Good afternoon, we are humid and hot here in Missouri. Mid 80's with high humidity and this area of Missouri being closer to the sun (than I am used to living on upper Illinois-Wisconsin border) Is very hot for me-I think more so being a senior now.
So I am out early, usually 7:30 -8 am after most of the dew is off and Larry is set up for his day. I have most of the grass cut now-the tallest for sure, so I think one more large battery will finish it up-before I have to start again. If I keep at it-takes me a week to get it all done.
I bought bags of soil last week, the guys when they were here brought it all down for me-so I worked on that the last couple of days-trying to get the gardens sorted out and looking better. It was a lost cause last year.
I am going to need more garden soil so I called and Wal mart's generic is sold out in the large bags but they ordered 100 more bags coming in tomorrow-that will go fast. I will call tomorrow afternoon to see if it came in. I always have loved Miracle Grow but their prices have been outrageous the last couple of years, so I have been using Wal marts generic brand It is on sale now too for around $5.00 Hoping I can get some more this weekend.
I needed to get some of the flowers out of the growing bottles since we are hot now-the stems are pretty thin-sadly and those chipmunks dug up a bunch after I worked yesterday-ugh. Hoping they will make it. I grew snapdragons, salvia, and dwarf petunias that needed planting.
This first photo-iris's we brought from the woods house, and the lilies were from my Mom's garden-they are settling in this year at the lake
Enjoy your gardening
ReplyDeleteThank you-I will, Happy weekend hugs
DeleteI just loved seeing all your flowers Kathy! and your other bits and bobs... love the shallow water dishes... I'm with you ... takes me a week to get the yard done then i might get one or two days before i like to start over... I don't like to let it get too long if i can help it... makes it harder... Sitting here waiting for the GrandLittle to get off the bus... she is spending the night with Grandma... :) She always has our evening planned out... lol I have 3 Hotel Transylvania movies in my future...lol and lots of popcorn... lol Take care my friend.. don't work too hard... Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteFun times with the little ones. This year I am Not letting the grass get too tall-that is such a job when that happens-I caught the last bit just in time glad I am not the only one that uses a weed eater to cut a huge amount of grass haha enjoy the movies and time with the little one hugs
DeleteI also wanted to tell you just how beautiful those irises are! Gorgeous... i love how your garden is rooted in history... Love a garden like that.. a garden of stories.. Oh and another blog i read talks about her garden an she mentioned how her grasses are struggling this year ... either not coming back or slow to get going... Sleepover went great but now Grandma is tired... Hugs! deb
DeleteThank you Deb, I guess it takes 3-4 years for transplants to really settle into their enviroments. These are really lovely this year. I bought new little plants of varigated grass and they just are not doing well at all-I may need to hold those back to next year-to plant down by the lake.
DeleteJust got the last of the grass mowed and picked up a lot of branches-mostly oaks here and they make such a mess, and I have no way to get rid of them there in the woods we made brush piles for the critters sounds like a good day for a little nap-hugs
Glad the sleepove went well-sounds fun though-hugs
The peach/pink iris are beautiful. I'm never seen that color combination before.
ReplyDeleteThank you-when we first retired about 20 years ago now we met a lady-the flower lady-she had acres of iris's most of these came from her-I lost the lovely black one in the move sadly
DeleteBeautiful. Chipmunks 🐿 are cute little mischief makers.
ReplyDeleteGood evening, yes they are mischief makers for sure
DeleteI loved this post so much. Your irises are beautiful! I work outside some each day and have made much progress. I am wondering if our local Walmart still has some of the garden mix. Take care! Hilltop Post.
ReplyDeleteHere the garden soil has been on sale and they sold out-but more coming in tomorrow will call to see when it gets there-will go fast as they just ordered 100 bags Thank you the Iris's and other plants have really settled in now hugs
DeleteYour garden is looking very good indeed. You're right about the prices. I bought two bags of Miracle Grow potting soil last week and they were up at least $3 than last year for the same size bag. Those irises. Wow!
ReplyDeleteGood morning thank you-I am feeling better too-finally. I noticed a couple years ago the Miracle Grow was getting more expensive This generic bag 2 cuft-the big one is sale for 4.95 I think it was. It is pretty good looking too a huge difference in price between the two of them
DeleteI lost some of the iris's when we moved. I did at that time take the new bulbs apart and spread them out-this year looking petty nice-Love the colors
You have been working so hard in your gardens and yard, and it shows lovely pictures. Just be careful with those bags of soil. I pulled some muscles in my back gardening this year. I was lifting a bigger bag of promix for my big pots for my tomatoes. Thankfully it is much much better.
ReplyDeleteCathy
Thank you so much, it feels good to see this getting accomplished-we have rain coming in tonight and tomorrow so want to get the last of the grass cut and the last bag of soil down before I get more. Hopefully this afternoon
Deleteyes these bags I can't budge hardly at all-no way I can get these down the hill til the "boys' come back for work. I picked up a half full bag yesterday and I pulled a muscle too ugh Glad you doing better-hugs I have lost weight and muscle now too-this acid reflux issue really got my back during winter when I thought it was asthma instead.
Have a good weekend
It's a lot of work but a lot of fun too. Your plants are looking lovely Kathy. And I like those leaf pans too. We were hot and humid yesterday too; it was almost too hot for May. Don't over do it. And happy weekend. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteGood morning, we are pretty hot and humid here already early-I did just see bad storms went through StLouis area last night and we have rain coming in here today and tomorrow.
DeleteI was originally going to make a cast with these pans-but never got to that project. the butterflies really like these.
I have to remind myself not to over do it now-ugh Happy weekend Hugs
Your hard work is paying off. The flowers and containers look all so wonderful. But of course I am partial to those pretty irises. Janice
ReplyDeleteThank you Janice-the iris's are extra nice this year too-they have settled in and got enough rain in april too
DeleteYour garden is looking good, you have certainly been working hard.

thank you so much Jan
DeleteKathy what a wonderful trip into your garden. The Irises look like they are doing quite well. You are such an inspiration to me - how you get all that work done and still are able to be creative is wonderful. Wish you lived close...we would have such fun in the garden. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteGood morning thank you I wish we lived closer too-and you could help me learn to paint watercolors too hugs
DeleteI love these photos of your garden and yard.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much
DeleteHi Kathy in answer to your question about netting over plants. First if you don't have trouble with insects then you can get a bigger mesh netting for pollination. I have squirrels here so I plant onions everywhere in the garden. They are compatible with most veggies. I also have mint, lavender, marigolds, and nasturtiums and rosemary in pots all around the garden. Squirrels and chipers hate these plants. I also have tight netting made into sashes with Irish spring soap. I hand them around the garden. Keeps out rodents and deer. I hope you give some tomatoes a try and other things too. Everything I grow are in containers and they do well. Anything I can help with just let me know.
