her drawings and took forever to complete just one, while I just doodled away and had fun in the process, adding lots of colors, not worrying about making anything look just right. That to me is the great thing about art. I prefer the no rule method while she tends to stick to structure. My advice is always just enjoy what you are doing without worrying so much about the outcome. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the house and your painting. Would love to own a house like that.Enjoy painting! Happy PPF!
ReplyDeleteThank you, I have always been drawn to the mountains
DeleteYour water colour is really sweet Kathy. Soma (number 2 at PPF today) has some good water colour tips on her blog today. Have a great day, take care, hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeletethank you soooo much Valerie-I will be following along Never thought to trace I did think that was cheating lol
DeleteWhat a beautiful painting! You captured the scene so beautifully - I love it 😀. Take care and wishing you a happy Friday and weekend! Hugs Jo x
ReplyDeleteSometimes I can't even tell if a line is crooked so don't worry about making anything perfect. Your drawing looks pretty good to me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my blog. Have a lovely day.
thanks much Lissa
DeleteVery nice!
ReplyDeletethank you for visiting
DeleteHi Kathy :) I think you did a great job on the painting! The bricks on the house are fabulous! I sometimes do realism, but most of the times I just let my imagination wander a little bit!
ReplyDeletethank you much I like how the bricks turned out too-painting is totally new to me-still having fun with it
DeleteYou painted that great, I like the picture very much. The cigar box is practical. Have a happy weekend, hugs, Elke
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Elke, Yes these cigar boxes are perfect for things in the craft room You have a nice weekend too-hugs
DeleteI like this watercolor a lot. Sometimes you have to put something aside and then look at it later to appreciate how well you have done. At least that is how it often works for me. I get so caught up in the work I can't see the whole Wish I could get my hands on some wooden cigar boxes. Lucky you.
ReplyDeleteThank you Darla, I found that too-that the next day when I look at it-I like it much better. I am now happy with this piece.
DeleteWe collect allot of things, and Larry has a huge box of the cardboard ones, and several of these wooden cigar boxes. He doesn't want them-so I have been slowly dragging them from the woods house and using them in my craft room with the covid we can't have a big sale either may be donating allot of items instead
I'm not good with realism though I try on occasion. I like the way you are approaching your paintings! Happy PPF!
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda Happy PPF

thank you so much-and for stopping by-hugs
DeleteTrue realism is difficult to achieve. I will say that I think your building has captured more than in the photo. I think you did a fabulous job on this and working with watercolor even in pencil is hard too so you did a more than fantastic job.
ReplyDeleteGood evening, thank you sooo much your comment means allot to me-painting is all new for me. I really appreciate your positive feedback
DeleteI know I am not realism artist. But I am clueless what I am. But I have fun.
