Going through Clothes

 Good morning Monday,

After yesterday's evening storms-with high winds and lots more rain-we have a lovely sunny day today.

I did spend a lot of time working in the flower gardens yesterday and ended with digging up that chocolate mint-a good start on that project and overall a productive day. Of course I did too much and feeling it this morning-sigh.

Not sure why but it popped into my head to go through our clothes this morning. We really do not have much in clothes like some do-but I ended up with a nice pile to take to the animal shelter's thrift store. I have lost over 10 pounds-and going forward plan to not put that weight back on. I started with my jeans drawer-only had 3 jeans and 1 jeans shorts that fit now-so that started my pile. Added to the pile tops that I just don't plan on wearing any more. Since we finally have a closet here at the lake house-I went through everything that was on hangers and discarded lots. Larry's clothes too that I know he won't wear any more-I asked him first.  This was just a spur of the moment purge-doesn't that feel good?   I called the thrift shop just now and yes they are taking items this week-they don't open til 10 am though but I will be going one day this week, and they will take any clothes not just summer so I like that. This animal shelter and store are just outside of Laurie and just inside of Sunrise Beach-so considering not a far drive.

Of course I will need to check out their store too smiles.

Many years ago we had gifted Larry's father a wool sweater with leather patches that zipped in the front for his fishing trips. We splurged and bought it from Orvis. Several years ago Larry's sister brought some clothes from his father-after he had passed-to see if Larry wanted any of them. In the pile was that sweater. It was well loved for sure, but he never told us how much he enjoyed it, there is an area that needs to be repaired-any suggestions on how to mend a wool sweater?   Interesting- in the pile that she brought was another sweater similar-very well worn but not the same quality at all and full of stains-I cut that one up for sewing projects   I looked for a photo online and found this one on Etsy-worn and still carries a hefty price-even used  I just checked Orvis online and they no longer sell this one. We bought this over 20-30 years ago, so interesting still available used online elsewhere.

Larry's physical therapy went well the last month, problem with Medicare though is they do not stick with physical therapy twice a week-that is the only way one gets really good benefit from it.  He sees a physical therapist 3 weeks in a row and then his supervisor comes out the 4th week. He did that today and Larry explained this issue-he totally agreed and will continue to apply for the twice a week physical therapy I am grateful that he was able to get this again-they come to the house.

Happy Monday and have a good week!!

  2. Hi Kathy, congratulations on your weight loss, dear friend! And so lovely and kind of you to donate some of your no longer used or needed clothing to a worthwhile charity. I wish we had such shops here in Montreal. I mean yes, we do have them...such as the Salvation Army, but none that I know of that focus on animals. I kind of wish we did, because there are so many (especially) cats and dogs that are brought to the SPCA each year, especially around moving time, either because the new apartment the people are moving to doesn't allow pets or because the pet owners can no longer afford the upkeep with food and especially the vet costs! It's a shame. I will see if I can encourage the SPCA to perhaps open a charity shop that will help this organization and the care and re homing of these precious animals.
Thank you so much for sharing, I love your posts, and I appreciate the font you use as well. It is large enough and easy to read. Wishing you a wonderful and blessed week.

    1. Good morning, when we retired from northern Illinois down to rural Missouri-I discovered that this area supports several animal shelter's thrift shops. These organizations get a lot of donations due to their care for animals-so it is a really good cause, and people love thrift shops too.
Perhaps you can influence them to do this too.
I am happy that you let me know you like my script. Here in Missouri and probably other states as well-- have stopped teaching students to write and to read script-this is unbelievable to me that kids now days do not know how write so unacceptable-one of the reasons I changed to script here.
You have good and blessed week as well-hugs

  3. Kathy glad to read you survived the storms and had a good day in the garden. I like the idea of donating clothes for the animal shelter. We have a used store called Browse and Buy...the proceeds are used for Hospice. It too is a good cause. Well rest up and don't work too hard. I am off to read your previous post. Hugs!

  5. That is a great sweater I have no idea how to fix it.
I wonder why my husband gets physical therapy 2x a week for his back? His gap insurance is very very good he still gets it through his former employer.
So glad your husband is getting some help though and are they giving him exercises they gave him to do on his own? (they did my husband)
    It feels good to purge.

    1. Yes he does exercise here at home, but he is fearful of falling, the bad leg just gives out with no warnings. Medicare paid for a lot the first year the last time he got physical therapy and this time around they start out with 2 times a week and then cut it back to once a week-which is not as helpful I retired from the bell att phone company and always had excellent insurance. last year they switched to their medicare advantage plan-it pays better than most but not as good a insurance as we had before from them

    2. this is all paid by medicare though not the medical insurance part of it

  6. We too have to do periodic purging of not just clothes, but stuff. There’s a couple thrift stores we bring things to depending on what’s being donated and kf course we also buy stuff there, candles are my favorite. Congrats on the weight loss which is ongoing with myself. Good to read that Larry’s therapist is helpful and coming to the house is a big plus too. Hope you rested up from the gardening work, Kathy.

