Dandelions

I love seeing the dandelions in the spring-bright yellows popping up in the grass.

This year I have more than last year, thinking it is because I have been picking them and making a healing oil with them the last few years.'

I dried one batch already and just picked another small batch. I am not picking all of them, just those in groups and  just picking a few and move on. I saw a very large bumble bee in one group.

There is a photo of the oil I made last year here in that post.

My go to site for making things with herbs etc is Jan the Nerdy Farm Wife  Here is her post with several recipes to make with dandelions-most very simple. She includes a salve, oil, lotion, soap bars, and more. Here is a link to lots of ideas on Pinterest using dandelions

In the past - like 30 years ago or more Larry and I went through a phase of making our own wines. The dandelion wine was always good.

I found a poem by Walt Whitman

The First Dandelion

Simple and fresh and fair from winter's close emerging,
As if no artifice of fashion, business, politics, had ever been,
Forth from its sunny nook of shelter'd grass—innocent, golden, calm
as the dawn,
The spring's first dandelion shows its trustful face.

  2. Oh how wonderful! I started making pigment with them. Looking forward to seeing how the color would look like. I love seeing dandelions too and sometimes my husband picks them from our yard and brings them in for me. I love that!

    1. Good morning how sweet that your husband brings you dandelions. I really love these little flowers the plant is so useful in so many ways as well. I have been following an artist that makes pigments from so many plant materials-she is coming out with a book this year.

  6. Dandelion wine sounds interesting. I usually leave me as pollen fodder for all the various bees but I knew they were useful. Happy Easter Kathy. I know your husband doesn't celebrate but will you?

    1. Good morning and Happy Easter, I never take all the dandelions when there are groups of them together I take just a few of the flowers. Leave the rest for the bees
In the past before retirement I almost always worked all the holidays at the phone company-we got 2 1/2 pay for those days so I worked them when I could. I would always make us holiday foods for the both of us, and we would also invite friends that had no family either. we also welcomed soldiers as well from nearby bases to share the meal with us.
since we moved to the lake and with the loss of a couple of friends near the woods home we no longer have much interaction at all with people. especially since Larry is pretty much house bound. I do still always make a nice holiday meal for the both of us.

  8. Kathy there is so much good in the dandelion plant. Mom always gathered the leaves in the early spring and fried them up with bacon'. I have gathered them and made jelly and also fried the blossoms in butter and ate them...a little like eating morels. Well happy gathering friend. Hugs!
