Good morning Monday
This is the first year that my amaryllis bulbs did not bloom in the house late winter or early spring.
So after the last freeze when I put the two big clay pots outdoors I began watering them. One of the pots are young plants. Well just before all the rain -one of those young bulbs produced a lovely huge bloom-but on a very very short stem near the bulb.
Have you ever seen this before??

DeleteThat amaryllis is beautiful. I've never tried to grow them.
ReplyDeleteI love growing them-brightens up late winters or early springs blooming in the house usually they come in different colors too

DeleteI have never had good luck with indoor plants and when I got cats did not want them eating them anyway and getting sick. That is a beautiful flower and I have never seen one bloom that low. Janice
ReplyDeleteI don't have indoor plants either-I bring these in before the fall freeze-and then don't water them-let them go dormant-and then usually they will start to produce leaves around feb or march and then I water them-they have their flowers-and I take them outside for rain water and sun til before the first fall freeze-and start the cycle again. this was unusual for me-this huge bloom close to the bulb
DeleteHow interesting that your amaryllis bloomed in summer. Maybe it doesn't like Christmas or winter. I can't say I blame it for not liking winter. Grin. It's beautiful Kathy. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteOnly thing I think of is that I did not have these placed in a dark spot this time when I brought them in before the freeze in the fall. the clay pots were very heavy when I brought them indoors.

DeleteYears ago... when we were raising our daughter in TX before we moved to CA and AR etc... i had a lovely window over my sink in the kitchen with a lovely little shelf for plants... and i had an Amaryllis in the window.. It was very happy there.. I did not try to manipulate it to get it to bloom etc... Sometime in the Spring it would die back on its own then late Spring , early Summer it would bloom naturally.. But i have to tell you Kathy i don't think i've EVER seen one bloom on such a short stalk!!! wowzer! Beautiful though.. Tell me do you fertilize it? Mine are all fixing to go in a closet... I've read to put them in the dark and no water from July 4 then pull them out on Halloween... Thank you Kathy for the 4th of July card!!! :) I said to myself 'Darn'! i should have made 4th of July cards!!! lol Hugs! deb

DeleteYes i put them in the dark too when I bring them in-and then they will sprout leaves a few months after around Jan or feb even into march I water them well and then they usually bloom. these bulbs did not do that this time but the pots are so heavy now I didn't have them in the dark either..
I have been growing these for many years and have never had a bloom like before. It is even bigger now after the photo very pretty.

I also do not do well with house plants, which is why we don't have any in our apt. Years ago, my husband had great luck with a spider plant and it had lots of "babies." I had only 1 amaryllis plant which was a birthday gift from a neighbor years ago. I think that it bloomed and then I discarded the plant. Glad to see how well yours did even if such a short bloom, still lovely 😊
ReplyDeleteHi, I don't do house plants either these bulbs come indoors as the freeze will kill them-they usually go dormant for a few months and then bloom indoors
DeleteI have not had them that short. But fun they are blooming in the summer.

I have never had one bloom in the summer either-usually in the house during winter or just before spring. the bloom is so large-amazing

ReplyDeleteGood morning These are fun to grow usually here see them in the stores around Christmas time-the bulbs will bloom for several years and make new bulbs too
