Hellos to the T gang and all my readers
It's Saturday morning so writing this up early for Tuesday. For the T Party we gather over at Bleubeard and Elizabeth's and link up with a drink related photo in our post, and visit others on the link up.
We have spring blooms here, and another round of severe weather coming through today. Here are a few photos from early today (Saturday) Tornadoes etc are still in the forecast for the rest of the day. There are allot of boats on the lake today for the big Bass Tournament-winning fish prize is $100,000.
The skies were very black for awhile, windy with white caps on the lake-and then it left. I would not want to be on the lake during this type of weather.
We also have lovely blooms.
This first photo are dwarf size iris's I brought home from the family farm years ago in Indiana. This is the first year they are blooming well here at the lake-they got settled back in.
Last week I estimated that I had 50 bottles-I actually have around 70, with 9 more to plant.
The pink blooms are the ground cover phlox I bought from the Amish greenhouse last year
And the amaryllis has bloomed-it was slow to open up which was nice for longer lasting views.
There will be 3 blooms on this stalk
I really love this color
I also gathered dandelion flowers for my soap making-I infuse it in the soap with my lavender flowers-strain it and add the melt and pour soap to the molds. The dandelions here at the lake are large and lovely
I have always loved dandelions with their pretty yellow flowers welcoming in warmer weather.
I am still spinning, getting better at the wheel, but still not even yarn and I don't always keep the wheel moving constantly-still spinning every day to hopefully improve.
I found a bag of alpaca I had bought at one of the Fiber U events that I shared in the past of the classes I took there. I also found a big bag of small sample bits of alpaca that were for needle felting-so they were quite short-I blended them on the blending board.
I am now spinning on the wheel- white alpaca, next up a grey alpaca. I also found our (late) wolf Nikita's hair that she grew over winter-and then needed brushed out-very very short fibers and soft-I am carding that with alpaca and spinning on the drop spindle for better control. That will be an art yarn as well, will see how this looks after washed and dried-could go into a scarf. I have been able to spin it finer since this photo.
Since I took above photo-found out how to delete date and time on photos
I have been drinking my decaf coffee with whipped cream this past week, and a splash of my homemade kahlua This is a hand thrown pottery mug we bought way back before retirement I have always loved handmade pottery dishes.
That was one seriously threatening sky. Did a storm materialize? I wouldn't have wanted to be on the lake either -- but it really is a wonderful photo. The flowers are lovely and I love the idea of creeping thyme as a ground cover.
ReplyDeleteYes we did have allot of wind and t storms but no hail here thank goodness. there was hail not too far from us. This creeping thyme will have little blue flowers-says it takes a couple years to get those.
DeleteThose lake view and sky shots are simply amazing!
ReplyDeletethank you Angie
DeleteTornado-warnings and people are on your lake?! No 100,000 could make me risk my life...
ReplyDeleteWe have a wee bit of green on the trees, that´s all. Maybe I´m wrong, but this winter seems to last very long.
So nice to see all your beauties!
And soap... on Ingo´s list still. And I would help, now, that you show me how to.
Have an early happy T-day, hugs!
I thought that was crazy too-and we had white caps on the lake too most of the day-rough water. most hopefully headed toward an empty dock space for safety.
DeleteYou may just have to make the melt and pour soap-I heat mine over a double boiler (pan of water on the bottom-and another pan for the soap on top) less chance of getting it too hot and do not like using a microwave for melting either-easy to get too hot, you need a thermometer for this project and the pans just for soap making. did it come with a soap mold?
Happy T hugs from the Lake
Ingo got the ingredients from an art shop - and I bet he "buried" them somewhere never to be found again! Sad. I have soap from Sami still (handmade) ...
DeleteI will ask him again! Especially as right now a happy young mother is on TV, feeding her baby "Hipp" - some convenience food. How can a stay at home Mother (suggested in this ad) not be able to cook proper food for her own kid? I´m getting old and grumpy ;-)
hugs a crazy world we live in now
DeleteHi Kathy, thanks for sharing the wonderful photos. Those black cloudss look very threatening. Love the flowers and your bottle gardens are a wonderful idea. Your spinning looks great, too. Have a lovely week, happy T Day, hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeletethank you so much Valerie, it was black that for over half an hour-don't remember seeing it tha black before-thinking someone may have gotten a tornado haven't heard about that yet Happy T
DeleteYour flowers are weeks ahead of ours. I am just uncovering things. I put heavy cream in my coffee every morning.
ReplyDeleteYour spinning is really coming along. That is something I have never tried
Cathy
Good morning, we have had a few 80's F sprinkled in with the cold temps so allot of blooms opened up here. I just started adding in some whipped cream-good lol
DeleteSpinning is something I have tried off and on for years-always working too many hours for much craft time. I also couldn't figure out my old wheel for years-Larry helped me fix some things on it this year. for sure faster and nicer yarn than I have been achieving on the drop spindles-although I love working with those too.
