Good Evening Monday,
I think Indian Summer is when autumn is warm-and we are very warm here in the Ozarks area of Missouri. I don't want to pay for air conditioning any more so I have the thermostat set pretty high-around 83 F, but it did come on today still.
Early this morning, I finished making up Halloween cards for my slow mail friends. Some years I send out Thanksgiving cards but this year I thought I would do Halloween instead. I will mail them in a couple of weeks. That got me thinking to bring up from the basement my two ceramic Halloween "sacks" and a small cast iron piece. I have had these for years and years. I added the little battery tea lights that I use in my luminaries for Christmas.
That got me to thinking-wonder if they make Halloween Luminary paper sacks-like the ones I have for Christmas-and they do! So I ordered some of those and I also needed more of those little flat batteries for the tea lights too-I go through a lot of them at Christmas time. We have the perfect wooden ledge a long the bottom of those big windows that overlook the lake.
The living room here has a woodstove but sadly the last owner had a major chimney fire so not safe to use til a new liner is put in. I placed these pieces in that area. This area is decorated with some vintage pieces, homemade pottery, rocks collected here in Missouri, and cast iron pieces-like my steamers that we always had on top of the woodstove to add humidity. I miss not cooking up some chili or stew on top of the woodstove. The steamer on the right has a bear on top of it. A gift from my Mom years and years ago. If you click on it and enlarge the photo you can see the bear. One of my favorite cast iron pieces.
and I still had these rusty little pumpkins that I placed next to the pumpkin outdoors
Do you have tick or treaters that knock on your door for Halloween.? All the years we have been married-we have always lived rural so never had them stop by- One year I asked our friends that had kids when we still lived in Illinois, to stop by-I made them really large Halloween cookies from molds I had and also shared a bunch of candy. I think that was the only time we ever had trick or treaters.
As a kid I never enjoyed trick or treating-weird I know-I was the oldest so I was in "charge" of my younger siblings-that lovedddd all the candy and running around fast to the next house. Ha Ha
Not sure if it is even safe these days for tick or treating house to house I think most cities and towns have parties for the kids instead. My birthday is towards the end of October so I usually got a Halloween themed birthday growing up.
As I type this post on my blog my mind is thinking back to my younger days-smiles
Enjoy October!
It's been warm here too. It doesn't feel like October but with all the leaves changing it looks like October. We never get Trick or Treaters either; the only times we did when was my daughter was young and her friend's parents brought them by the house. I like those jack-lantern Lumiere's. They are fun. I hope you have a great week. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteI agree doesn't feel like October here either-nice for all the boaters though. Thanks I have always loved these pottery luminaries too Hugs
DeleteWe still get a few trick or treaters -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteAlways thought that would be fun
DeleteLoving your little displays! I always thought Indian Summer began after the first frost. If that's the case we are just still in Summer mode here. No frost yet. Janice
ReplyDeleteGood morning-you are right I just looked that up-said usually happens late October or November after a killing frost. we are dry again with summer temperatures too
DeleteWe live in a controlled-access building, so no trick or treaters for us.
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in the city the first 7 years we had trick or treaters droves of them but after we moved rural no. We have new children in the neighborhood so I will get some big candy bars for them.
ReplyDeleteYour decorations are wonderful all set up.
That is the first time I have heard you write about siblings do they not live near you?
Cathy
We used to get more kids than we do, but our part of the neighborhood has aged and doesn't have littles anymore. And it's weather-dependent too. Six blocks away they go through tons of candy. I think it is perfectly safe to do it here. Usually kids are in a group or accompanied and it's only 6-8 p.m. and not even dark till a little after 7. I love your luminaria bags!
