Good morning Monday,
We did have storms last night but I didn't hear them-which is unusual for me Early this evening very bad storms are forecast-hail tornadoes etc-these storms seem to be stuck in this midwest region still. We have missed the worst of it so far-so hoping that continues.
Do any of you buy meat or fish packages that come in the mail?? This is a new concept for me, so thought I would try one. We live rural so not a lot of food store options within 30 minutes. I don't want or need to drive over an hour to a larger city-ugh. It would be mostly 4lane highway as well another ugh haha
I looked at Good Ranchers and if you want organic grass fed beef this looked really good, but I tried out their fish box instead. I was a vegetarian for many years in my younger days and afterwards I still do not eat a lot of red meats-I did really enjoy the deer brought in at hunting season at the woods house though-very lean meat.
I did not care for some of the fish in my box-I like cod but not theirs-very thin filet with skin on-so not much fish at all. I never had halibut and I really liked that and the salmon, and their shrimp too. My box also had two free pounds of grass fed hamburger which I appreciated as that is what I buy at the store for hamburger.
I did not like that the sizes and weights of the fish were all over the place in each package-they were just going for total weight I think. Larry loves to fish but he is not much of a fish eater. My new diet right now is so restricted especially having to eliminate tomato sauces and anything acidic that I am wanting to eat more fish-and try new fish that I have not had before. (I am finally feeling better but have lost a lot of weight-for me-8 pounds now-so I am back to my younger days weight around 116 which is ok but don't want to lose more)
Soooo around Friday evening I started searching online for just fish boxes. The site that I was impressed with was Wild Alaskan Company An excellent site too full of information about the fish, they have a blog with recipes, special boxes for members-I thought their prices were very good too. I would not want to pay the prices for their crab legs etc but I didn't know those were so expensive.
So I have a Facebook friend that we were chatting about things and she told me she has been buying from this company for several years now and has loved everything. I had some questions about some of these ocean fish that I was not familiar with so I contacted them, and told him about my friend. He says then tell her to refer you to us and you will each get $50.00 off your next box. Awesome! So since I saved $50.00 I spent $25.00 for their ground salmon-anxious to check out recipes for that-any suggestions?? I love salmon always have. Shipping is free which is a big plus.
So I went with their wild combo fish box that has a long list of fish that could be in the box. I have it set up ight now for every 2 months-but you can easily skip a box til a future month of your choice. They have really good communication so far as well
Here is the fish list that could be included for the wild combo box I am getting the smaller box of 12 pieces. The fish with the stars may not be available for where you live-these are all available where I am

I found this video from the Founder of the company
The choices available for foods these days is pretty nice for one living so rural
Have a good week
Update-I wanted to drop a note if anyone wants to try out a box contact me on my contact form here on my blog with your name and email and I can refer you to the company-we each get $50.00 off one box order--that is pretty nice of them.
I live in Montreal in an apartment building and I have never ordered anything online. You would think that I had at some point given the fact that I am 68 years old. It sounds interesting, and the contents sound tasty. My favourite fish is salmon, but I also like Rainbow trout, cod and sole as well as haddock. And shrimp as well. Wild caught ocean fish such as Atlantic salmon are the best! I have heard that some people subscribe to what are known as "subscription boxes", and the items can vary from sweets like chocolate to stationery to just about anything that interests you. The only thing I don't like about these is that although you fill out a survey before they send you anything...to get an idea of what your interests and tastes are, you don't get to pick what they send you. So sometimes you may get things that you wouldn't order or buy. Thank you so much for sharing your post, although this isn't something I have done or would do myself, I enjoy hearing about it! Have a wonder filled week!
ReplyDeleteGood morning, i am 75 now and since moving to the lake house, and taking care of my dear husband-I buy a lot online now. we live rural so not a lot of choices for shopping without needing to drive an hour away or so-no thank you haha. so I like comparing prices online for what I need-sams club, wal mart online, amazon, ebay and others. and it gets shipped to my door-I have a steep hill and steep steps-so that is nice too-smiles.
DeleteI have never bought food this way before but I don't have access to quality fish unless I want to drive an hour in traffic to get to a good fish store.
I just ordered my first box today and they gave me the list of fish that would be included-and that I could contact them and stop the shipment if I didn't want the fish that was in it-so I thought that was really nice of them.
will see how this works out and how the fish is.
I have not tried a subscription box before these.
thanks so much for visiting - and enjoy your new week-hugs
Good evening I am so glad you came back-yes you have a good set up being able to take public transportation and shop. The last time I lived in a city was back in the late '70's in Denver Colorado-a western state here. I found my career job there with the Bell phone co back then-and I did not have a car so I did the same thing-took public transportation for all my shopping -there was no computers back then either I don't think.
Deleterural life and city life are pretty different for access.
I enjoy your posts too-thank you for finding me-hugs
I live inland and don't eat much fish. However, when I'm on vacation by the sea, I really look forward to being able to eat fresh fish.
ReplyDeleteI also have several grocery stores nearby. Now in spring and summer, I like to ride my bike to the shops.
So, a completely different living environment than yours.
The deliveries for you sound really good... I wouldn't have any problems preparing them at all. We spent three weeks in Norway for a year and caught only mackerel every day... I then prepared them differently every day... I hope you enjoy your fish deliveries. I think they're really good.
