Hi everyone,
Thought I would pop back in and connect with the T group this week.
I had really needed a break for a bit from my social media sites. On Facebook I do not post much there any more, but I do enjoy the groups. I have been posting a bit on my blog here a couple times a week and visiting.
I am getting back to my weaving again which I am very excited about. If interested I finished and mailed off the handwoven shawl. I was hoping she would share a photo that I could then share here but she has not. My friend is recovering from a severe stroke she had a couple years ago and has had to re learn many things. She did write to me that she loved her shawl. I made this shawl large, long and cozy.
My loom is now set up to weave 6 kitchen towels in a twill from the Viking era around the 900's. This is a much finer weave sett than I am used to weaving recently. I have woven around 12 inches so far. Each towel will be 28 inches in length. I will be changing up the yarn-weft-that I will be weaving with to make the towels a bit different. I just found some white yarn in my stash that I will do a burn test to determine if it is cotton or not. I posted several videos on how I set up my 4 harness loom for this towel project-you can find links at the bottom of my blog page in labels. For my next weaving project I really want to make some sort of clothing for myself-will post more on that once I decide what I want to make as I have several ideas in the works.
Searching-- these little looms come in different sizes and shapes and if you are handy can make your own
and here is a pinterest link full of ideas
Over the weekend I created a journal page with the theme Language at AJJ This theme intrigued me. At first I was thinking language of weaving-and was looking to see if I had a magazine cut out of a spider web-I do have a couple stamps, but then I ran into this photo and thought perfect.
I decided on Language of birds
I first glued down some packing paper that I love using for a little texture. Deb had sent me a wine label that I really wanted to add to this, but I needed to keep cutting it down and use just the tree. The tree was too large too so what I cut off I just added back in to the left bottom of tree. I also added a scrap I had of an eco printed paper that I had cut down when making cards.
This turned out to be a fun page to create, especially since I have not made anything in my mixed media journals for awhile. This journal book is now down to around 3 more entries.
I started back up a weekly event which I usually post on Fridays--Cast Iron Saturdays--where I will share information about cast iron and mostly recipe links for cooking or baking with cast iron-in/on your stoves or outdoors with coals. I know several of you have mentioned that you no longer can handle the heaviness of cast iron-but many of the recipes will also adapt to other cookware if you enjoy trying out new recipes.
For my beverage share I took a photo of the last piece of lemon meringue pie with my decaf coffee and whipped cream for breakfast over the weekend. We love pie for breakfast. (smiles)
One early day last week when the light was just beginning to come in Larry took this photo His little camera does a better job with evening or early morning photos then mine does. This came out so beautiful and these views only last a very few minutes so have to grab the camera quick
Happy T Everyone
and as Ellen always says be Kind out there.
Kathy, I love your shawl. I am sure your friend will love it, too. Weaving is a great hobby. I do not have a big loom, like yours, but I do have a lot of little looms. Some bought, some made by me.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful page, my friend. And a gorgeous photo. As for the pie, who doesn't like pie for breakfast? Ha ha! Kisses!
I know pie for breakfast is perfect isn't it? hugs
DeleteThere is so much one can make on little looms-there is a magazine out there not too just for little looms. I was in love with those tops
Your weaving is so much fun, and the results just fantastic. We used to make something similar to the pin looms at school for the kids, they loved using them. Great photo of the lake from your hubby. Happy T day, I'm craving that pie again! Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteI think these little looms offer so many possibilities and you can take it with you like knitting or crochet.
DeleteThis pie was a real treat as I had not made for long time.
Ooh! That red wrap looks do-able - love the little loom - might have to investigate! I love the birds on your page - it looks as though some bad language may have been used!! Love the wine label trend your eco printed paper that you have used. A lovely entry for Elle's theme, so pleased you made this for AJJ. What a fabulous sunset over the lake. Hugs, Chrisx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Chris-I love this red wrap too, and in the article they had a few others really nice made with the little pin loom.
DeleteI enjoyed making this page for AJJ birds do have their own language for sure. Happy T
The weaving photos are great, especially the one showing the most diamond pattern! I’ve done pin loom weaving, and it is fun. I only created one piece. It was very loosely woven, more loose than I wanted, but that was because my husband made my loom. I suggested how many nails to use, and there were not enough for a tighter weave. If interested in pursuing this craft, I’d suggest buying a loom which I saw in our local weaving and yarn shop.