Happy Week to y'all!
ReplyDeleteThose skies are dark and scary, dramatic though.
I am amazed at the number of bottles you've done. Your landscape will surely be gorgeous. Lovely flowers
yes they were dark and dramatic for sure for about an hour or so then it cleared off-then later got a bunch of t storms thankful no hail here.
DeleteI am hoping I have good luck with the flower seeds-many of them were older
Lots of interesting news Kathy. Dandelion soap and creeping thyme caught my interest.
ReplyDeletethis creeping thyme I am very happy with-it got this thick and filled in over winter
DeleteThis is such a lovely post Kathy. Those clouds in the morning photo look a little ominous, but all those flowers are so beautiful. Your lilacs are out too. Wow. I love lilacs, and they smell so wonderful. And you've been having some fiber fun too. It sounds like you've had a good week. I hope that you didn't get any bad storms and that you have/had a lovely T day too. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteHi Erika, I was so happy that there were 3 lilac bushes here at the lake house-I always had them when we lived in Illinois-there are two this color and another bush a darker purple they smell so good too.
DeleteI am really enjoying the spinning very much. we were lucky no damage here from the storms and no hail-that was a plus
I loved the sky pictures, so beautiful despite the darkness.
ReplyDeleteYour alpaca wool looks lovely!
The pancakes are making my mouth water. And there is nothing better than real maple syrup!
Happy Tea Day,
Kate
I agree only real handmade maple syrup will do. that was a cool sky to view-very black for quite awhile before it moved on
DeleteThat sky looked quite threatening. I have read about the severe weather in your area and elsewhere, it seems to be another crazy year weatherwise. This is certainly climate change and I'm doubtful that we can turn the wheel back. Your creeping thyme certainly expanded a lot. I tried it in my garden in areas where I wanted a good coverage, but it just died. Maybe it was too dry, I don't know. Beautiful flowers all around, and what a great idea to use the dandelions for soap making.
ReplyDeleteThe creeping thyme really grew over the winter cold months-I think the roots really expanded, and made this thick mat-I will be moving most of it elsewhere soon and I have at least 30 bottles I started this year. we are working on getting rid of the grass here.
Deleteits possible your area is too hot and dry. maybe it needs watered til it gets settled in.
the dandelions infused in the melted soap is really nice for the skin.
Spring is already looming in your garden. The climate will be unstable whenever there is a change of season. Beware of maple syrup because it has sugar concentration and increases weight if we overdo it.
ReplyDeleteHi I agree, this area gets allot of tornadoes and t storms during the spring months, I grew up with these storms in the state of Indiana too.
DeleteYes we know maple syrup is high in sugars-but I would much rather eat the real food over the imitation-we use it sparingly over the pancakes as well.
enjoy your week
Hi, Kathy. Your amaryllis blooms are gorgeous. Now, I have never thought of dandelions as pretty, but you make them seem so. Lovely yarns. I never knew how yarn was made and what it was made of. So interesting.
ReplyDeleteI always have loved dandelions here at the lake they are really pretty-deep yellows and large. yarn can be handspun from many different types of fibers-many variaties of sheep produce all sorts of different wool yarns, alpaca, camel, then one can spin silk, flax, cotton-endless possibilities
DeleteBeautiful blooms including pretty and lovely Lilacs. The sky views remind us how unpredictable the weather is. Glad to read about your spinning experience. It sounds interesting to make your own yarn. Thanks for sharing such details.
ReplyDeleteHave a happy T day!
Thank you so much, we are finally getting warmer sunny days for the blooms to flower-so pretty. spring months here in my area usually have several storms and tornadoes, the sky was really dramatic.
DeleteI have been enjoying spinning-finally getting better at it
Happy T wishes
Oh my, dear Kathy, there is so much to love about this post. Your pictures, which I presume were taken with your new camera are wonderful. I am in awe of your work with fibers. What beautiful yarns you are spinning. And, of course, I love seeing all the flowers you have blooming. I love the amaryllis so beautiful! We had a terrific hail storm a few days ago that beat up my flowers, but they looked a little better today.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, yes these are with my new camera-I think I have most of it figured out for now.We are really enjoying the blooms on the amaryllis-and they are lasting a long time too-the third on will fully open by tomorrow I think.
Deleteso sorry you got that hail-I am glad we got missed as we don't have a way to park the cars in the garage (no room in there) glad the flowers are bouncing back
Your camera takes lovely photos, Kathy. Glad you like it.