Best, Viola - and hug.
Food afternoon, You live in such a lovely area too-awesome you can ride your bike to stores-love that,
DeleteI love fish so anxious to try new ones to me hugs
You could make salmon pie or salmon patties both yummy. I live in New England so I have access to fresh fish. It sounds good tell us how you like it.
ReplyDeleteCathy
Yes you are close to ocean fish-tel me about salmon pie-not familar hugs
DeleteNot a fish eater Kathy... we almost always do catch and release but now hubby is not interested in fishing anymore it seems... I eat fish at Long John Silvers once in a blue moon..Never cook it at home.. When we went deep sea fishing we caught and ate King fish and really enjoyed that.. Hubby would make a kind of pate out of it and put it on crackers... I ate a bass caught out of the Devil's River cooked in bacon grease one time camping.. that was soo so good.. Oh and we ate shark that we caught deep sea fishing and made fajitas out of it .. good too.. Shark meat is textured like steak so it made good fajitas.. We have never tried any subscription boxes for anything and i don't think we plan to... Love to hear how yours turn out though and what you cook with it.. :) Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteLarry is not big on fish either. I wanted to try wild caught fish opposed to most stores that sell pond raised-wild caught better flavors. There is a fish store that people here really like but it is an hour drive there and back on highway-this is easier for me. anxious to try out this company-they have lots of videos and recipes and I can call them too with questions about the fish preperations.
DeleteI don't eat much fried foods at all, when I do I have a really good breading recipe that I can convert to gluten free. the shark meat sounds good that you described.
this is the first time I have ever tried a subscription box-they make it very easy to stop the boxes for how ever long you want to and then start up again. my friend just gets a couple boxes a year.
I will share about this new box
The fish sounds wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI will probably get it this week already am excited to try it Love the company so far very hands on and friendly
DeleteI hope you share a review of the box and contents after you've received it
ReplyDeleteI will for sure-just got a note it will come on thursday
DeleteI've never bought meat or fish and had it shipped to me. I don't know what some of those fish in the list are either. We have lots of fresh fish here, but they're all local. And we get frozen fish sometimes from Canada and even Iceland. I have had salmon cakes before, made with ground salmon and some type of breadcrumbs. They're good, served like burger. Enjoy your fish.. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteGood morning, I was not familiar with some of these fish either-but this company has lots of really good videos to teach us about the fish. these are mostly mild wild fish
DeleteI have never purchased meat or seafood online. We have a meat market pretty close to us so we go there once a month. We like their meat and deals. Good luck with your box. I would have thought though that King crab would be cheaper from Alaska though. That was odd. Janice
ReplyDeleteThis year has been my first time trying boxes. I didn't know the price of king crab but too costly for me for sure. the box I chose was reasonable I thought. I watched one of their you tube videos about their boxes and the portions look much larger than the one I tried first-they are shipping it to be here on thursday so will see I love salmon and in the video it looked really nice in the stores here it is all farm raised which I am not crazy about
DeleteI bought a box of halibut from the Alaska Fish Co. a few years ago. Since we went to AK in the summer of '24 we have lots of halibut and salmon left. We plan to go back next summer to restock our freezers!
ReplyDeleteGood morning hat is even better that you can fish yourself I love salmon and halibut too
DeleteKathy this sounds like a great deal for you...we don't eat a great deal of fish...enjoy salmon and get it at one of our local grocers. I hope you enjoy your box though. Also praying you didn't get hit with a tornado or big storms. It seems like there just have been so many wild ones this spring. We had 80 mile per hr. winds in our county and many lost power for a couple of days. We were blessed but it was unbelievable the strength of those winds. Will continue to be praying for you and Larry. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteGood morning thank you so much Debbie, we were fortunate and missed the hail and tornadoes that were in our area-so thankful These storms have hit StLouis area though several days in a row now
Deletehugs
I've never done fish or meat boxes. The closest I came was during Covid and getting some boxes of meal ingredients and you prepare it. Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteThis is a new idea for me too I am supposed to get my fish box tomorrow-will take photos
DeleteThanks, Kathy, for an interesting post about your experiences in ordering online, especially about the fish products. We do online ordering, mostly Amazon, for various household and other products even though we live in an area with lots of available stores. It’s usually because we can’t find a specific item and more often that it’s less costly especially with free shipping. We enjoy fish and chicken more than beef products and thankfully there are good fresh fish buys in the local supermarkets. Your upcoming order sounds like a very good deal, so I plan to check out the website and look forward to your review post.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, my first box is coming in tomorrow-I have an early dentist appt so hoping it arrives when I am back home-Larry won't be able to get it in the house and freezer.
DeleteTheir web site is full of information and recipes .Last night I did search on ebay for used books for Alaskan fish recipes-Surprised there were so many to choose from. I bought a couple
Most of the fish that wal mart sells is pond raised-and when we searched about those-ugh would not eat them-most not usa fish either. the local grocery store does have really nice shrimp and for fish boils but not usa caught fish filets.
I will share a photo of the fish when I get it-their videos all look good
I do a lot of online ordering too-more choices for where I live-I can compare prices right there on the computer-and living so rural many times less expensive as well. we have kept our sam's club membership all these years-ever since they opened-I good deals on there too for certain items
