I had a busy day today. Had to go to town this morning for a part for our water, cut some grass, and spent an hour pulling that mint that totally took over my perennial garden. Turned out the abundance of water was coming from the well-after fixing everything else about the too much water issue-- it was the well.
So the mint took over everything and pretty much choked out most all of my perennial plants that I had started from seed. Such a bummer for me. I did find our shallots-the last of what Larry's Grandpa brought back from Israel-so happy we didn't lose those.
This photo you can see the shallots, and a couple of perennials on either side that I don't know what they are
Thanks for the mint warning I should pull mine out before it becomes a problem -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeletemost mints can get out of hand fast-we had a water leak so that made it much worse--most people contain it like in a big pot or put in an area where it can't travel
DeleteMint is one of the fastest-growing plants I know.
DeleteI agree and this was worse do to the water problem from the well-some of roots I will need to dig out with a shovel Happy Monday
DeleteWhat caught my eye with your picture of the garden was the stone wall behind it. Love it! So much work and craftsmanship go into building those. Hope your lift works!
ReplyDeletegood afternoon, I love the rock too. there is also a short rock wall down below this garden area-near the front of the house too-on both sides
DeleteThat is quite a job taking the mint out of the garden I was warned early on about mint and I am not that fond of mint so I never planted it.
ReplyDeleteYou have a lot of work ahead of you.
I do hope that lift works for both of you
cathy
This is quite the job, and some of the roots are very deep will need to get a shovel to get it all out. hoping the "boys' get the lift working too
DeleteWe had a gorgeous day too. Sounds like you've been busy, and it's always good to get the garden ready for a winter's rest and then another spring revival. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteagree-hugs
DeleteYAY on the surviving shallots! My Mom´s wood-strawberries say hello!!!!
ReplyDeleteHugs, it seems better times are up at the lake :-)
shallots say hello back-hugs
DeleteOh i hope that lift works for you. Sending you all the luck! I've always heard to put mint in a pot because it likes to take over... i guess they weren't kidding... I would be bummed too after all that work you did on your perennials. I hope you'll try again.. We have been chopping down the SunFlowers this past week or two as they go to seed... I have less SunFlowers this year than last but i still have alot.. The Grandlittles will be so surprised when they come and they are gone.. The weather has been lovely here.. Highs in the 80's but thats not til late afternoon.. I've been painting fence... should get that done today.. You should have a large envelope in your mailbox Thursday... fingers crossed.... Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteI was really bumbed about losing so many of my plants especially the bee balm-sigh. I will replace that plant and see if I still have some seeds left for others.
DeleteHe is finding out the electric is in very very bad shape-and our guys drove hours to pick it up--sigh I suggested Larry should write him about it.
we almost hit 90 yesterday-wow I did get lots done outdoors-finished up with the grass cutting, and got all the mint up except I have a lot of deep roots to dig up after we get some rain.
Oh wow I love happy mail-hugs
Yes mint is very invasive. My daughter has it. I would just keep it in a pot at my old house. I love it in the salad I make. Hope Larry's lift works out. Fingers crossed. Janice
ReplyDeleteyes and some mints worse than others-I got it all up except I will need to dig out the deep roots after the next rain-or it will all come up againugh.
Deletehe is finding out about numerous issues-ugh
Mint has taken over my garden too. I feel your pain haha. I brought it into my kitchen but I don't have enough recipes that call for mint to use it all. Hate to see it go to waste.
ReplyDeleteI had soooo much this was chocolate mint. I probably had at least 2 bushels of it haha. one year years ago when I was doing a lot of canning-I had made a mint sauce with the choc.mint and canned it in small jars-it was good. this was just too much to deal with it. I kept a small patch of it on the other side of the big tree stump that won't get in the way but fill in. I still need to go back and dig up the deep roots or it will all come back again-I need some rain first to do that if you like teas you can dry your mint and preserve some that way