ReplyDeleteI think most go out early trick or treating-I remember it was always dark out when I was a kid
DeleteI always went trick or treating as a kid and my daughter did too... We would take her candy to the airport to be xrayed looking for razor blades or needles... we were in the militarty so went around the military housing.. in those days felt safer.. eventually... hubby left military when she was 5 we would throw away her candy she got trick or treating and fill her bag with new candy but still gave her the experience.. that was important to me.. Living in this housing development is the first time i've ever had trick or treaters... i take that back i had some at the house in CA the only times i've lived in a housing area.. like you we've always lived too rural.. My GrandLittles like to help me hand out candy...so fun to watch them interact with people... I usually turn my light out A. when i run out of candy... or B. about 7:30-8pm... then the big kids come out and they can be unruly..and unkind.. Love your decorations... I'm still putting some of mine out too... After having that Halloween Birthday Tea Party for me not too long ago i'm not as enthusiastic pulling the decorations back out....lol Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteWhen I was growing up-50's early '60s we were never concerned about bad stuff in our candy stash. My father loved trick or treating where we lived we got very few but just a block over they got lots of kids. My father loved candy and he was brought up poor-one year he says I know where you can get lots of candy-so it took us back to his growing up area-we came home with a huge stash haha
DeleteI forgot about your Halloween birthday party-could always do mostly fall decoations-hugs
ooops-he took us back to-- my father ate most of our candy too haha
DeleteI had a great time trick or treating as a kid too... never worried about bad stuff .. maybe toward the end of my trick or treating days we would make sure the candy was sealed... no eating homemade stuff... that kind of thing.. What a fun memory of your Dad! :) People from in town drive out to our housing development to trick or treat... Some houses even hand out alcohol to the adults... Personally i think thats crazy... Well all the Halloween stuff is pulled out... just needs to go in its place... Some of my orange lights are out ... need to fix that.. Now candy .. thats has gotten pretty expensive... so we'll see what i end up with...lol Hugs! deb
DeleteI think we did that too made sure everything was sealed well remember getting full size candy bars back then too-we tried to hide the candy from my Dad but he always found it and would eat most all of it-couldn't help himself from not eating it haha I don't like the idea of handing out alcohol either-do they pass out those little mini sampler bottles? what about tootsie roll products sometimes those would come in large bas.
Deletehave fun hugs
No its like jello shots, shots of alcohol that you drink right then! Yeah candy prices have more than doubled.. I'm gonna check out Dollar Tree i think and go in the regular candy aisle at Walmart and see what they have...might be cheaper than the stuff packaged for Halloween... Got your letter in the mail!!! Woo Hoo!! Thanks so much Kathy! Always love your snail mail! Makes my day! Thank you for going above and beyond and voting for me.. :) Today is another Double vote day.... I'm sure thats the trick.... everyone will lose interest in voting before its over....lol uughh... Hugs! deb
Deleteoh ok have heard of jello shots. that's a ggod idea check out a Dollar store or just regular candy packaging of course it will be super cheap the day after haha good luck in the contest
DeleteHalloween is such a fun time!
ReplyDeleteYet not really popular here (yet). Last year one kiddo trick or treated here, so Ingo was "forced" to eat all the sweets himself...
I know what you mean, I always had to take care of my brother...
To good memories, dear Kathy, hugs to you and the lake!
I was wondering if Europe celebrated or this was mostly an American holiday Yes to good memories-hugs
DeleteGrowing up my brother and I did go trick or treating, but I do ‘t recall if many kids came to our home. My mother would buy the larger candy bars like Babe Ruth and Butterfingers, which my father also liked so he enjoyed leftovers. In those days, there was no concern about suspicious candy those fears came later. My husband and I would give out candy when we lived in NJ, but when we lived in the small VA town there were fewer trick or treaters. Those that came would be driven in from more rural areas. Here, in the mill apt, residents can get hang tags and resident children go only to those doors. Thanks for sharing your Halloween memories and decos, Kathy.
ReplyDeleteGood morning I agree we didn't really worry about problems with the candy back then-but we did check for anything that had been opened. I was wondering if your apartment building would give out candy or if the apartment were mostly seniors--that would be a safe place- enoy the rest of your week