ReplyDeleteYou got rain, we got hail and rain. Twice, even. My 80s F went to 58 F on Sunday. That's why we were all bundled up on the porch.
LOVE your flowers and blooms. Picking dandelion flowers means less dandelions in the future. They really ARE a pretty flower. Never thought to add them to the soap I make (lye based).
Your weather must be a LOT warmer than mine, even though I am in Zone 5. I brought my thyme inside, but I am sure it's dead. It never did much this last year, so I hope to get some this year that will grow. I even followed the instructions to place it in a clay pot and water well daily.
I miss my lilac bush. It always smelled so good. I hope to buy a couple this year. Yours are beautiful. I can almost smell them through the screen (grin).
How great you were able to spin Nikita's fur with alpaca. I bet it is really soft.
Now I want pancakes and real maple syrup. It sounds wonderful and looks good, too. Love both those pottery mugs. They are really lovely.
Thanks for sharing your awesome flowers, your seeds, your thyme, your scary skies, and your drinks with us for T this Tuesday, dear Kathy.
Hi Elizabeth, we just missed the hail-happy about that-as it can be very destructive-our cars sit outdoors.
DeleteThere are sooo many dandelions here-I really do enjoy them-I will lose most of them as we working on getting rid of the grass and bringing in river rocks-big job for us for sure.
I was so thrilled to have lilac bushes here-I love them too.
I had forgotten about Nikita's fur that I had saved-I am working on getting through my fiber stash now and getting it spun up.
Larry wants pancakes every week now-haha they are sooo good especially made from scratch with the maple syrup.
Happy T and for hosting
Lowering clouds! We've had threatening storms, but today we're expecting sunshine and a high of 80. More storms predicted, though. Your spring blooms are lovely -so much of the thyme! It's one of my favorites. My creeping phlox is only now showing signs of blooming. Happy T Tuesday!
ReplyDeletethe thyme grew amazingly well so happy about that. we cooled down quite a bit after that storm went through I wasn't ready for 80's just yet haha
DeleteSpring is so far ahead of where we are. Your garden looks lovely. Those clouds look really menacing. I wouldn't want to be on the lake with the threat of weather. No matter how big the prize money for catching a fish. Happy T Day
ReplyDeletewe had a few 80 plus degrees here made things bloom-now we are back to cooler weather-I agree I would have gotten off the lake for sure with t storms coming in Happy T
DeleteThe thyme grew so well. I'm struggling to grow just one plant!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post. Your photos are great. Is that because of the new camera? I'm impressed.
ReplyDeleteI love lilac. they are flowering here too. They are so fragrant.
I have never attempted spinning but I would think that practice makes perfect. So keep on spinning!
Your garden and its flowers look really lovely. Everything you showed has picked up really well.
Happy T-Day (belated)
Hugs,
Lisca
Oh Kathy your photo of the lake with the pink sky is so gorgeous. Wow you are so busy friend. I always feel so motivated when I visit you. Made dandelion jelly a couple of years ago. It was time consuming because the green at the base had to be removed. It was good though. As for your spinning...the alpaca wool looks so soft. Wish I could stop over for some of those delicious blueberry pancakes. Now that is a wonderful treat for sure with maple syrup. Take care and enjoy all the beautiful spring flowers that are blooming. My lilacs have not began yet but have a gorgeous coral quince shrub that is inspiring me to paint. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteOh I love your view! And they blooms. All our trees/bushes in TN have bloomed out already. Now we wait to see the summer blooms of the flowers. My iris is doing well, but then again, iris always does good. How does your creeping thyme looking the rest of the summer? I have a wicked hill in my front yard and I am looking for something to put there that would help having to cut that area.
ReplyDeleteHi Pam, The thyme you see here I grew from seed in the bottles-we get really hot summers here in sw Missouri and it did fine when I got it out of the bottles and planted here-they needed to get out of the bottles and we had such a rough spring last year I didn't get them where I wanted. this are suppose to be able to handle full sun to partial sun. where they are planted now they do get allot of sun.
Deleteearly this year spring-I need to get all the oak leaves off them as soon as possible-otherwise it will kill the plants.
I will post an update once they are planted.
Your spring flowers are looking good and the thyme is amazing ...
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week.
All the best Jan
Great assortment of photos.
ReplyDeleteDear Kathy, I don't want to be at the lake in this weather either. I hope everything went well! Funny, you can also see dwarf irises in my blog today - they grow in different colors on a special lean meadow in the nature reserve. It's great how beautiful your flowers are, even the lilac already - it still needs some time here in Austria.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're busy spinning on the wheel again! It's great that you can also spin the hair of your wolf Nikita - that's something special and valuable when the hair of a beloved animal is spun.
All the best from Austria! 🌷☘️🌷
Hugs, Traude 😘
