Art Practice with Inks & Linking up with Rain

Early yesterday evening, while waiting for the Blues hockey game, I decided to do a little art practice.

I used the blackberry ink to cover the background, let dry and then grabbed dip pen and iron gall ink, and a flower photo for inspiration

The ink blob to the far right-was just that-a huge drop of ink fell from the pen-so I just blotted it and kinda looks like a heart now

When I first started drawing with the iron gall ink it was picking up some of the blackberry ink from the background. Then when I went over it in areas all black ink showed

I decided to add a little bird to a branch

The other day when it was warmer, we grabbed our electric smoker and cleaned it up in preperation to smoke a small whole turkey. We made a brine that Larry has used forever when he would smoke pheasants that he hunted for and also fish. So we have the turkey in the brine now (2 gallons of water, canning salt, brown sugar and pickling spices)  We have a large flat rock that we brought with us from the woods to weigh down the whole turkey.  Hopefully we can set this up to smoke Friday and Saturday as after that bitter cold will be returning for over a week-ugh

chips soaking for the smoke-these are Jack Daniels whisky barrel chips

The  smoker set up near the door, and a plug just inside-perfect to watch over it We got lots of rain here at the lake.  No snow though as some areas near us had-all this rain will change over to ice-not good either.

Happy Mid Week I am linking up this post with Rain's Art and Dinner Date  tomorrow

  1. These are lovely, Kathy.

We just got a smoker. I thought it was weird to keep it outside. 😂 But I guess that is the thing to do!

  2. Another great art journal page. I am loving your flowers and thinking I need to join you in your daily practice. You and Larry really know what you are doing when it comes to smoking meats. You will enjoy this for the upcoming very cold week. I know you will be tuning in for the Chiefs' game this weekend. Yay!

  5. You look like you are really enjoying your inks. We are getting another snow storm right now that is suppose to turn to ice, just the worst. I have never smoked anything. I love the smokey taste but my husband not so much.

  7. Kathy,

Good-morning and thank you for dropping by my blog. I haven't done too much drawing with ink. Most of what I do is either pencil and sketch book or my iPad and Apple pencil. I lack the confidence to draw anything without an eraser to fix my mistakes. I wish I could, though. I like the look of ink and watercolor. In the past I sketched a card design in pencil, then went over it with ink and used watercolor pencils. That was a lot of fun. Mmm, smoked turkey! That sounds yummy!! Incidentally, your gravatar doesn't have your blog linked to it, so I had to revisit Rain to to get to your site. I was happy you were right after me on the list. :) Have a doodletastic day!

He and his brother and friend are driving 2 hours South to Brackettville... to play on their 18 hole course there.. It will be a little chilly for them... Me i'm staying home and warm in the craftroom.. :) Hugs! deb

    1. thanks Deb, the botanical inks I will be making now will include gum arabic which is a binder for the ink-think that will be nicer to work with for ink or paint sounds like a fun day out for the men. I am not big on the brine do to the salt content but it is a good project for my husband too-brings bad good memories for him enjoy your craft day hugs

  13. I love the little bird ... he pulls the whole picture together. I have never smoked anything so this is all new to me. Looks a little complicated, but I am guessing the end results make it all worth while. Love your eagles ... we had eagles in our trees at the lake before we had to move. I miss the nature of the lake life. Lovely post, Kathy. I remember living further south and the rain and the ice. We used to skate in our back yard because everything was covered with ice. Anyway, just don't fall if the rain turns to ice ... and stay warm :)

    1. thanks about my little bird-I am still working at drawing. oh that would have been fun to skate in your back yard. when we get ice I don't go anywheres now we have a steep set of steps and a hill to walk up to get our mail-if ice I don't get out don't want to break something that is for sure-hugs

  15. I have a smoker that is NOT electric. I had a friend who had a cherry tree he cut down. He gave me rings of cherry tree branches I use to soak for a day before it goes in the smoker. I have added wine before, especially if it some someone left, since I don't drink wine. When I lived in MO, my company gave us a turkey every year at Thanksgiving, which I smoked. However, I usually smoked a whole salmon and cut it into quarters as Christmas gifts. That was before salmon cost more than a small car. I use briquettes and cherry for salmon, apple wood for cheese, and usually hickory for turkey. It's been several years since I've smoked anything. Thanks for the memories.

    1. Hi Elizabeth, Larry would love a wood smoker again, someone was just throwing the one we have out so he rescued it-works pretty good-yum I would love to taste your smoked salmon-I have those woods too so fun to try different ones. I learned hickory can be tricky-not too much or the food will get bitter. we have one more warmish day tomorrow before the deep freeze returns-hoping it will finish up tomorrow