ReplyDeletethanks so much for sharing this about pin looms I think it would be better to buy one too I discovered I have one of these 4" pin looms in my stash that I had picked up years ago at the consignment shop we used to shop at allot.
DeleteLove this post - but... the last picture steals the whole show!!!
ReplyDeleteSooo beautiful! Aw, lucky you, this sure is a great place to live!
Thanks Iris-that was a gorgeous view and photo-we are blessed to be able to enjoy views of the lake every day
DeleteYou packed a LOT into this post, Kathy. I;m in awe of the shawl, but I look forward to seeing the tea towels when they are finished.
ReplyDeleteI like how you represented language by using the language of birds. That is sweet. Thank you so much for sharing this with us at Art Journal Journey using Elle's theme.
I'm also thrilled you are sharing a drink with us this week. Who doesn't love pie and lemon is one of my favorites. Even your decaf coffee looks decadent with the whipped cream. Thanks for joining us for T this week, dear.
Larry's photo is quite impressive, too.
Yes I thought I would do a big catch up for T I am enjoying these weaving these towels with the finer towels, will give me practice working with finer threads when I make fabric for clothing soon.
DeleteThe topic for AJJ was on mind to figure what to create with it-was fun
I just needed a break from T for awhile-thank you Elizabeth
Your weaving looks amazing and that shawl is gorgeous! I have a small rigid heddle loom that I like to use sometimes to try out new patterns etc. I like your take on the challenge, with the language of birds. That bird on the left definitely has something to say lol. Thanks for joining me for the Language theme at Art Journal Journey this month Elle xx
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome-I enjoyed figuring out this challenge
DeleteI never thought of using a rigid heddle loom to figure out patterns-thanks I want to get into weaving fabric for clothing and they all say sample sample haha I don't like sampling but I think it would be important for clothing
DeleteWonderful posting!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much-glad you enjoyed-hugs
DeleteWow Kathy, let me start with that beautiful sunset photo. It's spectacular. Your weaving is really wonderful. I like the pattern and colors and you are very good at it. Your also created a great art journal page. I like the idea of the language of birds. They do talk up a storm, don't they? Thanks for sharing with us at Art Journal Journey. Glad to see you back at T. HAve a great one. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Erika, yes Larry captured a gorgeous sunset. thank you I think I picked up sense of colors from my Mom and her Mom. and later in life, I was always helping a friend with choosing fabrics to go together for her quilts. Yes birds can be very talkative-hugs
DeleteSo glad you popped in for Tea Day!
ReplyDeleteYour weaving is Gorgeous! I love the pattern that you have chosen. I hope that you get to make the shawl. It looks difficult but will be a masterpiece when complete.
Your lemon meringue pie looks fabulous! I can't eat dairy anymore but I am craving whipped cream.
Lovely journal page and I love the birds. It is nice to get back into something that we have put aside for a while. And then I always wonder why it took me so long.
What a beautiful sunset to have outside your window.
Happy Tea Day,
Kate
Weaving> How come I didn't know you are a weaver? I can knit and crochet but ne.ver learned to weave. Handwoven dish towels sound like the lap of luxury. I really like the red wrap. I'm going to look at the site. I'm thinking I might be able to actually knit something very similar. I like your piece for AJJ and the beautiful sunset you shared.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to tell you, I think Halle created one of those tiny looms. I have created something for weaving small art pieces together. I'm having trouble getting in the mood to weave, though. BTW, the loom was on my craft desk in today's earlier post.
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth-very cool I will go back and check-thanks for letting me know
DeleteI'm loving and in awe of your weaving, the pattern is so amazing! Your art is beautiful too, those birds are such fun. Of course the lemon meringue pie caught my eye too, so very yummy and I'd love a piece with my cuppa today 😁. Happy T Day wishes! Hugs, Jo x
ReplyDeletethank you so much Jo the lemon meringue pie turned out so good I may need to make another one soon Happy T
DeleteReally wonderful weaving. That shawl is amazing and the color is to live for. Yumm on the lemon meringue pie. I too have slowed down on FB and other social media. Have a great day today.