    1. Awesome that you got some rain. I have not been to a goodwill in years-growing up my Mom took us kids there all the time-she mostly bought 100% wool clothes to felt down, cut in strips for rug hooking projects. I think there was a big one in Springfield mo but nothing near us.
the resale shops are really good here. there is a big one we went to a lot but it is an hour's drive away now in traffic-no thanks haha.
I did find two shorts and one cool pair of jeans that was made with lots of patches. I guess my size right now is around 8 at least what was available at the resale shop I fit into 8's. I tried on about 10 jean shorts and kept a couple. no tops that I liked. I always need hangars they had those plastic ones for .50 cents for 10 of them.
I felt good taking two big bags of clothes in and came away with a small wal mart bag. there were a set of glasses I liked that had fish on them but my cupboards are full so I did good not bringing them home-plus I do love my handmade pottery glasses and dishes the best.
very hot and humid here today. rain coming in though

    2. We are having a Fall like day in June... I'll take it... 78 for a high! and low 60's for the low tonight... then tomorrow back up to 90.... Today is a grandma day.. might be a good day for the park or ride a bike... with the cooler temps.. Hugs! deb

    3. Yes take advantage of the cooler weather-we are hot and humid again for a few days before more rain. I did a good one early this morning. I was weed eating up by the mailbox and near my car-and I guess hit a rock that blew out my back window-a huge noise too-glass everywhere I recently met one of our neighbors and asked her if she could help me-drop off my car and ride back home with her-and pick me up to get it back tomorrow or friday-that went well too much for Larry in this heat

    4. Wow! That must have been something... A few weeks ago i kicked up a rock and hit myself in the head! I had a lump and black and blue for over a week! Sigh... but somebodys gotta do it.. maybe i should wear my bike helmet...lol...

    5. wow that could have been bad too-if you have a helmet a good idea-smiles there are a lot of rocks here too. got a lot grass cut this morning one large battery and one small one-raining very lightly so got a bunch done. I usually can only handle the large battery at one session. I got a call early this morning that my car is done already-but my neighbor is working today

    6. My friend got her days switched she volunteers at that animal shelter's thrift store so I got my car this morning-awesome

  10. Sorry this took so long for me to visit but it's been busy. And big congrats on losing 10 pounds. That's exciting. And it feels good to clean out some things, doesn't it? And donating them is always good too. Hope you're having a good week. hugs-Erika

    1. No worries at all Erika, this is a busy time of year too and online-one is never later-smiles. Yes it felt so good to go through our clothes that we were not wearing and take them where they can do some good. and only came home with a couple of things.
Looks like some of the rain has moved out-hoping to get work outdoors before it gets too hot

  11. I hope all goes well with the PT issue. You're right -- you need at least twice a week supervised and then the home stuff independently. It IS a good feeling to rid oneself of old clothes. It always takes me awhile because I find things I forgot I had and have to try on to see if they fit again. (I love it when they do!)

    1. I agree with the PT medicare won't approve it most of the time sadly.
It was a good feeling to get rid of two big bags of clothes we don't wear anymore. I got rid of lots of jeans that no longer fit, and brought back just one jeans, but found two shorts

  12. Chocolate mint! I need to ask for that at our nursery! Here it´s still too cold, 48F.
I need to get rid of my clothes, too. Working/studying from home I wear the same anyways. But studies make me soooo tired.
Hope Larry keeps on making progress. Health systems are bad everywhere it seems!
Ingo promised to get an app with my doc and since we are married he needs to take him in.
Met neighbor W yesterday - he had to wait not too long for my new doc, yippeee. He´s 85 and his doc retires. She never checked him, just prescribed the same old meds... in her defense... too many patients!
To better times, and warmer ones, hugs to you and the lake!

    1. Good to hear from you Iris-I just wrote you a letter tonight-will mail it tomorrow. we never had a lot of clothes-when I worked for phone co as an operator we didn't hve to dress up so just ware jeans and tops. felt good to go through and get rid of two big bags of clothes we don't wear--I pretty much wear the same too-I needed a few new tops but didn't see anything I would wear. our medical here in the states has really gone down hill here in the states-in my area now they have shortages for family doctors. I want a real doctor too not a nurse practioner they do not have as much schooling and training but they use them to fill in like doctors-not good.
Hope you get warmer weather soon-hugs

  13. We recently discarded lots of old clothes from our closets. I kept anything that was made of soft cotton or linen that I might use in sewing projects. I have made great progress this week in my flower gardens, but my back has not been happy. I shy away from planting any kind of mint unless I put it in a pot. A cat mint in an old tub helps keep the deer away.

    1. Good morning Mary-I have done the same cut up cottons, linen, wool, silk for sewing projects, I did a lot of jeans too and still have a big stash. I have to be careful about my back too. hank you about the tip of the cat mint and deer-we do have deer here that walk through-even my garden here. I woke up too early again just now-and its raining again hugs
