This afternoon I got back out digging up the chocolate mint. I have never seen mint with such large root systems, and packed in like a brick almost-a huge job for sure. Never could dig this out without all the rain we have been having.
I made progress yesterday and I was back out a bit this afternoon. The runners are soooo long that I yank a section out and then dig out the root system. It is raining again so needed to come in. I did grab my camera before it started really raining hard.
That just soil area is part of the area I have been working on. This mint is mixed in with Larry's shallots and those gladiolas-too, so that will be a chore to get the mint out in those areas I may just dig up the gladiolas first and then dig up the mint and replant them
It doesn't look like much but all that blank soil was solid mint.
around the garden-with all the rain ,all of the perennials I grew from seed and planted two years ago are now huge.
Do any of you know what plant this is below? Two years ago this was a tiny little plant that I bought on ebay. I think it was one the hummingbirds like-Mary you bought one too do you remember the name?? thanks
That tube sticking out directs the rain water down to the lake and in our basement-like it did when we first moved here.
This year the deer or the chipmunks keep digging up what I plant in my big copper pot (above) I just replanted it again with some flowers I grew from seed.
I have a few large clumps of yarrow
Below these pretty purple ones are mixed in with the shallots I really like these
This geranium seems happy in this huge pot
Below flower seeds I scattered last week-mostly zinnias, I did the same with saved marigold seeds today
You got a lot done! -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThank you, if I keep at it a little each day-I will get it done
DeleteI believe the purple flower is a salvia. Kudos to you for tackling that mint. It can be very invasive. Janice
ReplyDeletethank you we had that water leak from the well last year, and so much rain this year that mint just went bonkers haha but all that water really benefited the perennials I planted too-amazed how large they are two years later
DeleteThat one plant reminds me of what we call a butterfly plant. (Buddleia) The flowers are similar.
ReplyDeletethank you
DeleteWell done on the garden digging. I can't do that anymore -- if I did, I know just what I'd dig up! It's looking great.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, I can only dig if I am sitting down on the ground-I keep an old piece of carpet to sit on that works well. and I use a short small shovel. the next day it usually gets to my back a bit but there is no way I can use my knees to dig with a normal size shovel-those days are over-smiles
DeleteLove seeing your garden Kathy... that chocolate mint made so much work for you... I think all that water from the broken pipe made those mints with super strong roots... otherwise it probabaly wouldn't be so difficult... ? Those purple flowers you like.. are they chive? I'm calling a day off today and cleaning inside and playing in craft room... The yard can grow an inch or two without me...lol Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteGood Morning-yes you are right Last year we had that huge water leak from the well and so far we are still getting lots of rain too-so this has turned into a huge job for sure.
DeleteNo those purple balls are on very long thin stems-they are a perennial but do not remember what they are. I think I bought these as bulbs at wal mart a couple years ago.
sometimes we need a break, I found a small bush or tree stump where I was working on the mint-took a bit as it was rotting away but still really stuck in the ground-that was a job to remove. We are very humid today-more rain coming in but I am tired today. You need a day off too hugs
Oh my goodness-MINT! I have had a battle with a tiny little clump I bought at Walmart a year ago. I think I finally got it all dug out and I put it in a big ole pot far away from other plants! I thought I'd snip off some when I want mint tea, but I will NEVER plant mint in the ground again. Is your plant in question a butterfly bush? Kinda looks like it but not sure. Stay safe in the hot weather. We are going to be in the mid nineties next week. We have rain every week-sometimes 3 or 4 days each week. Had flooding too. I wish I could show my garden photos but I'm not hooked up with email on my phone. Not sure if I want to do that...
ReplyDeleteGood morning Debra, this mint was out of control in a huge way-I will not ever plant it again either not even a pot-because the runners can grow long and root in the garden soil eventually. Thank you I did plant butterfly bush as I remember starting that from seeds
DeleteThe rain has finally stopped here but today going foward mid 90's everday for at least 10 days. I will be watering my perennials soon-smiles.
I have a camera that I load up to my computer-I don't have a cell phone so don't know how that works.
Happy Summer!