ReplyDeleteGood morning and thank you, its been good to get back to weaving. I was spending just way too much time on social media-I pop in to vist FB groups mostly and I just found a weaving group that is very friendly and helpful
DeleteI'm the opposite with FB lol I'm letting all my groups go but keeping my individual interactions. That shawl is stunning. I love the color and the size. I had a 4" potholder loom when I was a child and have a 6" one now. It looks similar. I think that Zoom Loom would be fun to try. Some of the clothing items look really wearable. We enjoy trying to translate the language of birds. It's fascinating! Lemon meringue pie is one of my favorites, but I find meringue intimidating so have never tried to make it. Yours is so pretty! You have such beautiful views there on the lake! Happy T Tuesday
ReplyDeleteI have let allot of groups go too, and keeping just the ones I really enjoy interacting with-I just found a really weaving group there.
Deletethank you I loved this shawl too once it was completed-finally lol had been sitting on my loom way too many years. thanks for dropping by
Happy T-day, Kathy. Everything looks great. Super weaving you are doing, super tips on getting started without a big commitment, gorgeous sunset, and really fun journal page with the birds. I need to check out your cast iron recipes - I have been using mine more lately and really enjoy it. Hugz
ReplyDeletethank you so much This pattern is from an older Handwoven magazine it says it was a Viking era pattern from the 900's so knowing that it is fun to weave something that was woven in the past at one time.
DeleteI love my cast iron pieces too and use them every day.
oops I read the comment from Amanda below and answered about the weaving pattern-sorry about that. I have had a few in comments a little interested in weaving-this is a great way to play with weaving and most interested know how to crochet to put the squares together.
DeleteThe weaving photos are really great. I do like the new pattern. Is that the nordic pattern? Those combination of colours are very effective too. The shawl is a fabulous gift. I am practically drooling looking at this Lemon meringue pie and I bet it was a delicious breakfast. Splendid photograph! What a wonderful mix of colours on the horizon. keep well Amanda x
ReplyDeleteoops I answered about the pattern in above comment haha. this came from an older Handwoven magazine it says it is a Viking pattern from the 900's. I am liking this color combination too, I have a darker blue I will using too. thanks we do love this from scratch lemon meringue pie I don't make often enough. My husband captured a wonderful sunrise.
DeleteYour weaving is beautiful. Happy t day.
ReplyDeletethank you so much
DeleteSo glad to finally be catching up with you and with what's going on there at the lake. Larry's picture is so good. Wow! I love the red top and look forward to seeing what you create from your own woven pieces. Your towels are going to be beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSo good to see you Mary Yes Larry's photo was really cool. I am almost finished with my first towel-I have been looking at sewing patterns for a big comfy top to weave
DeleteThe shawl looks really pretty. What a thoughtful gift for your friend. The pin loom reminds me of the looms we used to weave potholders at camp. Your lemon meringue pie looks so pretty and an awesome breakfast, too. After all, it's fruit and fruit is good for you. Beautiful sunset photo. Happy T Day
ReplyDeleteGood morning, thank you CJ These little looms look like could be fun to play with, I remember those potholder looms and I still that the one I had as a kid. Happy T
DeleteYour post is a long catch-up type post, so I have made myself a coffee and have enjoyed reading what you have been doing.
ReplyDeleteThe shawl is beautiful! It is so thoughtful of you to make it extra large and long. You friend with the stroke will be sitting around a lot and possibly feel the cold more than others, so it is ideal for her.
I got all excited by the idea of a pin loom and immediately looked to see if it was available in our country. Yes it is, but the cost is too much for me. It cost 122 US dollars plus shipping. That's a lot of money (for me). But I absolutely love the red shawl.
Your tea towels are exquisite. A real luxury to have such beautiful tea towels gracing your kitchen. The Nordic pattern is stunning. You are so talented!
I think we all agree that Larry's photo should win a prize. What a beauty! You are really privileged to live in such a beautiful place.
A belated happy T-Day,
Hugs,
Lisca
Wow 122.00 is way out of line for the price. I sent you an email about mine.
DeleteI am really enjoying my journey back to weaving so glad you dropped by-hugs
Excuse me drooling and dribbling, but that lemon meringue pie looks sooo delicious!
ReplyDeleteit was very delicious-one of our favorite pies and the only dessert I use sugar in now except for the angel food cakes.
DeleteHappy Weaving! The mixed media page is lovely and cheerful. The last of the pie. sigh
ReplyDeleteYour weaving looks beautiful Kathy, and I love your bird page! The pie looks delicious too.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Alison xx
thanks so much Alison
